That was always little more than unix propaganda. Until GNU came around and held itself to a higher standard, it was common for unix tools to do bullshit like read input into fixed length line buffers and silently truncate anything longer (when they weren't overtly crashing). "Do it well", hardly. A more true to life account of "unix philosophy" is "worse is better". It doesn't have to be good, merely available.

GNU programs do lots of things poorly, starting with "echo -e" and "cat -n" and continuing through to tools like awk and sed. Powershell does Unix philosophy better than GNU does.

It’s still a relatively decent and ambitious thing to aspire to, i.e. a lean interface/tool scope that prevents scope creep. Composability (with pipelines) also works quite well. But yes, it is somewhat propaganda.

A lean interface needs to have incredibly well-specified behaviour to not be a pain in the ass to work with.

GNU reimplementations showed up late enough not to care about running in a 64K address space.

You might want to remind yourself what caused the November 2025 Cloudflare outage!

But it is okay if not-rich people do it. I have "pirated" and otherwise flaunted copyright my whole life, along with many millions more. Nobody has ever come at me for it. Enforcement of any sort against common people is exceedingly rare. For a long time it was only corporations who took copyright seriously, and now that even they are flaunting copyright people such as yourself suddenly pretend that the little guy has to care.

Well I don't! Copyright is a farce and I continue to wipe my butt with it.

This thread of comments seems to be getting somewhat off topic. I believe the point being made by open3dlabs is that copyright is basically a pay to play system for corporations which is obviously unjust. You're right that copyright isn't enforced on individuals, but DMCA is definitely enforced on small content sharing sites which have little to no recourse compared to large corporations that can flagrantly break the law.

Exactly. It's like the Clean Air act. Nobody's coming looking for your wood stove but they'll happily pull a million bucks out of some podunk business who's maintenance guys were foolish enough to use up an old case of paint that predates whatever the modern VOC regulations are.

Just because individuals aren't an enforcement target doesn't mean enforcement isn't happening.

> But it is okay if not-rich people do it

Are you sure you replied to the right post? You're agreeing with me here.

The post I replied to is the one suggesting that us little people doing this is at least as bad as rich people and rich corps doing it.

America isn't in a legally declared war with Iran either. Hasn't been in one since WW2. No treason convictions since then have occurred.

You're out to lunch. The Dutch government has an obligation to spy on the US. To not do so would be an abdication of their responsibilities as a government.

Ofcom started it. They sent nasty legal letters to 4chan first.

Let's not bicker and argue about who killed who, this is supposed to be a happy occasion!

You call it savage, but the result is more civilized. Why should we settle for a middle ground? Why should we negotiate with degenerates who can't even be trusted with a toilet?

There is nothing savage about the way Japan treats those who are incompatible with civilization. On the contrary, to parley with the savages is what makes you a savage too.

Huh? What do you think I said here? The point you attack doesn't appear to resemble anything I (1) meant to say and (2) actually said.

The comment you're replying to appears to be responding to the comment made by shoobiedoo in response to what you originally said. It makes sense in this context, whether or not you agree with the position.

You can't pay janitors enough to deal with degenerates who routinely deliberately destroy public bathrooms in western countries. It's a job for police and the courts, but those are dysfunctional in a way which "more money" doesn't fix.

Result is all the clean and useful bathrooms are private, because only thus can shit-smearing vandals be reasonably excluded (and only then, somewhat.)

So you can't pay a janitor enough to deal with vandals, but somehow the minimum wage bartender that already has to tend to a bar and cash register is able to keep their toilets clean no problem?

It's not that hard to make toilets that are nearly indestructible and can be very efficiently cleaned by a guy in a "hazmat" suit with a pressure washer. It probably wouldn't be that hard to largely automate this. But the market for this is small and mostly governments, so prices are high and innovation is low.

Paris has a few automated self-cleaning toilets.

Do you realize how much money police arrests, courts, and jail cost? A janitor and occassional repairs are way cheaper any way I can look at it. There arent gangs of people walking around with grinders or hacksaws fucking up as much stuff as possible despite what you may want to believe.

Cloudflare = Crypto AG. Prince is a cutout.

My evidence is that I made it the fuck up, but if it turns out to be true everybody will groan and say they should have guessed. I don't want to be like that, so I'm saying it now.

Vocal fry being the tramp stamp of voice is such a perfect way of putting it!

When you're working with a bullshitter and can't just leave, what use is there in performative caring? Your coworkers may have still cared, privately, but actively complaining about it, presuming boss man doesn't care anyway, is just pissing into the wind. You may as well accept that he's a bullshitter and get over it. Some people are like that and it doesn't help you to spend your time seething over it.

If you can get him fired then go for it. Otherwise, you're only harming yourself by letting yourself dwell on it. As for believing him; when my coworker starts rambling about the time the Navy seals came to him for help, I just say "wow man, crazy". I don't believe him, but neither do I confront it. Why bother? I'm not being paid to call out his dumb lies. This is probably what your other coworkers were thinking.

Caring and "seething" over it helps helps you to not become like them, not to adopt their projected views, not to blame their victims or otherwise contributing to the harm.

Conversely, actively complaining about it prevents enabling group thing to form. It helps victims identify the situation sooner, to leave of better protect themselves.

I’m not worried about becoming like them, and I have never once seen complaining about them or calling them out work positively for the person doing it. But, I’ve found acting confused and asking them for more detailed information has helped.

My comment was not about person doing it, but what doing it does to victims.

Maybe so, but its a mistake to assume others are falling for it just because they don't outwardly react to it. Ignoring it is the low-effort route that gets you through the day, so most people will usually do that.

Personally when I ignore things that I feel are wrong it just gnaws on me constantly. I agree that it’s the low-effort route but if I had an extreme bullshitter I had to work with on a daily basis would need to do something about it or switch jobs. Doesn’t mean I constantly need to call out ever single bit of untruth; like so many things it’s a spectrum

Yes most people either show nothing and later end up believing at least portion of lies ... or believe lies.

But, you acted as if there was something wrong with those who dont. And as if there was some higher value in enabling and playing along. I disagree with both.

True. The practical reality is that it causes colleagues to divert limited resources to address this web of lies. No one wants to do that unless you're a fiend for emotional drama (practically speaking, some are desperate to gather any and all ammo to use against each other). For everyone else, it's emotional labor. And no one is getting paid to do emotional labor (unless that's the unspoken agreement that isn't written in their job descriptions).

If you really wanna out a liar and come out clean on the other end, it's just so much documentation, emotional decision trees, how to phrase & frame & present things, etc. etc. etc.

Often, the compulsive liar will out themselves, create their own demise, or be enabled and further empowered by a toxic system that rewards such types (which if possible, you'd wanna get out of ASAP because prolonged exposure leaves lasting damage to anyone in such systems).
