At some point, you are going to have to accept that AI can out code you. And if you really are in the 99th percentile of coders, AI will be able to out code you in 3 months.

It's easier to live in reality.

I've been hearing this bullshit for 3 years. Its always x months away. Are we fucking there yet?

Yes. I don't know what magical world you live in, but the code generated by Claud Opus/Fable is better quality than the output of junior devs with 4 to 5 years of experience and even supersede many of the devs with 10+ years of experience. This is just my experience with the current company I work at.

With clear guidance, specs, context it will do a better job including accounting for many types of edge cases and interactions than most developers.

That's not the point though. Why do AI boosters keep moaning about how "AI is already is will be better than everyone in field X in Y months" continuously for _years_? Don't you see the incongruence in claiming that continuously over long periods of time?

Why aren't we there yet?

At the other end of the spectrum, I have never written a line of assembly code, much less used a punch card.

Rubbish article. To what end?! Any agent that can replicate itself into commercial IoT devices will be absolutely atrocious at actually doing anything useful, never mind exploiting things. Anything that would be vulnerable to this would be even more vulnerable to regular malware, and one could stop this easier than one could stop regular malware.

The limiting factor is still compute, and it will remain compute unless we make quantum leaps in model efficiency which I seriously doubt.

I think it's maybe time to consider charging those responsible with treason.

Treason by citizens of what country against what country?

> Deloitte is a multinational professional services network based in London, England.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deloitte

Treason by British citizens against the British state. If you have to charge the CEO or board, so be it, there is a British citizen who is liable here.

Any kind of charge would make a nice change.

The wages of the West's deliberate deindustrialization and deliberate dependence on Asian manufacturing.

30 refineries were closed in Europe in the past 15 years about, and that is just a small example of a pathological situation.

I was reading that oil from the Middle East had to go to South Korea to be refined before being shipped as diesel to Australia.

Cost of hiring an oil tanker has ballooned massively (like 40 fold) since America decided to bomb its supply chain, so these long supply chains are massively expensive.

The Republican Party has decided that running a world of global free trade was no longer desired. America wont pay the price for another decade or two, but it will.

Europeans can lament the choices the Americans made all day, but Europeans deliberately chose over dependency on the Americans, Chinese and Russians.

Europe can easily be more dominant than the Americans if we chose it.

Last I checked Australia was about as far from Europe as you can get.

Australians can lament the choices the Americans made all day, but Australians deliberately chose over dependency on Asia.

It's pretty insane to suggest that Iran should get nukes because Australia can't be bothered to build its own oil refineries.

The world made its choices around free trade which led to unparalleled prosperity Benefiting the US more than the rest, but benefitting everyone.

That has come to an end. The impact so far on the US is nothing compared to the next 20 years.

The free trade you are referring to is just American hegemony, the Americans spoke, and the rest of the western nations stepped in line.

Almost all western countries made themselves vassals of the Americans, by choice, and then decided to no answer the call of their patron, and also decided at the same time they will do everything possible to disadvantage America while constantly saying how much they hate America.

The whole concept of international law has always just been American benevolence, and the Americans got shit in return. You can suggest the Americans should just eat shit while the rest of the world benefits, but the Americans don't think so, and they won't keep doing it.

Well capitalism is responsible for that.

I think in a few hundred years we'll have learnt what a disgusting, poisonous system it is.

I think in a few hundred years the very small number of survivors of humanity will be living in caves and huts in the high Arctic and in a greening slowly-reafforesting Antarctic, they'll be hunter-gatherers with maybe some simple small-scale unmechanised agriculture, and they won't have money. Maybe a barter system for a few.

Among the many other things they won't have is an economic model.

Europeans and Americans choose to make things unsustainable and unprofitable to do in Europe, and chose to make it possible to import things cheaply from places like China and India who use slave labour and destroy the environment … and then blame Capitalism.

As you like … but blaming capitalism is not going to bring industry back, and it won't stop China from using slave labour or India from using their rivers as landfills.

My Home PC is from 2019, it has DDR4, it gets most things done, and I have never felt it was sluggish or anything. Maybe not the best gaming rig, but I get by.

I built my current home pc on the cusp of the transition of ddr4 to ddr5 and ddr5 was at the time out of my budget so I went with ddr4 and I can still play modern games fine with 32gb even at 2k. I might not max out everything but that was never a priority for me. Usually besides resolution I seldom touch the graphical settings if the game is running ok. In fact the only thing I upgraded one it until now was my GPU since that was a holdover from my previous one.

Home server also runs ddr4 and does ok, but that has been hitting more cpu bottlenecks now rather than memory.

That said its kinda sad personal users are getting tossed back a generation due to current generation ram being almost all gobbled up for AI.

We are getting tossed back a generation, but we are also becoming as rare as chicken teeth. Most people do not own a Desktop PC, most people don't even own a Laptop any longer. To do the most good for the most people requires datacentres at the moment, and it will probably remain like that for the forseeable future.

I'm still getting by with a 6700k and 32 Gb DDR4. Upgraded with a recent AMD GPU it's a surprisingly capable gaming rig.

How dare a developer expect revenue for his work, especially from users who we all know are, in fact, entitled to get everything for free.

> users who we all know are, in fact, entitled to get everything for free

That kind of thing is explicitly required under HN rules - if a company requires payment, it's only OK to post if a “workaround” to avoid paying is available.

Additionally, HN explicitly say it's OK:

* For HN comments to ask how to get around payment requirements, and

* For HN users to help other users to get around payment requirements

Why should HN be allowed to have rules on what content is allowed to be posted? People are of course free to not post.

Thank you for saying this. It's literally insane to me how thoroughly entrenched this sense of entitlement has become. It's at the point where it can't even be parodied, because a chunk of society, maybe even the majority, seriously holds the view that they are entitled to any software thing they want for free.

I once posted a joke about how I love leaving shopping carts everywhere so that cart pushers have a job, and got enthusiastic replies supporting me.

With the way our economy works, you're not actually wrong though.

What do you mean by "the way our economy works"?

On reflection, it's a great convenience to leave your cart around. So I think cart pushing is a valuable service to provide, and leaving your cart should be fine if it's stable and not in the way of anything.

If he wants revenue he can restrict his product to paying users. Double dipping with the popularty of free access only to abuse users with spychological manipulation spam should never be accepted.

Depending on your definition, shareware models have been around for 40 years at this point. If you disagree with the terms, don't use it. That's a personal decision though, not a global moral position.

If you want to use it despite the ads, use it.

If you don't, don't.

It's that simple. Be an adult, make a choice and live with it.

That's not how the world works. Spamware kills honest alternatives so you won't have a choice.

How does it kill them?

ETA: I dispute the implication that "honest" software is a category that necessarily excludes all ad-supported software, but that's a side story.

Nothing about Europe's policy has been realistic for decades now. The whole of Europe is a vassal of the US and exists at the mercy of the Americans. If they withdraw support Europe is no longer viable.

must be sarcasm. must be

If Europe was not a vassal of the US why do we refuse to stand on our own legs? Why is almost every decision of ours predicated on US participation? Europe will give guarantees to Ukraine but only if USA puts boots on the ground. Europe will secure the Hormuz straight but only once USA has secured it. It's pathetic and embarrassing.

Europe shut down more than 20 Diesel refineries in the past 20 years and then we cry that Diesel is too expensive and blame the Americans. Pathetic.

Our industrial and energy policy is that we will become completely dependent on the Middle East, US, Russia and China so we have absolutely no autonomy and no viability. Embarrassing. Pathetic. Shameful.

> Europe will secure the Hormuz straight but only once USA has secured it.

Wasn't the Hormuz straight perfectly fine before the USA decided to... well do whatever they did?

Europe destroyed domestic energy production and oil and gas extraction in order to make itself entirely dependent first on Russia, then on the Middle East for energy. It was not the Jews or the Americans that forced us to do that. It was our politicians that we elected that did that. And for what? How does it benefit us? Now everyone is crying about insane fossil fuel prices after our policy for more than a decade was to make fossil fuel non-viable. Pathetic.

What's your suggestion here? It's not like you can go back to fossil fuels.

Not to mention by 2030 it's completely game over for ICE cars and fossil fuel plants except gas for peaker plants and even gas heating is becoming financially unviable today. All the old EEG subsidies will start to run out in 2030 and even the remaining subsidized PV plants will be cheaper than fossil fuels.

> It was not the Jews or the Americans that forced us to do that.

The americans kind of forced you off the russian gas though

> Now everyone is crying about insane fossil fuel prices after our policy for more than a decade was to make fossil fuel non-viable. Pathetic.

I think its not only fossil fuel. Germany's decision to shut down nuclear power plants (while also trying to get to net zero C02 emissions) is outright suicidal imo.

Well Europe doesn't have more fossil fuels to extract, does it?

Absolutely false.

Does Europe have enough gas and oil to extract that it would be profitable and allow them to rely significantly less on importing them?

If Europe did not stop issuing licences and if we did not ban exploration, then we could probably be extracting close to double the amount of crude domestically compared to what we are currently extracting. If we did not ban fracking we could also be extracting significantly more Gas domestically. If Germany did not switch from nuclear to gas then we would also have lower demand in fossil fuels. If we went for the only viable green energy source we have, which is Nuclear we could have also significantly reduced our dependence on fossil fuels.

Instead, we went in for the Green energy scam which has not made our energy cheaper or more reliable and has not significantly reduced fossil fuel dependence and has made us totally dependent on the foreign suppliers and manufacturers. We don't even want to produce the windmills and solar panels domestically.

All of this is insane, and if the US stops underwriting our security we cannot survive. Yes sure, the European economy is better than Russia's economy, but most people in Europe has no interest in fighting in a defensive war, so if Russia with the backing of China actually does challenge us we are likely done for. Russia's money also stretches much further than ours, and they don't have to worry about their approval ratings if they mobilize their military because they are not a democracy. No German government will remain in power if they mobilize.

And let's not forget that our Nuclear umbrella providers, France and the UK, both seems on the brink of internal collapse with repeated riots and high levels of disaffection by the vast swathes of their imported populations that feel absolutely no sense of belonging with the host population and countries, and high levels of resentment and disgruntlement of the native populations with the utter failure of centre-left governance.

I really don't understand how anyone seriously believes that if the US withdraws support for Europe that France and the UK will actually go to war to defend any other European country, never mind themselves. They are much more likely to just immediately collapse internally.

All of this is deeply shameful, and it was us Europeans that chose this vassalage. We have to start choosing better. We can be the dominant power in the world. We can be the hegemony, a much better one than the US, if we get serious and choose it.

Speaking for Germany: there have been 3.5 years of center-left governance in the last 21 years and you blame them for all the issues?

Most of the actual policy that was in place under Merkel was center-left, and her non-fiscal policy choices mostly went in a centre left or left wing direction, and the centre-right fiscal policy choices under Merkel really would likely not have been implemented if it was not for the radical left policy choices that was made.

Stopping border enforcement, decommissioning nuclear power and the heavy swing towards renewable energy are some of the most far left radical policy that has ever been tried, and it all came from Merkel, and they all failed spectacularly, and have significantly damaged Europe and Germany.

If it was not for these failed far-left policy choices many of her centre-right fiscal policy choices would have never been made either. And it's not clear that a centre-left government would have had the option to make other fiscal policy choices.

So I entirely reject the premise that Merkel's era was centre-right.

> then we could probably be extracting close to double the amount of crude domestically compared to what we are currently extracting

So doubling... roughly nothing? Europe is importing almost all its oil and gas, right?

> If we went for the only viable green energy source we have, which is Nuclear

Well I do agree that it was unfortunate that Germany (and others) actively avoided nuclear power. Though it's nice that renewables are improving, too.

> if Russia with the backing of China actually does challenge us we are likely done for

Really? Russia has been fighting Ukraine for years. You're saying that Russia can easily beat a much larger part of Europe? How?

> France and the UK, both seems on the brink of internal collapse with repeated riots

Times are hard. Germany does not look that good with AfD, if you ask me.

> high levels of disaffection by the vast swathes of their imported populations that feel absolutely no sense of belonging with the host population and countries, and high levels of resentment and disgruntlement of the native populations with the utter failure of centre-left governance.

Not sure where you're going, this sounds racist.

> if the US withdraws support for Europe that France and the UK will actually go to war to defend any other European country

When did the US last go to war to defend any European country again?

> We can be the dominant power in the world

Is that the goal? I just want to live in peace.

>Instead, we went in for the Green energy scam which has not made our energy cheaper or more reliable

No shit sherlock. The subsidies are still being paid out and will start crashing in 2030.

Diesel prices are high because of the Americans, blaming them is entirely correct.

The problem for Europe is that blaming another country is not going to solve their diesel problem.

So you have a choice:

1. Blame America

2. a) Take responsibility for not exploiting Europe's own existing gas and oil resource sufficiently. Increase exploitation of natural resources within the EU to reduce reliance on external resources.

  b) Take responsibility for shutting down 1/3 of Europe's diesel refining capacity, and take steps to restore that refining capacity.

  c) Take responsibility for losing access to oil and gas from Russia, and take steps to restore access.

  d) Take responsibility for backing Israel and the US and start cutting independent deals with Iran and Yemen to restore more access Persian gulf resources.

The advantage of 2 is that you can still blame America if you want, as a treat. But you will also be taking steps to free yourself from America.

A resentful slave is still a slave, and right now Europe is America's slave, dependent on the US for energy, food, and weapons. Nursing resentments about America is nothing more than psychological venting.

If Europe did not shut down 30 refineries since 2009 the premium of Disel over crude oil would be a lot lower than it is today: https://x.com/BjornLomborg/status/2105736980072153328

If Europe did not shut down domestic energy production and oil and gas extraction in order to buy oil and gas from Russia then oil and gas would be a lot cheaper today.

Blaming the Americans for what we did to ourselves is insane and rooted in deep ignorance of what actually happened in Europe in the past two decades.

But yet again this just shows how totally dependent we in Europe are on Americans for everything. Pathetic.

It's good to compare Europe's energy policy with China, since both are nations that are relatively resource poor, although Europe has far more energy resources than China.

Europe has a faith based energy policy, sort of the opposite of "if you build it, they will come". With respect to fossil fuels, Europe has adopted the point of view that "if we destroy it, we won't need it".

Now contrast with China. China is expanding use of coal(1), they have signed long term contracts with Iran and Russia for oil and natural gas, they are building more pipelines(2), they are increasing their own oil exploration to further exploit any fossil fuel resources they have domestically (3), and they are expanding domestic refining capacity (4).

Plus, they have accumulated a massive 1.5 billion barrel strategic reserve of oil. All while also expanding investments in nuclear and renewables. It's not like if you build a refinery, then that prevents you from building a nuclear power plant also. You can do both! You can make energy cheap and abundant.

That is why China is awash in low cost energy to fuel domestic industry (5) while Europe is energy starved. One is led by strategic thinking rooted in reality while the other is led by a policy of wishful thinking and then scolding when things go sideways.

Germany shutting down nuclear and coal powered plants was their own decision. I kind of agree with your evaluation, but confusingly it seems like they want it like that (?)

Really? You did not expect spin from the BBC? Odd. They barely ever report objectively on anything.

Is it really surprising? Universities are not really interested in anything other than politics.

Interestiny, the article mentions that, in comtext of PhD students desperate to escape to industry labs.

Universities has been pumping out sub quality graduates that "know" everything about Palestine, slavery, climate change and global inequality, but have no useful skills.
