What is the consent line being drawn here? From handwriting recognition and mail filtering from back in 2002, face detection in iPhoto back in 2009, text to speech and Siri, dictation, NLP, text to speech, the vision framework, and Core ML are all examples of AI/ML tech that have shipped at some point standard on new Macs long before Golden Gate.
If you are still going on about the consciousness debate, I can put you in a jail cell and strap you down to a chair too. Can I claim you no longer have consciousness now and are an inert machine? If this procedure is not enough we can put electrodes in the brain and further restrict you for the thought experiment.
Intentionally eliminating a choice that they used to provide that many people would still like the ability to choose is not a new phenomenon, you're correct. That doesn't make it any less user hostile when it happens though, and I think plenty of people don't think "well plenty of other sucky things happen in similar ways" to be a good reason not to be upset when a new unnecessary sucky thing happens.
My instinct is that the use of the word "consent" is getting used a bit more aggressively lately with regards to AI features because of how pervasive they've become despite very often not having much user desire for them. It's certainly possible for someone object to something in a way that's worse than the thing they're unhappy about, but this doesn't seem anywhere close to that level IMO.
No it’s the attitude of “I don’t know why you don’t want it” and “just deal with it” and “learn to love it” and all the other things they say to accept technology. There’s no reason to force a multi gig file on someone’s computer when it’s a purely optional feature.
Plus there was a way to disable it easily, now it’s gone. That _is_ a consent issue.
Everyone can now make games that no one can play because no one can afford to buy gaming machines anymore because everyone can now make games. Great future we've been handed.
That's lovely, I have screenshots of different behavior this morning. They undid it. This is hilarious. I retried right now and it's saying Biden won the 2020 election again.
Ultimately I think they’re looking at the taxpayers to bail them out of this bubble. Everyone knows they over invested, no one wants to admit it because they’ll lose money.
I’ve been having some weird issues since upgrading that I haven’t been able to pinpoint if it’s the apps or the OS.
New since upgrading:
- In telegram messages get stuck sending and the app has to be force quit
- Discord doesn’t pick up audio device changes until the app is restarted
- Soundsource has crashed a few times if I change my AirPods out.
- Selecting a screenshot area is laggy when dragging the selection box
Because then it wouldn't scare the governments into regulating models that are undercutting them. This is just an obvious tactic too and it seems like it might be backfiring a bit. Congress might be a bit dumb, but they're not that dumb.
Somebody posted that GitHub status summary: in ten years, they averaged 10 incidents per month — this includes the last 12 months. In the last six months, average is 22.
Not bad but the section numbering gives it away now. Also something cloudflare has. I don’t know if I’d call that slop though. It’s really just the stuff people don’t care about and let whatever the llm comes up with ship.
I think it’s more them doing this on purpose to scare politicians into regulating what models are allowed. The cheap/free models are catching up fast and the “frontiers” are burning cash to win market dominance. They’ll have to eventually raise prices and can’t really do that when there’s comparable alternatives for basically free.
It's already a "regulation" that one shouldn't steal, enter a private property without the right to do so, etc, yet we have a lot of these crimes.
I could see the UK trying to set a law on ehat models are allowed, only to learn again, that the UK law doesn't apply everywhere, but as long as you can rent compute in a foreign country the whole idea is dead.
