I am European, and I feel the same way.

Europe has been anti-innovation for a long time, completely missing the tech wave in the 2000s. I was hopeful that Europe would learn from its past mistakes, but now it is also completely missing the AI wave and falling behind.

The politics are bad, way too user-centric (see Arthur Mensch complaining about AI regulation), and the European mentality does not help. The social safety net is strong, which is good, but perhaps too generous given the state of the economy. Without sufficient economic growth, it becomes unsustainable, leading to a lower and lower quality of social benefits.

People complain, rightly so, that things were better before, but nobody does anything or even seems to understand that innovation and economic growth are what fuel everything.

I am very bearish on the state of Europe, which, as a European, makes me sad.

Disclaimer: I have immigrated to the US.

It's just the takeover of the continent by an ossified bureaucratic class. Their opinions and actions do not represent the European people's but quite the opposite of it.

OP’s link is the statement on the events of the last few days. Tristan Buckmaster also released mathematical papers alongside this statement:

This is a position paper. Its purpose is to advocate for a specific viewpoint to the ML community.

Sure, and the parent comment's position is that they dislike it. Its purpose is to advocate against clickbait titles becoming normalized in the scientific community.

This is the opposite of clickbait. The topic is obvious from the title.

Clickbait doesn't have to be false, it has to be shocking. Being false is one way of being shocking. "Stop doing X!" -- really now?
