Corruption depends on the rule of law. And you can not have rule of law, when the primary state-forming institution is the clan-family. Its just not possible. So any culture, that can not produce state-builders, is doomed to fail forever, with the history dotted with failures. Its hard to understand- but these states you see on the map, named and infamed- are not real. The clan who rules and the cityparts and cities they own and live in, that is the state. The rest- is conquered territories, ruled by other clan-families, who are subjugated and extracted from.

Which is why these countries are so much more prosperous when outsiders rule them, supressing the clan systems for anything more meritocratic.

> Which is why these countries are so much more prosperous when outsiders rule them, supressing the clan systems for anything more meritocratic.

That's generally not how colonization worked. Quite often, colonization intentionally created the large scale tribal identities. Allegiance to clans grows because of deep suspicion of extractive governments put in place by outsiders.

The colonial system was meritocratic. It has a lot of bad things, but an absolutely staggering amount of Englishmen and Scotsmen and Welshman got their start and career through their hard work in India. A lot of whom, especially those minorities, would never have had a chance in G.B.

Yeah, one of those Scotsmen is my ancestor, along with the enslaved woman he raped. And then he enslaved his own child.

Look into:

- the Mau Mau in Kenya (https://radiolab.org/podcast/mau-mau)

- prerevolutionary Haitian society from the Black Jacobins by CLR James (https://politicaleducation.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/CL...)

- what King Leopold of Belgium did to the Congo

- what happened to Rapa Nui (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCyzrie_les)

- Heart of Darkness on British imperialism in the Congo

The cost of the socio-economic mobility provided to lower classes in colonizing societies was absolutely staggering. Unimaginable cruelty, suffering and destruction was visited upon the native populations.

Lol I don't know if this is a dog whistle so much as a dog call.

There is nothing inherently unique to African culture that means Africans need western saviors to understand why their primitive clannish ways are holding them back. The same social unit is native to all human culture.

The problem is that the rest of the world wants African natural resources and a weak, distributed African power structure is good for that.

Hard to be a true state builder over the past 80 years without being capped by the CIA or else suborned to the soviets/bratva.

Which almost makes China's mercantilist foothold on the continent seem like an improvement.

It’s hard to see from a US perspective, but for us in Africa it _is_ an improvement. China is actively growing client economies in a continent that has seen little but exploitation for the longest time. Despite all the fear mongering, they are yet to take adverse possession of a state utility or force the sale of a national asset when loans have defaulted. You know who does do things like that? The world bank and the IMF.

I’m not a big fan of China or their politics, but they have certainly been much more beneficial for Africa than the West has in recent memory.

Reminds me of the old joke about why communism never works

Why does communism never work?

Because eventually you get overthrown by the CIA

When those countries were ruled by outsiders, the people who ran them weren't picking capable locals to have power, they were picking capable outsiders to have power. (And that's in the best case.)

The locals were only used for manual labour and filling out conscript armies (overseen by coloniser officers). This creates societies where, for generations, none of the natives have any experience with doing any of the jobs necessary to actually govern a country.

You do know that Ethiopia wasn't technically colonized ever, right? It had a single 5 year period of military occupation by Mussolini and co around 1936...

No, it's problems are largely self-inflicted. But what I said is quite relevant to countries that have been.

> And you can not have rule of law, when the primary state-forming institution is the clan-family

You can. See US (Boeing, Rockefeller etc), UK (Royal "family", house of lords, etc), Germany ( Porsche and others)

Well, a broader interpretation of this idea is that paradoxically there needs to be a certain level of authoritarianism in order to have a civil functioning republic.

In the 1900s this was communism. A lot of people (either disingenuously or not) interpreted this as anti-democratic. But if you look at what actually happened where conditions were right, it turned out to work well- China and Vietnam, and if you just look at authoritarianism, not just communist authoritarianism, then Singapore, S. Korea, Taiwan as well. Some would also argue that the USA falls into this category- that the same arm of the government suppressing corruption is also going after marginalized groups.

There aren't that many examples in history where the ideal balance is actually struck.

In a way its worse- nothing is stopping claude from decompiling all the things- and then adding the source code it decompiled to the training data, as if it was just another github to crawl. So if one of your installers is out there- you have provided the perfect example of something working.

That's true, but the installers for most of the really valuable proprietary native software are still locked behind paywalls. (Some have been leaked.)

I suspect we'll increasingly see vibe coding targeting assembly language. If humans aren't going to read or write the code then using higher level languages becomes kind of pointless, except for being able to use the toolchains.

Its a trade-off- a humanity racing and potentially going offer the cliff, needs all the tools to continue existance as an civilization. None of the involved decision makers caring long-term worries about the AI-companies or the artists. Fleeting momentary things, but the capabilities are eternal, as long there is a chip, with a solar panel half way around the world, some medieval tribe with a tablet can recover western civilization from basic principles. Thats the best insurrance against regression into stone-age facism or socialism money can buy.

Is that already economic delamination? As in the singularity extracts the most valuable ressources (new thought generators) from the traditional economy keeping mankind alive and stable- towards itself?

As of now the ai needs hands, and maybe more importantly, cognitive intentionality which thus far only arises from living beings drive for homeostasis to survive and reproduce. If ai can have this same intentionality is a big unknown.

Because it stops society falling apart and regressing. Humanity is not some angelic, monolith stoic super species, which is just programmed wrong. Its half-sane monkeys which fall apart in a regression as soon as the surplus bribery stops and then try to sew the bakeries oven apart, so everyone has something to eat.

One can not create policies that destroy the thing they want to protect from a crisis to come, by inducing a different crisis by ignoring the material you work with. Trump is your doing, you brought this guy forth, by deindustrializing the west, by making western buisnesses unable to compete. Stop working with idealized paper-cut outs of people- and actually engage, with the species you got. And no, your good intentions and noble goals, do not entitle you to wing it.

Life is inheritly expansive and colonialist. The trees war the grass for the light by throwing shade. So people have these little plot-armor, little stories justifying endless expansion- having three kids, who consume thanks to modern industrialized society energy and nutrients like a medieval village and do the same. Without these "Im-good" self-repairing stories, people would stop having kids and wither and die. To demand people to be rational there, is to start a death cult.

These whales sing songs about how sharks have no souls and the metal fish dwellng on the surface mauled there ancestors.

Surely you realise that there’s a balance between “stop reproducing and die to avoid harm to the world” and “consume all resources available for short-sighted gluttony”.

There are absolutely ways to lower our impact and lots of smart people working on figuring out how this can be made to work at scaley

So far, it appears those smart people have created a ideological caused self-extinction of western civilizations and thus a take-over by unapologetic expansionist imperialist cultural systems. Not very smart and not very longterm loadbearing.. it seems those "smart" people are mostly ideological driven and unable to work with the flawed, half-animal humans given.

Honestly -- I think the deeper point here is Nietzsche's: there's nothing wrong about winning. Nothing wrong about conquest. Nothing wrong with having three kids and outcompeting your neighbor.

This cultural meme spreads because short term gluttony is not, in fact, winning: if you eat your seed-corn, next year you starve. And winning is not about quantity either, but quality: I unapologetically want to shape the light-cone in my image, and my image recoils at torment.

The show Pluribus explores this idea. I can't wait for more episodes

You could wouldnt even need that. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opferanode

Yes, but you have to replace the sacrificial anode every so often.

Like the plate of food on the grass for the bees at the barbecue

Wasps, not bees.

(Sorry, I'm a bit of a nerd. But I am sure you can cope with that.)

Does pork factor into this? (Serious question for an expert, not a joke.)

You did ask the bee for pork

Retract my bee slander!!

More for the wasps, I guess?

Wait, does this actually work?

Just wish I could claim credit. Decoy plate is essential.

And since nobody complained it sounds wasteful, I suppose it should be able to be just scraps.

May your next camping trip or picnic be wasp free!

It sure attracts the wasps. Whether you have less of them on your real food compared to the counterfactual, I don't know.

Git blame -> graph of all employees , route from ex employees to successor or departmenthead

Just make sure you retain the org tree history.

The old hypsters have to subsidize the new hypsters.

It also had ridiculous rules to enforce "quality" but in the end it was to enforce user work by convention. Like one question per question only. Nobody could just post a project with a set of questions. Nobody was allowed "stupid" questions, nobody was allowed to do in depth meta excursions, the site reeked of rigor, where a true academic would have allowed for rigor to go lax when moving away from certainty aka to the funnel stage of enlightenment. It also would not allow for grouping questions into a format thats similar to the youtube "project" format.
