If it could be concentrated on the top 5% of upper management that would be a great start. Maybe we could get a few productions without a political agenda, or at least a different one?

The idea that culture should strive to be ideologically vacant and neutral is nonsensical. So is the idea that all viewpoints are automatically equally worth depicting as positive.

"Political agenda" is just the current talking point for people who don't want to admit that ideas and change make them uncomfortable.

Investments aren’t made because the product is amazing, they’re made because there’s a compelling exit scenario. Engineers don’t want to hear this but more generally, the critical success factors for a business aren’t product or engineering they’re relationships i.e. sales and team dynamics. If technical excellence dictated business outcomes in tech Salesforce wouldn’t exist for example.

I switched to Mac 20 years ago and am still mourning the loss of my Home and End keys. Karabiner doesn’t reliably fix it neither does anything else.

> the cost of fraud

Fraud in modern financial systems is kind of.. funny? obvious? Local banks who know who Bob is can't make enough money due to scale, we'll scale that system to a national level with millions of participants. How will we do that? Bob is now customer 11,476,112. Oh no this anonymous number we created cheated us because we didn't know who he was, what do we do? Charge Bob and everyone else for the cost of this, our scaled up business model wouldn't work otherwise. We'll skim 3% off of every financial transaction infinitely, so that after our $100 virtual bill has changed hands 30 times it has disappeared into our coffers.

Those are often files not directories. In that case I zero out the file (no bytes) then change ownership to root and -w it. Ridiculous you have to jump through these hoops to manage your own machine and Apple doesn’t bother to expose this anywhere.

Agree. I don't know where the loophole is—allowing an app to run a launch agent? Allowing it to replace its binary?

Clearly though, an irresponsible or rogue app could later install a "warez version" of itself after the user had installed the harmless one. And MacOS appears not to put up any gaurdrails to prevent that.

Is that characterization even controversial? Isn’t this their self description and marketing pitch?

Omniscience outside private property is “existing law enforcement knowledge”?

It’s great when you want to check on a server or IP from an outside network. You can do that from a phone but with SDF you have your full desktop terminal if you like and a clean cache.

They allow port scans?

I did use nmap on a Linux VM going over the free ProtonVPN for this purpose, but at some point Proton broke something (it may be related to their VPN accelerator feature) and checking any port always reports "Open" (even if it's not), so sadly that made this cool use case entirely useless for me. It definitely was nice to know you had no open ports other than the ones you purposefully opened. :)

They also have their own streaming radio. Awesome list of tools. One of the few remaining shining lights of our original hacker culture, in the sense of the term from this forum’s name. Absolutely love SDF.
