In math we have a thing called a "scoop"; another mathematician publishing a result that beats yours before you published it. The scooper hardly acknowledges the scoopee unless the methods used were orthogonal. The scooper gets the good journal and the scoopee's paper is usually one tier below.
It seems like OpenAI heard of the rumor and then scooped them because their internal model is better/they have more compute. OpenAI has NO obligation to mention Tristan nor Levent, because they DID NOT steal their data.
You are glossing over the fact that there is reasonable suspicion that OpenAI used privileged information to do “the scoop”. I.e. they used the fact that researcher used OpenAI tools to get advantage .
Imagine if OpenAI opened up a high frequency trading arm and suddenly stole all the prompts and research that other HfT firms are doing through OpenAI tools and start making bank based on that . Wouldn’t that be straight up insane?
It's kind of lucky for everyone that climate is mostly a perfect sliding scale, the more CO2 you avoid putting into the atmosphere the more heat capacity you'd avoid. So every bit helps. Many negative impacts of heat, like changing intense weather, biodiversity loss, and deaths to high heat also correspondingly change linearly with heat. So every bit is a literal victory, there's no major cutoff that we know of until things get really bad (which they might). What's your point?
This sucks. I use adb to uninstall all of the system apps like facebook, youtube, web browser, etc. to give myself a minimalist, distraction-free phone that still has niche apps, maps, and communication apps. Might have to look into the expensive light phones as an alternative now if this update hits my phone.
I had the exact same problem because I had a strong addiction to smartphone apps.
I looked into the Light Phone and The Mudita Kompakt, but I ended up buying a refurbished Pixel 8 and putting Graphene OS on it, then I installed only essential apps I need. I keep my old iPhone 12 in a drawer at home and use it for anytime I Need any apps that don't work on a custom ROM, which includes my bank app (plus, imo, it's safer not carry around a phone that has my baking data on it in case it gets lost or stolen).
The light phones are a really cool concept but the Light Phone 3 is quite expensive (more expensive than a new Pixel 10) and the Mudita Kompakt seems to have a huge amount of grievances from users on their forum, so that put me off.
You have never been able to uninstall apps from the /system partition with adb (without root). You have only been able to disable them to stop them from showing up.
One challenge with this approach is: could it be possible that the detector is simply learning to recognize words and jargon used more in the literature post 2022 as 'AI'?
For example, LLMs love to talk about LLMs (and the people who write with LLMs love to write about LLMs). Could "large language model" itself therefore be flagged as an AI-like phrase by this approach? It didn't exist much in the literature before 2022, does now, and certainly does more in AI-generated text: but, it is not actually a great way to distinguish modern AI generated text from human written text.
A helpful control would be to show that on some cohort of papers that can be declared reasonably clean of LLM generated text post 2023 there are very low rates compared to the arxiv.
For example, while papers in the journals Nature and Science are unlikely to be entirely LLM free at this point, if those were tested through 2026, we should see a line significantly lower than the arxiv's growth.
You raise a valid point. Just by intuition I'd say if this were true, it would probably just be a small fraction of the actual flagged articles. I will still look into how I can mitigate this when I update the detector.
The difficulty with this is then: How do you get a clean post 2023 dataset? I have no straightforward idea for this. You can't use other AI detectors to build it because then you'd never outperform them.
