You can probably just point Claude or ChatGPT to decrypt it, it would find that there's some silly and obvious cipher is used that survived from the 60ies, with a 56 bit private key. /this is a wild guess, I don't have any special clearance or access/

I also dont know anything but Im sure AI / cloud / blockchain / mongoDB / (insert fad here) will solve it due to synergy and other buzzwords.

Not a chance. OTP for sure.

What’s the significance of the first six characters? They repeat them multiple times before reading off the full message multiple times.

Those six are the preamble, they identify the message.

If you wanted to ask someone whether they received a message, you'd ask if they received the preamble, and not the entire message which can be quite long.

An OTP is secure only if the key is truly random.

As we saw from eMudhra this week, people do stupid things.

There are four lights.

I wonder if the programmer too got brainwashed-failed in ST:NG

eMudhra does stupid things, NSA does not. Not with NC2.

Sheesh, hopefully a governmental department that has the NSA nearby would've been warned about this...

Then again, it is the government...

The issue is overpopulation. In an underpopulated area neighbors tend to be neighbors, in an overpopulated one they tend to call police on your noisy kids to take you down a peg.

Mom said it's my turn to shoehorn my pet issue into an unrelated discussion.

It's actually about restrictive zoning preventing sufficiently dense housing and high quality public transit.

There is also an issue of motivation and putting in 10,000 hours to become an expert (and remain an expert).

It's the same in the software engineering, there is a shift from software engineering to managing SWE agents, with the associated loss of expertise.

It's a hard challenge, but it is not unique or impossible to solve. Aviation industry faced it long time ago with autopilots. Autopilots took over nearly all aspects of routine flight and left pilots without time/ability to practice their skills. While these skills are needed in an emergency. Well, the industry solves it through certification, training and simulation.

The U.S. government confirmed that its gold reserves remain unchanged, although the definition of "gold," is undergoing modernization.

Following efficiency measures affecting independent oversight in FY2025, the transition is expected to substantially reduce storage costs and security requirements. Under the program, gold bars are exchanged for TrumpBarz™, a cryptocurrency developed through a sovereign–foreign public–private partnership. Its ownership structure is described as "fully transparent," and reportedly associated closely with Mr. Putin, a connection officials dismissed as "purely geographical, financial, and personal.". "This is the biggest heist in history," reported The Downhill, shortly before being informed of violating various national security directives and revocations of its press credentials. The Trump administration declined to comment, while Mr. Musk noted in his interview to us: "Storing digital certificates is much more efficient than storing gold bars. We have reduced the weight of America’s gold reserves by 100% without changing a single number in the spreadsheet."

It's more or less reverse to the mean. The period in which a people had both access to education and leverage through their labor and intellect is super short. For most of recorded history, the bulk of humanity lived as peasants, serfs, or slaves. They were mostly illiterate, bound to the land or to a master, and had little power to bargain over the terms of their (or their children) lives.

I'm too young to be financially secure given my impoverished background, not having parents in my life, being homeless as a teenager, etc. But too old and physically disabled to change course from tech. Nothing to do but keep walking through this tunnel and see where it ends up. It's scary!

I've had a couple of lucky breaks but I worry about my kids. About their ability to find meaning in life, their ability to find a way to stay afloat and about their ability to continue to form long term relationships with other humans who are turning inwards ever more.

It's crazy, intellectual and creative pursuits gave my life meaning and direction. What now? How do we create paths for our children to do the same given that it looks like the human experience is well on its way to full commoditization?

If you find out, let me know, mail in profile.

Ha! I was planning to reach out to you regarding this over the weekend :)

We've brushed shoulders enough on HN that I would like to strengthen that bond. I also wonder if building some kind of focused mailing list over this topic would be helpful to others. I think right now we all need solidarity more than ever.

same here, and it often keeps me up at night. for a few years i really felt like i had finally managed to get on track towards escaping the poverty i was born into, now i'm not so sure anymore in the long term. the good thing is at least i know i somehow managed to claw my way upwards from rock bottom to a tech job once already, so whatever the future might throw at me i'll probably be able to somehow deal with that too.

I wish I had your confidence. I also climbed up the ladder a ways but I've been hit by a pretty serious medical diagnosis, a layoff, and this AI stuff... I feel extremely screwed

"The arc of the moral universe is long but it reverts to the mean" is somehow less inspiring.

>For most of recorded history, the bulk of humanity lived as peasants, serfs, or slaves. They were mostly illiterate, bound to the land or to a master, and had little power to bargain over the terms of their (or their children) lives.

I feel like we should be doing everything we can to not revert back to that way of life.

No man wants to do the things that need to be done, maybe it's the birth control in the water

Disagree. Scribes, doctors, bankers, and government clerks always existed, even if the education to do it was expensive and exclusive. For the first time in history, this labor, including its knowledge content might become automated and commoditized.

Yes, on the other hand these positions were usually not given to serfs. Positions were usually filled by a ruler, selecting from his subjects, largely determined by birth rights.

Bankers did not exist in 10,000 BC

You're talking “always existed” too literally.

OpenAI most certainly have a "skin" in math and physics.

They hire math and physics grads and good command of math is very useful in computer science, machine learning and AI.

What qualities do the recruiters at OpenAI value in the mathematics and physics graduates that they hire?

And how do you see these qualities changing over, say, the next decade?

OpenAI is concerned about math and physics insofar as these skillsets enable their current staffing model. That is not exactly durable.

It's weird that AI hockey stick is coinciding with the climate hockey stick.

Why?

Thwy are probably trying to make some statement about data centers energy use.

If hockey and thus hockey sticks were never invented, climate change would not exist.

"According to a police statement on Facebook"

Is this because 5090ies were scalped by RAM upgrade dealers?

Wouldn't be surprised, if a human attorney would get 5%, while copy-pasting ChatGPT answers, report in the results a week past the deadline, with a $12,500 retainer charged upfront.
