Yes. There are too many people entire retirements on the line to hide behind the usual song and dance people do around this. What's the alternative. Let them proceed, the bubble burst, tank the market, then have the poorest and least equipped people to manage a recession just suffer? This is exactly what a government for the people could do. Or we could just keep letting rich assholes destroy everything with no consequences.
Do you really expect to learn something that you don't already know by making Anthropic do two quarters of audited financials? What happens then? Come up with another reason for delay?
Look, if it makes you feel better, I'm happy to state that I thought the SpaceX IPO price was too high and that it is probably still too high. But in the long run, it might turn out to be a great investment.
I believe that the Anthropic IPO price will be too high, but also in the long run it might turn out to be a great investment.
The most important thing I believe is that this is what I signed up for when I bought lots and lots of VTI. And that I can change to a different set of investments pretty much instantly for 9 hours a day, 5 days a week. With no tax hit because it's in my retirement account.
There is a difference between SoaceX and Anthropic. The former is objectively ahead of competitors by many years while Anthropic is at best by few months and pressure from open weights models is increasing.
So even if one believes in AI the rational choice is to invest into hardware that AI companies needs (GPUs, gas turbines, batteries, solar panels)
You aren't required to invest in the stock market. There is nothing stopping you from exclusively investing in CD's, corporate bonds, Government bonds, or even cash for your retirement.
Of course those are less volatile, and therefore provide lower returns, hence you will need to save significantly more and spend significantly less, but that's not you being forced to invest in the stock market. That's just the reality of risk/return trade-offs.
Pretty gross seeing this kind of paternalistic view get so much agreement on HN. The "poorest and least equipped people" are invested in the stock market? Give me a break.
The wealthiest Americans have never owned so much of the stock market, with the top 10% now holding a record 93% of US equities, according to Federal Reserve data.
the bottom 50% of Americans owned just 1% of all stocks and mutual fund shares
Vitamin D has helped me as well as many of my immigrant friends tremendously when we moved from South Asia to Canada. Been taking 5000 IU for 15 years.
Two things can be true. Deepseek is a great model doing great things for democratizing AI and the federal government should never use a Chinese model for anything serious or sensitive, China will have access to literally everything. And before anyone gets upset over that, China would be crazy to use American models for anything sensitive because you have to assume the US government could access it. It goes both ways.
This ban also applies to on-prem hosting of Deepseek, and to finetunes/post-trains of Deepseek models that are provided by US-based inference providers. It's not a given that the Chinese would be able to access any of that.
It’s also not a certainty that they wouldn’t be able to access it. Verification of everything would be prohibitively expensive, it’s far cheaper to have US-based LLM companies which are compliant to whatever standard already be used, even if their tokens are more expensive.
So these are open weight models. You can run them on your own hardware. How would they have “access to literally everything”? Or what is the threat model you are thinking about here?
To be fair, it is possible that an open-weight model could still hose you by exfiltrating data in response to prompt injection. Whether or not it's abliterated doesn't change that fact.
Say I'm doing advanced semiconductor fabrication research. All of the papers in the field go straight into my local model for digestion. But a lot of those papers are from the same adversarial nation that provided my model weights, and the newest one from XXX University of YYY has a particular phrase in it that lights up some activations that I didn't know about. If that system has access to anything beyond a bunch of academic papers, there is a potential risk of exfiltration or even outright sabotage. The latter could range from providing intentional misinformation to bricking expensive hardware Stuxnet-style.
Imposing your own strict data-access guardrails will probably be the best you can do, at least for a while. But it's soooo tempting to just hand-wave it away and give the model the keys to your kingdom.
Yes! That is the danger. That the model is a “manchurian candidate”. It might be engineered to act against your best interest in some circumstances.
The circumstances can be very narrow. For example the code word you mentioned which activates a whole different personality with different objectives.
It can be also much more broad. Like a model which is engineered to be quite good at web dev but to slip in subtle buffer overflows into any driver code it writes, or to mess up when it is working on multi threaded syncronisation in a way which results in infrequent but serious lock-ups.
Or very broadly, like have correct sounding but dangerous advice about economics policy.
Or even broader. Engineer it to amplify the chanches of AI psychosis in users who are prone to it. Detect when someone went off the rails and push them even further. But perhaps only when prompted in English, not when prompted in Chinese.
Now. Is any of this happening? Eh. Probably not. Not yet at least. We can barelly make these work. But still, probably best to not risk it in sensitive applications, because it is hard to prove an AI is “safe” and “aligned” even when the creators work on your team.
Society basically says money = good. God forbid we treat a sex worker with respect but if you're precious little Johnny works at Facebook finding new and exciting ways to get teenagers even more addicted to their phones it's all good because he makes a lot of money and money = good.
There are tons of sex workers that rake in money that even FAANG engineers will never see in 10 lives (e.g OF 'models'). I doubt much of society has any respect for them though.
What gave you that idea that there are tons of them? That's like saying some actors will make more than 10x a FAANG engineer. Sure some.will, but most who go into it will make much less. Based on stats from a OF model agency, less than 1% make more than 10,000 a month. [1].
I have more respect for only fans models then fellow software developers nowadays. At least only fans models produce something others find valuable. We don't provide anything valuable anymore.
No, it is not obvious, especially to anyone who lives in a rural area. There is a type of smooth-brained reactionary person who will buy the biggest gas-guzzling truck he can find just because you told him not to.
You should have mentioned cocaine, meth, anything that strips away your ability to empathize. If she took shrooms she’d have had some connection to her fellow humans.
