Man fuck that. Audio engineers lost their minds snapping all these live performances. One thing to make dance music on the grid but a live high school band?

As the “exception that proves the rule”, there’s a fair bit of dance music that intentionally goes off grid to either build tension or sound more organic. There are even entire subgenres dedicated to sampling more acoustic and traditional instruments (usually percussion) while embracing underengineered sound.

Always appreciated this Beck song, that has what I assume is a programmed drum beat, for having a kick drum strike near the end of the loop that seems deliberately off the beat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvGjG_cmecU

J Dilla was famous for nudging programmed and sampled beats for musical effect. https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Dilla_time

Yeah, especially for a high school band. I'm sure budget was limited and they probably didn't have time for retakes. Playing to a click isn't easy, and playing to backing tracks not perfectly in time with a click is even harder. These are high school kids and professionals will tell you this isn't easy. Given that they probably didn't have time to go through and manually clean things up, you snap it to a grid so it doesn't sound like a mess.

It sounding like a mess is the entire reason it would be valuable. It represents an actual real thing that actually happened at this particular point in your life.

Like, why not just have ChatGPT redub over it at that point.

They do. Suno markets itself to artists and producers heavily. Why hire session players when you can use AI? Why have a studio/SE prepare your masters when you can use AI? Feels gross to me, but that’s the pitch.

I looked at the code a year ago and decided I will always avoid it.

The research is sound and comprehensive. Validate someone’s emotions then try and fix the problem.

Did it survive the replication crisis? File drawer effect? Social science produces whatever results are prestigious in the current intellectual academic zeitgeist. I have zero trust in any of it and will trust a random granny's life experience more.

As the parent of a 4 year old, we're allowed to raise them to be mini us until the tell us otherwise, then we can respectfully disengage. Sharing things we're good at and enthusiastic about only helps kindle their enthusiasm for things in general, in my experience.

I’ve reimplemented some python science code into rust using LLMs and it absolutely works well if you setup the criteria for done. In my case it was GIS-ish code so a key requirement was identical in/out pairs at 10k points across CONUS. It worked, and when it didn’t it showed up bugs that the agent would go and research, read up on other implementations, then try again.

Net result faster (10-70x) and massively lower memory footprint. Now we’ve got a service that can do something essentially instantly that most people wouldn’t have even bothered to try before.

I think coding is done, as a trade practice. But a lot of jobs have sucked for a while anyway - endless api glue, js tedium.

There’s now a chance to do more with software.

I actually think art is safe. The machines don’t value it but we do. There’s something in that.

True art yeah, and people are rebelling a bit on entertainment (I don't think that will last once you can't tell). But already crushing the commercial art jobs that supported a lot of people while they did their unprofitable real art.

music is so safe. ai generated music hasnt made a dent yet?

Its good enough to replace most stock music, or a jingle in a commercial or a quick musical hit at the beginning of a video or show. Also if you combine a knowledgeable producer with AI they can use it to make more things faster which puts pressure on supply and prices out smaller producers.

stock music. u mean muzak? maybe it would be called muzlop.

you would think given harmony and counterpoint so well understood, AI would be composing symphonies by now that famous orchestras would Q to play?

What if AI is everywhere in music but nobody openly admits it?

That's definitely the case in games as well. Most places, like Steam, now have 'AI disclosure' fields, but they do nothing but incentivize lying, because just about everybody is using it, but nobody wants to be associated with the slop that you can produce using it, so nobody wants to admit it. Those disclosure fields should really just go away as they serve no productive purpose.

Piano tuning is still safe for now.

Yes, definitely load bearing.

Today, I asked Opus what it’s gibberish actually means. It started with (topic about signing implementation):

> This is your coat token, to my coat hanger in the opera.

On one hand - maybe yes??! On the other who the hell speaks like that and it’s so specific…

I’d expect Alice and Bob with locks or house keys. Is this infamous old book scanning (and destroying) affecting latest models?

> On one hand - maybe yes??!

No.

Sounds like one of those "Is to as Is to" analogy questions from the SAT.

Are you sure you didn't typo signing as singing somewhere?

> > This is your coat token, to my coat hanger in the opera.

that is fucking insane

how on earth is Anthropic allowing this to happen? AGI? kill us all? I refuse to believe any of that until they can get this basic shit sorted out, I mean seriously, it's becoming a joke at this point

> it’s gibberish

ironic

load-bearing!

Yes I agree. I got it to vibe up a simple react router app. When it crashed it was obvious that it had totally swallowed all errors in the name of a tidy error page. Getting it to re-add logs and debuggable errors was an exercise in patience as astra just got more and more tweaked while trying to solve the problem.

From an alignment perspective I’ve got no idea who it’s aligned to but it isn’t me, the meat proxy, who just wants to know why it crashed.

Public libraries pay for their books

Proust. In search of lost time (caveat I’m halfway through book one) is a story in which almost nothing happens but it is described exquisitely.

Indeed. This is usually the go-to example of writing as performance art. So far I haven't had the courage to dip my toe in.
