Fined maybe? But jailed is a bit too much. There are poor people who jump the turnstile who are not violent nor a nuisance, why make the assumption that anyone who jumps the turnstile is that bad actor you describe? I jumped the turnstile a few months ago (more like I crawled under in a frenzy like an idiot), I was running late for work, found out my card had to be refilled but there was a line at the machine and the train was approaching the station. Am I a violent criminal? If I got caught it would be fair to fine me but would you jail me?
As far as nuisance and violence on public transportation, that's a different problem that I agree it has to be dealt with. Apparently police don't do anything about it, they instead hunt for fare jumpers...
It's sad. The reality you describe is hard to grasp for many but it's the reality of modern life in many ways. I can't say that I wouldn't resort to saying things that I don't fully believe in if one of my friends was on the verge. I would give it shot to make them reconsider it and perhaps it was just an irrational moment.
My sister killed herself about 20 years ago. It wasn't a spur of the moment thing. She was an extremely intelligent and physically-capable person. What she did was both very elaborate and very planned, and it is clear that she had rationalized this escape for a long time before she began the lengthy process of executing it.
Nobody but her saw it coming, and I still do not know what kind of resources could ever have succeeded at allowing her to make a different decision.
But I am sure that whatever it was that her demons and issues consisted of, that none of them could have been excised by simple platitudes, abject kindness, or minimizing the problems by pretending to be able to relate. She was smarter than that.
Curious, how do you do this? What tools are you using to build and manipulate the graphs, and how do you feed that context back to the agents? The manual organization part sounds particularly interesting.
Is it just the young men whose mental health is declining? I'd go a generation earlier and see how things start to get pretty bad. A lot of kids these days don't hang out in person, they are hanging out virtually while laying down in their beds or in comfortable chairs in front of their consoles or computers playing video games online. This is quite unealthy way to grow up. A lot of teenagers, male or female are also undetachable from their cellphones and social media too. This is also a very unhealthy way to grow up.
Even when assuming that a decline in hanging out in person is a huge factor, it is particularly bad for the youngest. Because all the suburbia+birthrate trends get much worse at the point where the number of same-age peers within comfortable reach of available transportation drops from 1 to 0. The same basic principle was less awful for the earlier generation that more likely lived through a comparatively mild 3 to 2 drop, and remains less bad for those that grew up just in time to make up for the distance with reasonable affordable petrol.
Hope to see a new market for disabling telemetry and phonehome features from cars. It should be legal to do so, if you own the car I suppose. I'm thinking that rigth now few pople even know how much spying their new car does to them but this will change and as awareness grows more and more people will want to do it.
Sure, that goes without saying. But the current direction of anticonsumer surveillance seems to be going in a different direction. While waiting for the pendullum to hit back we can take it into our own hands and protect ourselves.
It's probably a good idea to reduce phone computing to a minimum. Also the larger phone will likely damage your vision to need glasses eventually but there are other ergonomic factors at play. Do you want to hold your phone with two hands? Doesn't it get tiring for wrists to hold the phone in the position? I personally reduced phone usage but am still using a SE2022 which is a small phone. For reading I got a e ink reader and Im very happy with that.
There’s a difference between on-topic discussions relevant to the post and “discussions” that veer off into the same emotional tribal rants that we see constantly now. We try to ignore it but the constant negativity and “us vs them” is not healthy, let alone meaningful discussion.
