Just today I installed an irc server, well three, and will try to convince my small group of friends to switch our comms to that. Nice to see the protocol evolving.

I hope they enjoy communicating in plaintext, not having any chat history and being unable to send images.

None of these is actually true with IRCv3:

- client/server communication is IRC-over-TLS by default when using modern servers, e.g. Ergo, but afaik also Libera/OFTC/etc support TLS [1]

- Ergo comes with a built-in bouncer, you get all the history according to whatever Ergo has set as retention [2]

- client have now support file uploads too [3]

Playing the devil’s advocate, my domains get constantly scanned from DO ips. I know it’s not feasible but some basic kyc on DO’s side would probably help.

Accenture …that tracks

I’ve had multiple instances of my Mac unlocking while I was more than 5-6 meters away. At some point I decided not to trust the time of flight calculation and disable it.

I’m going to post this every time there’s a new markdown to pdf submission: quarto (https://quarto.org) is my go to tool. You can use it in R Studio, visual studio code or the cli. Uses pandoc under the hood, has support for latex and many more niceties.

And why is that a problem? Their website, their content, their choice.

I didn’t suggest it was a problem?
