Errr… not that long ago using the zone system (during shooting, developing and printing!) to got a good negative and print. Your 20 years old D70 is doing a lot of heavy lifting you are not even aware of!

Even ~20yo lower tier digital cameras still required understanding what light meter meters and correcting for it.

I know. I cut my teeth with a Pentax MZ-50, so I have experience with understanding the camera, its light meter and how to compensate for it.

I probably shot less than 100 frames in full auto mode with that D70s, rest was apeture priority or full manual. The reason I still love my D70s is it behaves like an analog camera very much, from its light meter correction needs to ISO response of the sensor.

When compared to it, shooting with A7-III still feels like cheating sometimes. Maybe I should get the Pentax fixed or start playing with the Canonette 28 I have.

Started, the resource conflict has.

Probably hybrid is best.

Row level locking and update indeed works, most of the time - bugs are a real issue.

som write ledger and update row in the same transaction.

then in bg have a batch ledger verification, probably on a read replica, and flag any discrepancy.

I fail to understand your point, if there is any?

What does your two decades old experience from a completely different economy has to do with any young person today?

no, it’s absolutely awesome.

I can move across the repos fixing whatever god damn bothers me, without ever talking to anyone.

Code and commit/review messages have always been all the communication needed.

The thing is, most humans don’t communicate in order to exchange information, but in order to regulate their emotions.

Yeah this is infinitely preferable to meetings, particularly if you're on remote teams where someone is forced to be online at unhealthy hours

Just… venting? I mean u never know i guess but under some circumstances it could be the healthy option, assuming there’s no real intent

Yeah, I hope they were venting. (But I feel sorry for them if they were.)

EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. there is a mass shooting there are a series of red flags where people "hoped" weren't really real.

We don't feel sorry for this nonsense we punish it, whether it's "real" or not you have no right to share your fantasies of violence and real or not you need to be treated like they are and removed from society.

Yeah, I guess I agree with your thoughts. But keep in mind, the person may not have intended to "share their fantasies of violence." The details of the writing was described as a diary. See:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49961057

https://www.techspot.com/news/114091-florida-woman-used-clau...

This thread seems to be a dupe of that story.

If I saw someone's diary for whatever reason and their most recent entry was about getting a gun and shooting someone they knew, I'd report it to the police too.

An arrest isn't a conviction but this kind of fantasizing in any manner is probable cause for an arrest and grounds for a trial.

Arguably there should be a reporting duty for these kinds of thing.

I wish more people making threats got this treatment.

> EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. there is a mass shooting there are a series of red flags where people "hoped" weren't really real.

That might be because the vast majority of people showing those flags are just regular people frustrated, not actual psychopaths. Rather than punishing this behavior, it should be treated to help them manage frustration.

Hell, emotional intelligence should be taught since kindergarten, it's not surprising we mostly behave like savages in clothes, we focused one half of the brain, and left the rest to chance.

Do you think the only people acting these things out are "psychopaths"?

Yes therapeutic intervention is ultimately how you stop these things from progressing but if you've gotten to the point that people see your threats and they seem plausible you need law enforcement and the judiciary involved deciding if you need to be removed from society not just a pat on the head from a social worker. Ideally you can get the help you need incarcerated.

At minimum this Florida woman needs to have her rights to own a firearm removed and be put on probation and in some kind of court ordered therapy.

IMO it takes a psychopath, or sociopath, to kill others for pleasure. I see it as how many of us could look down from the top of the Eiffel tower, feel the intrusive thought of jumping down, maybe consider it, but a very small minority with mental health problems will actually jump. Mental health problems that could be helped instead of punished given the opportunity.

I'm fine living in a society where "venting" reasonably actionable threats gets you put in prison as if they were real threats.

> reasonably actionable threats

This is the part that law doesn't understand. It's binary, crime or no crime, threats or no threats, there is no gradient. The judge and jury can be the gradient, but as soon as precedence grows, that margin keeps shrinking.

One customer screams at another at a Wall Mart: "I will kill you for this!". How do we judge 'reasonably actionable' in this case? Words can't kill, so it's always an empty threat?

Yeah, well, that's one huge difference between you and me.

I recently needed a lawyer on something that involved lots of highly sensitive PI.

Sending my file over to lawyers in a semi-safe way has proved impossible.

And in any case, i received an answer with lots of PI over a plain email…

Absolutely maddening

Why? I would assume encrypting and sending the key via a different channel would be sufficient. Or are lawyers still not technically apt to do so?

Then lawyer replies in plain email discussing those very things...

The lawyers I’ve used have always asked and used encrypted email. I don’t know if that’s regional, but it was taken very seriously here.

Probably greatly depends how old the lawyer is and how big the law firm is.

If it's one older guy, good luck. You're probably better off doing everything by FAX honestly.

If normal people aren't, I wouldn't expect lawyers to be either. If there's no happy path to encrypted communication, then it will not happen.

It's part of their job. If they can't do that right they certainly can't do the rest of their job right. Just like it's OK to get queazy if your doctor is functionally illiterate or your lifeguard can't swim. Also things that match average people in some areas.

“We can’t open this”

It was .7z with strong pwd. The normal zip is supposedly too weak according to llms

Was Signal an option you have considered? It's designed to be secure even if the user is non-technical.

Well for sure we absolutely certainly know what it absolutely certainly isn’t causing it so it absolutely doesn’t need to be researched.

The parent was basically blaming people for living unhealthy lifestyles without a shred of evidence, even circumstantial. It's not helpful, and perpetuates negative "victim blaming" biases without justification.

Or, to put it differently: It's not like the article said all the cancer patients were fat; and it's not a conclusion I'd jump to.

The key unresolved question is: why do LLMs follow instructions, especially system prompt?

And I don’t see a good answer which is not worrying if not spooky.

What’s unresolved about it?

They are assembled to. We tweak the numbers, bit by bit, trillions of times, to maximize the chances of desirable output.

they are quite unreliable at consistently following instructions, it's one part training, one part inherent (imu)

Managers are needed to sustain the management.
