In a time of declining globalism and growing[1] nationalism[2] and anti-immigration sentiment around the world, I think it is unsurprising that a historically[3] xenophobic culture would move in this direction.

Let's be honest, the Japanese gov't has killed off every generation since the asian bubble popped in the 90's. Those kids in the 90's that still can't get a job should be in their peak earning years and have strong talent skills, (and having kids) which was all sacrificed. They don't have the skills or tax base they should and they are unwilling to actually fix it because the stock market needs to crash big time and the rich need to pay for it.

I completely agree with your comment about Japan killing every generation since the bubble popped. It has been wild to witness.

The subtle but profound ways those generations have experienced being essentially abandoned by the government and “Japan Inc” will have a lasting impact on Japan for many decades to come.

There are some leaders who actually grasp the problem and actually have decent ideas for solutions, but the will and capacity to execute those ideas just isn’t there.

I recall excel being decent once upon a time, back in the early 2000's, before the ribbon interface was added.

The introduction of the Office ribbon was one of the biggest improvements in software that I have ever experienced.

I'm baffled why so many of these KVM devices don't support PoE.

Give me a single-screen phone the size of this thing closed, and use the extra space inside for more battery and not more displays.

Aside: I'd also love it if it could be plugged into an external display and have a "desktop mode" (like a macos VM) that gets suspended/resumed on connect/disconnect instead of just expanding the "mobile mode" across the new screen. I realize this is probably a dream too far for most companies though, as it doesn't allow them to segment the market as much as requiring people to buy multiple devices.

I remember Ubuntu were going for that “dock it and it’s a full computer” idea about 10 years back with their failed phone OS project.

just buy this phone and don't open it up

Nice. That's right up there with "pretty sure a macbook pro could fit into most cargo pants pockets".

Especially rich coming from X Corp, with their xAI-Bot web scrapers.

I didn't get much use out of XCancel, because it usually assumed I was a bot and refused to show me the page.

It's web scrapers with anti-scraping filters, all the way down.

I had the same experience with XCancel, but nitter.net worked for me.

I also used to use direnv (and likewise eschewed .env), but more recently I moved env definitions to mise. Been working out nicely.

Codefloe[1] is another forjego (with some custom patches, I believe) hosted instance.

As a kid in the 80s/90s who spent a non-zero amount of time in a mall, I just wanted to highlight how great this name is.

Those things were delicious.

Wow. Someone could be "chief ethicist at Meta" under Zuckerberg for 6 years, but couldn't make it even a single year under Altman.

That's an interesting data point.

With “Chevron Deference” struck down, I assume this means the courts will get to decide if it is in fact gambling or not?
