When I had no exercise routine, my back acted up. I think distilling it into laziness is, well, a lazy take on it. It’s very hard to make proactive actions and work off delayed gratification. Especially when you are in pain. Pain is often all encompassing and you can’t perform long term thinking, and when you are out of pain (laying in bed) then you are just so happy to be relieved. It’s hard

That’s not at all how all alcoholics feel. Sounds like you may be in the early stages of recovery. I recommend checking out an AA meeting. Then you’ll see what’s possible with a program, help, and work.

Nice! I always tell people that recovery is really just about being awesome. Doing the next right thing is critical. And for an alcoholic, the next right thing is never “have a drink”. Everyone else, enjoy :)

And for those who can't do it on their own, there is also therapy and AA. I've met plenty of people who developed a problem and cleaned up on their own. But some people can't, and 12 step fellowships and therapy are great for that. And of course replacing bad habits with healthy ones. Good ad for AllTrails by the way

This is totally normal. The first year is really tough. Takes most people 2-3 years to start feeling confident in situations like weddings, bars, bbqs etc. A good indicator is barely noticing the booze in these places. If you're focusing on the booze, you aren't ready. no big deal,it takes time. also recommend AA - find a meeting you like and get a sponsor you also like. That, along with outside therapy ideally an addiction specialist, and one day soon you might realize that you don't give a shit what people think of you and that actually you are really great and there truly is nothing to escape from.

I said it before and I’ll say it again - kotlin is the most fun programming language.

I switched into medical 4 years ago because my top priority was making something that directly improves peoples lives. Early in my career it wasn’t so much of a concern. Now it’s a must. There are many companies like this. Highly recommended if you have the desire

I’m an expert software engineer. I would categorize something that multiplies my productivity by > 2x is transformative. AI has certainly done that and more for me

Because it’s so powerful and versatile. The other day my wife took a picture of our living room and chathgpt picked out the perfect rug. That’s both a better search and avoided, say, an interior decorator. In that scenario it’s kinda both.

But only a small part of AI applications are that search-like. I mean we could even argue if this is still only search, but that's semantics and boring. But even if we would, there are a lot more applications than pure search. So the GP's original claim that it's just an improved form of something that doesn't put people out of a job, and also puts large amounts of people out of a job, doesn't make sense. Framing tax advise as "yeah it's just a better way to search tax codes" is in the same boat. It's such a massive improvement of both searching and synthesizing that it's a bit weird to call it that. Like saying a 2026 car is just an improvement of a Model T.

I think we agree. I think we’ve barely touched the surface on its applications. It’s digitized reasoning. That’s hard to wrap one’s head around. My hope is that the vertical applications that gain traction aren’t from a handful of companies.

I advise people to seek out small companies, ideally ones going through product/market fit. Like, they recently came up with something to sell and have begun selling it. Resource-constrained, good growth, not super explosive. You can find one (including mine!). In this environment you will quickly learn how to do more with less, identify the real problems, deliver quickly, work directly with customers, learn the domain (not just tech), and how to build good products. After this, go ahead and work for a big company if you want and you'll be amazed how well you do.
