The tech industry will continue to promise steak and deliver hot dogs.

If you want to experience the height of paper as a technology, pick up some Tomoe River paper (https://bungu.store/products/tomoe-river-notebook-sakae-tech...) or a Hobonichi Techo and some nice Japanese gel pens, or fountain pens, even a cheap pilot Kakuno fountain pen will do, and you will understand why paper will never die.

Excellent, thanks for the paper suggestion, I’ve been needing another unnecessary luxury expense in my life!

Ior scrap paper and a half-sharpened yellow pencil, on a piece of scrap plywood sitting across saw horses.

I was optimistic that Apple would get this right but Siri AI is yet another embarrassment in a long continuing series of Apple embarrassments.

I went from being overly exuberant on AI to now thinking it probably should be banned outright. From a consumer perspective, the tech industry is a dead end and the internet now is at best a pipeline for content for your TV and sound system and the rest feels like it should be ignored and avoided.

Unless there are radical changes on the horizon, there is no way I’m investing any more in the Apple ecosystem and I’m saying this as a former Apple employee and fan.

AI works. It's that Apple is serving up shit models because they're giving it away for free. Can't expect much from a 9b model. Now the 172b I'm running at home works great.

For many outside the US, and undoubtedly some within it, the term SI is a source of embarrassment. But it’s good to know who bends the knee.

I read that as the US being the SI unit for embarrassment for a minute.

There's a joke here about the US adopting the SI system... but it would be sad whichever way the punchline lands.

> For many outside the US, and undoubtedly some within it, the term SI is a source of embarrassment.

Speaking as one of those in the US, we have so much to be embarrassed about that the "super intelligence" thing barely registers on the scale.

I mean, yeah, it is stupid, but it is relatively quaint when compared to:

the stupidest war we've ever gotten ourselves into (high bar), the random murderous boat strikes, the immigration debacle and continued state-sanctioned murdering of both innocent immigrants and American citizens, the concentration camps (yes, we have concentration camps), the abandonment of the previous rules-based world order, the constant threatening of our own allies, the ongoing religification, loyalty purge and subsequent weakening of the US military, the quadrupling down on a fossil fuel economy in the face of very real climate change impacts globally, the very real and IMO likely possibility the current administration will attempt to nullify our upcoming election if it doesn't go their way, etc, etc.

You forgot public executions!

A silly joke until being on the right side of it becomes a loyalty test, like election fraud, Trump’s intellect, height and weight, etc.

The point of something stupid like this is the power he gains by making you agree to say it.

It shocks me that people don’t understand who he is. Ignorant yes, vile, bigoted, cruel, illiterate, all those things. But he is not domain-generally stupid: he is a terrible genius at humiliation, at breaking people, at hollowing them out.

It may not be work, finally. But he is better at it than any other living person.

Apparently there is a flap you can place on them to block out light.

The real political theatre is coming from Alberta. Secession can't be achieved unilaterally under Canadian constitutional law. A clear majority on a clear referendum question would create an obligation to negotiate.

More critically, the Numbered Treaties (6, 7, and 8, and to a lesser extent 4 and 10) make the entire idea, for all practical purposes, a legal dead end. These are nation-to-nation covenants with the Crown and not with the province.

To leave with its borders intact, Alberta would have to negotiate constitutional amendments with Ottawa and the other provinces, while securing affected First Nations’ consent to any transfer or replacement of their treaty relationships with Canada in a situation where Alberta has almost no leverage.

Good luck.

> A clear majority on a clear referendum question would create an obligation to negotiate.

To be further clear: it would create an obligation on the Alberta government to negotiate. A provincial referendum creates no such obligation on the Canadian government.

Alberta's existence as a province was predicated upon those Treaties existing in the first place. It and Saskatchewan were part of the NW Territories until like 1905.

Only sane response in this thread about this topic. Thank you.

I’m hopeful that closer ties with Europe could give Canadians a chance to learn from European agriculture and food culture.

Canada needs a new perspective in how we produce and sell food here. I’d love to see us move away from a food system dominated by crappy US-style highly engineered, ultra-processed products and toward a much greater variety of fresh and minimally processed foods, stronger regional production, and a richer everyday food culture.

I would welcome EU grocery chains and food producers to shake things up here and bring some sanity back to Canadian food culture.

Coincidentally, a tweet from OpenAI's Tibo yesterday:

I think you're right. We're at the point where Apple is sort of out of steam in terms of hardware and software and their products are mature and the company has become more risk averse. They need gimmicks to get people to upgrade and I'm sure we will see more attempts like this in the future. These sorts of devices have limited use cases, like people who are on the road a lot for work or leisure, and of course this appeals to tech enthusiasts or the vanity tech crowd.

It'll be a nice device for some, but I think we're at the stage where device upgrades are no longer going to be a yearly or even biennial thing with all things considered.

Pre-IPO positioning … or how a charity dedicated to saving humanity from the apocalypse realized the most responsible thing to do was float 15% of the apocalypse on the NASDAQ.

its like in the exorcist, except the demon is the charity: "the power of capitalism compels you!"

"It is, Jay. It's pretty compelling."

After struggling with Gemini for months, I think the trick to getting the most out of the model is writing a really solid personal intelligence/instructions prompt. The results are night and day in terms of performance.

Funnily enough you really do need a great prompting and SKILLS setup to use antigravity effectively in contrast to other providers which actually started benefiting from less detailed prompts over time. But I like it this way, its more customizable and much cheaper especially with a sub.

agy is good for those cases where you are willing to put the effort into the harness specifically for a task or family of tasks. The full suite, with evals, monitoring, hooks, custom tools, custom verifiers, etc,. It is not good if you want a "general coding assistant" like codex or claudecode.

The reality is that if you optimise a harness for a family of tasks[1], then most of these models give successful output. And there, gemini flash's speed shines.

For general coding assistant, you want it to be well, general, and you use a harness without too much customisation to something specific. Here you need deeply post trained coding assistants and implementors like codex/sol or claude/opus. Gemini flash in its current form will be too happy-go-lucky if you try using it the way we all use codex and is better used in a constrained setting.

tl;dr gemini flash for "LLM-aided workflows in production" is super good today. Cheap as well.

slot machine addict thinks if he pushes buttons in a certain order the odds get better.

In all seriousness, gemini has the best interactive planning document/orchestration. Tell it to create a plan document and work through it with it and it will preform really well(in antigravity products). But this is the case with plan modes with every model, I just think the interactive document that antigravity uses is really well thought out.
