"The American Experiment – let’s revive our sense of wonder, curiosity, and responsibility about what America is and can be"
It is repeatedly astonishing how exceptional Americans feel. HN always educate how self - centred American as I dont find here the illiterate and the uneducated but university graduates from the best universites.
For instance on democratic side from Switzerland and Taiwan my country (Germany) can learn more. And how to have a good life, France or Italy or Sweden (list is not finished) are better role models but even then, Germany has its own unique culture which I am currently happy to live in.
It looks good reading it like this but I am always scared about the unintended effects. Like the ... cookie banners. Dynamic pricing absolutely has to go this is so unethical
The cookie banners are not required to be this way. They are deliberately designed to be as annoying as they can legally be (many actually moreso), in part to influence your perspective against GDPR.
The big problem with cookie banners is that they are quite often just outright in violation of the law, and just getting away with it.
I was really hoping for the EU to be more strict in enforcement. Guess they don't feel so strong in trade negotiations right now.
Here in the US, there is also the problem that people are way too overcome with FOMO about the dumbest stuff. I knew someone who would hit "Accept all" instantly for every dialog, and then I helped her with something and clicked the (mostly required and reliable) "Reject all" button instead, and when the site just loaded up and worked after that, she was shocked and said "I didn't know you could do that"
I don't know how to respond to that! The dialog openly tells you every single time that only the "Necessary" cookies are required and you can't turn those off, and every other option can be turned off.
People just don't read! Ever! At all! Their life could depend on it and they would panic instead of just reading one damn sentence in a dialog box and at this point I no longer accept "The industry trained them this way" as an excuse since this affects multiple generations who had dramatically different computing experiences.
In the modern day, every single American can usually access information about anything they want. They can try to answer any question they have. They can try and clear up anything confusing to them. They can form educated opinions!
games will be regulated and cant be easily shut down. Lets see what "Stop killing games" will say.
edit: According above website had too optimistic interpretation. Anyway it looks like Stop Killing Game transforms into pro-consumer video games association. And thats overdue and yet very interesting and missing.
> “Dark patterns” (also called deceptive or manipulative design) are interface choices that steer users towards decisions they would not otherwise make, for example:
> Making the “accept all” option bright and prominent, but hiding “reject” or “manage settings”
Not a direct reference, but it's clear exactly what it's getting at.
Wouldn't call it a big win though. If it's not established as a browser level setting instead of some shitty per-website banner that expires every 3 weeks as the site adjusts its ad serving system once again? We're still in cookie law hell.
Honestly all these kinds of laws should take an example out of EU261 (the flight compensation regulation) book. Set statutory damages and allow private right of action. Air carriers certainly have started to follow law much harder than many other industries after people realized they could fairly easily get compensation when carriers didn't fulfill their obligations.
Depends what you're looking for. If you want fun factoids I like https://marginalrevolution.com/. For introductory topics and macroeconomic ideas, YouTube search topic + pdh economist and videos >=20 minutes is often good although I will say I don't like Varoufakis' opinions when he turns up. That'll all usually end up in the world of podcasts because they host long-form content and leads naturally into more current headline topics.
For trading I do my own research based on whatever statistics come to hand. I have contempt for short term trading news on the theory that I'm too small to be tactical and will just going to ride along with big obvious trends. No recommendations there.
"I stopped reading halfway because it sounded like pure propaganda to me without any justification as to why it was unreasonable." Please stick to the HN rules. Please act in good faith
The mutual assistance clause doesn't oblige member states to support each other with military force even in case of aggression. A member can send blankets, food rations, or even just express diplomatic solidarity. Stretching definitions enough one can call it military alliance, but it is not in any practical form.
Looks like I'm right. I don't read in German regretfully, but what I get with machine translation fully supports my point - national discretion allows for civilian or humanitarian aid rather than an automatic military response
I literally started the discussion from the point that "the mutual assistance clause doesn't oblige member states to support each other with military force" - quoting from the comment just 2 levels above.
I shifted nothing, and as we are on the nets, everybody can verify it above. I said you can stretch the notion of military alliance to cover the EU, but because nobody's obliged to come to your rescue in force, in practical terms it is not.
Like if Russia lands on IS, there's no agreement to defend it even if it joined the union.
>Why not auto translate them?
I did, and I clearly mentioned it. And it supports what I said, isn't it? Can we please agree to read those letters in full, and not run to accuse me after finishing just the first sentence?
OK, the Treaty of the EU does have a mutual defence clause but the military is specifically out of scope.
Considering the huge ramifications of EU membership in all areas it still does seem ridiculously onerous if you are "just" after security and NATO-like alliances.
If only there was a type of nation-wide poll that could be conducted to make such claims so strongly. Maybe we pick a single day, each side makes their cases to the people, and then they cast their choices to be counted. But I guess it can't be done.
