US sanctions alone are responsible for nearly 565,000 deaths/year around the world.[1]
The UN Human Rights Council just confirmed US blockade against Cuba violates human rights and international law, citing Article 33 of Fourth Geneva Convention, which prohibits collective punishment.[2]
Please, not this juvenile “I disagree with the political leaning of a newspaper so I demand everyone else boycott it” student union behaviour.
All sources have their biases. I could come up with several examples of the BBC and Guardian reporting very dubiously, for example (recently the BBC spliced together clips of the US President to make it seem he said something completely fictitious). Few sources are a paragon of truth.
How about we just think critically, and think -independently- about the media we consume. Ignore the authoritarian blow-hards who think their choice of media is the only valid choice for the rest of us.
It's a reference to this story where an OpenAI model broke out of its sandbox during cyber benchmarking and hacked into HuggingFace, in order to obtain test solutions: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48997548
> And then there are the geopolitical tensions. What happens if China or the US cut us off overnight from these technologies? Just a couple of weeks ago the US government showed it was able and willing to cut off non-US citizens from Anthropic’s latest frontier model.
The only evidence you have is US here and all the frontier models from China are free to download. Pure projection.
I might be missing something but what exactly is being projected here? The US did what the author said. It's not farfetched to imagine geopolitical conflicts could, at some point, drive china to do something similar.
> all the frontier models from China are free to download
Maybe? Again, not hard to imagine that they might not be releasing their actual frontier models to the public.
I guess China did not deserve mention. They are the only one releasing open models consitently and not cutting any access. Only US actions show evidence and for the US only.
> The recent meetings (past month) with Alibaba, ByteDance, Z.ai, etc., were primarily about overseas acquisitions, foreign investment, and tech/talent outflow controls and not blocking foreigners from using Chinese AI models.
That is just misleading reporting. Very convenient for US frontier labs. This is actually what happened.
