And English :) to LOL Fook this. Fook that. Bro.

Younger generation of simplified brains will come up with even more simplified languages.

That's nothing. I was crossing Himalaya's by crawling at even slower speed.

Dayuuum, ... you're smart.

I am, but it doesn’t take a genius to know that 125 miles as the crow flies is “less than 2 hours of driving” between like 6 specific pairs of destinations in the whole world.

125 miles as the crow flies is less than three hours (two hours is a little tight) of driving for most trips of that distance people make!

People tend to have friends and family they want to visit regularly. So they try plan their life around not moving too far from where they grew up. That means people won't even look at a move of 125 miles away if there is not good transportation back. In turn if the high speed route between the two destinations they won't move there and in turn won't be making those trips.

Note that I said route above, not highways. Trains, boats, airplanes, cars, or anything else you can imagine works. The method of travel doesn't matter at all. What matters is how long it takes, and that you would use it for the trip.

Half an hour door to door (by whatever travel means) means you can have dinner after work with those friends once in a while. 1 hour means you can visit every weekend, but you lose those dinner mid week dinners. 2-3 hours means you visit for every minor holiday, but it isn't every weekend. At 4-6 hours every visit is an overnight. At 8+ hours this is a week long trip.

The above ranges are guidelines, not rules, they get fudged and overlapped all the time depending on various details. If the trip is 5 hours by train you might still do it as a day trip since you can plan to nap on the train. Even if you have to drive 6 hours each way: you might attend a funeral and return all in one day.

I live in Czechia, in Europe, a first-world country with dense population and a very normal road network. I am now on vacation, and I’m exactly 205 km as the crow flies from where my parents live. If I wanted to drive to them right now, it would be a 309 km trip estimated to take 3.5 hours or, avoiding highways, a 252 km trip, over 4 hours.

I don’t care about the rest of your post, I just want you to understand that a completely straight highway through some corn fields isn’t how the rest of the planet drives.

> I am now on vacation

That is the key here. People go all over the world for vacation. However vacations are not normal life (at least not for the vast majority of people), and can be ignored.

In normal life people have a place they live, and they have people they visit. When looking for a place to live they consider the real trips they take (not cutting through corn fields), and that guides where they move to. People do refuse jobs because they have to move too far from friends/family. People who choose to move away from friends (which does often, it isn't the majority but still common) are choosing to leave behind those friends.

I have no idea what point you’re trying to make or how is my vacation “the key here”. I’m visiting a regular Czech town that just happens to be almost exactly 125 miles from another regular Czech town (the one where my parents live), and I used those two particular towns as an example of how 125 miles can be a pretty big deal in Europe (or really anywhere in the world that’s not the US).

The point is this is not something you do normally because the time doesn't allow. If you could do that trip in 15 minutes you might move there since it would not change your life, but because the trip time doesn't allow you make it vacation.

Let me try again while the day has gone by. You're not the only one who doesn't understand my point.

The correct measure of distance is not something like miles or kilometers. It's time, that is minutes or hours.

Thus your 125 mile distance if that had really good roads that could be an hour and a half trip by car. If you had high speed rail that could be under an hour. If you were a fighter pilot and had permission to use a fighter drive at max speed just minutes (that is costs and the environment is not a concern). Each of those enables something very different about the life of the people who live in those areas.

Thus, when you say it's a lot more than two hours for you to make that trip because of whatever reason, I can in turn infer that this is a major trip that people are making and in turn they're not making it very often. It is fine to make that as a vacation, but if you were to move there permanently, that means you're going to have to find all new friends. You can still go visit the old friends, but it's not something you're going to do very often.

If you just said it was an hour and a half, then if you got an offer to move that far, say a better job, it wouldn't be nearly as big a deal because you could still go visit your friends and family fairly often. It's not something you would do every day and so you would have to find some new friends, but you could also keep your old friends.

If somehow you could do that trip in half an hour, then you could just move there and it would not change anything else about the rest of your life to move. Everyone you currently know, all your friends and family, they're easily within reach of just going to visit anytime you feel like it.

There are usual Apple sheeps ... and then it's you.

WOW, this is some remarkable (would rather use different word starting with R) desperate attempt to somehow turn the reality upside-down,of Apple being overpriced unrepairable unupgrade-able junk sold through pure marketing of exploiting insecurities of losers by selling them something that makes them feel "elite".

Unsolicitated "send via iPhone" SMS footer is perfect example.

> Which is more likely? I’ll cheerfully stipulate Apple is pure evil, serves cooked babies in their cafeterias, whatever it takes to discuss based on reason rather than big-evil-corpos

Only time .zip failed me was like in early 90's because floppy discs failed, not the .zip part.

I think Wright brothers had long history of failed attempts.

And all of sudden, no passengers are crossing Atlantic on ship.

Well, when you fail at everything, you want other's to fail too. Luckily for us, your failure doesn't affect others.

One gotta love politicians and their "solutions" and their longevity.

Internet didn't change, it's population did. It's 8 billion potential victims and all bit more sophisticated thieves under one roof.

Can't blame Internet. People which were scammed "offline" are now scammed online.

The internet is the people using it, if many of its users have come up with more effective ways to exploit the rest than the internet has become a worse place.

The internet is an ecosystem just like any other one on earth. Being it's a pretty new one the typical parasites and viruses that grow in every environment hadn't really developed to fill that ecosystem in the first decade or two of it. Now we are reaching the cambrian explosion of bullshit that the human animal isn't innoculated against.

So yea, the internet is a worse place, but really because the early internet wasn't realistically behaved for the amount of free energy it left around.

You know, we could just put those people in jail if we wanted to. At least when they're traceable - like everyone who uses a phone number or an IP address. They actually do this in Europe,.as a result there aren't many spam calls originating from European numbers.

Internet deserves some blame too, when you have 8 billion people, but only 4 billion addresses, you are naturally going to end up with a lot of centralized services to work around those limits.

You’re right but it’s a point I’ve tried to make for years to no avail.

The V4 limit is one thing that does this. The other is DNS, which is inherently hierarchical because it’s a tree. The whole structure of the net and the web promotes the emergence of aggregation points, which then amass insane amounts of largely unearned power and influence through sheer network effect.

“The medium is the message” is a much deeper statement than people think. The structure of the medium and the sympathetic structures it encourages to form around it are the message. IPv4 with NAT and DNS with its real estate model directly encourage the formation of aggregators and siloes and that’s where it starts.

People don’t get it. I’ve given up trying to explain. Systems thinking isn’t as titillating as conspiracism, doomerism, or misanthropic cynicism I guess.

Does not seem convincing to me so far and i like systems thinking. Do you have a link, where you wrote more?

I think a fundamental problem is that micropayments don’t work. Instead we pay with attention, i.e. by watching ads. That already worked before the internet, in tv and radio and newspapers.

We desperately need to replace ICANN.

I love your incredible story which didn't happen.

Have you some more stories of massive text, huge margins and padding helping UIX for healthy visitors?

Well, being best of the best always pays off.

It's obviously hard to understand to people bad at everything.

TSMC could charge more if they also lent the customer money to buy the chips

Same with ASMl who are the sole company behind their machines.

As could millions of other companies.

This is an unprecedented circular debt gamble. The market price is not based on affordability but distorted by the seller.

Or more accurately being top dog in a duopoly position pays off

Oh ... upwork ... put offer, get 50 replies from people which jump for every penny without even being able to understand the task.

I used it before AI coding and it was getting rough. Lots of US interviews with proxy Chinese or Pakistani workers. Lots of bullshit “I’ve done that; I can do this” and instantly apparent that this was untrue. Just the outright lies… whew.

I haven’t touched it since AI coding.

It’s a bad contractor market now. IDK what I would do if I needed a contractor.

I really miss the early days of Internet, when average IQ of "Internet population" was 110+, not bloody 80.

And everyone eager to explore new World, do sh¡t and learn along the way. Not compensate for IRL social isolation like nowadays.
