Great thought. Inline with this - I think the form of media changing has also changed the demographic of people who are drawn to produce it, and that reflects in the quality and ethics of the entire medium as a whole. In turn we have a society that rewards attention over the truth or what's right and wrong and only seems to continue to worsen day by day.

It's visible right there in their vocabulary:

"Reporting" is replaced with "story," so journalists no longer journal - i.e. keep a record of what events took place, but turn it into a "story." A story has to have interesting elements, so now the creative writing has to be demonstrated, with a "hook" and a "narrative."

And instead of number of subscribers, they count "eyeballs" and "clicks" and "clickthroughs."

Everyone outraged at the companies while they are simply a product of the system. The outrage should be redirected to the system itself.

There should be outrage at both, but woefully it seems only a fraction of it trancends a company label.

I think we all understand capitalism is inherently flawed. I also think this a bit more nuanced than black and white.

The biggest issue with capitalism is that it rewards the people with no moral compass with power. In a broken system like this, no change will ever come unless people start to decide to do something about it. This comes in two forms: replacing the system, and reforming the system. Both of these require influence. The more influence a person has, the more change they can enact. And let's face if, we live in a system where money can directly be converted to power and influence (see our elections and politics as a whole). To make real changes you have to play the game, and unfortunately there are a lot more evil people playing the game than good. To try to skew that ratio in the right direction a little bit is a good idea in my books.

And you do that by developing, building, and marketing, a tablet for toddlers?

I don't think any of what you say makes sense, if you think about it for even a little bit:

1. Even an individual at the top of capitalism doesn't have the right kind of influence to "replace or reform it."

2. Even if one could amass that kind of influence for that goal, the path to get there through "winning at capitalism" would probably corrupt the person before they had any influence to wield.

3. And even if you could get that high without being corrupted, there's no guarantee. Most of the people trying will end the game accomplishing nothing better slinging cancer-sticks and brain-rot for babies.

4. The actual path towards fixing it may not be an "only I can fix it" collaborationist arrogance. It could be letting it get worse and putting your efforts into highlighting those contradictions to motivate more robust collective action.

5. etc.

Seemingly not

Very enlightening comment, thank you!

They clearly just need the funding, which is few and far between on tools like this and they aren’t in a position to be able to take a moral stance. Can’t say I blame them too much other than the co-branding idea.

Tor itself was invented by the US Naval Research Lab and still today is funded >50% by the US Department of Defense.

I am like bleeding heart anti-military anti-war anti prison industrial complex and military industrial complex

I have exception for Tor (and pretty much only Tor) because of the nature of what an anonymity network is and how it functions it requires everyone to use it independent of gov, background, country etc - and the security of adversary sometimes contributes to secuirty of self - so for instance - if they have vested interest in maintaining anonymity of undercover assets in the gulf or something, it helps human rights activists also, etc

To me it's like one of those universal things - I believe humanity with the power to read and write without exception and to chose who to communicate with, independent of considerations of who is watching / reading etc is a great good. And humans will be human.

So yes some peoples backgrounds mean that is them communicating to do shady shit based in greed, or hatred etc. but it's also simultaneously the ability of person who knows about shady shit to get information to others to prevent etc.

Is Tor able to nullify the great firewall of China?

If not, that means that Tor can be crippled by any authoritarian government, and thus making sure authoritarian parties don't get into power is important.

I thought DOGE took care of that.

Ah yes, because the passionate field experts are the lazy ones cutting corners, not management.

nor the engineers? When I read the agent escaped from its box I couldn't believe monitoring didn't catch it immediately

Likely they don’t have the proper monitoring built out because management is deprioritizing it in order to move faster. I think most engineers across the industry are facing similar pressures to try to pump stock prices above all else. It’s a tale as old as the megacorp itself.

For real. It’s exhausting at this point.

So no issue hopping from new model to new model? Feel like every frontier company is doing this lol. Would be more alarming for this to not happen.

Do you use bazarr? That’s been the final fix for me with subtitles

I wasn't aware of this - thanks, I will give it a try.
