Offtopic: I only see "genius" used these days to describe an idiot. I guess this is how words change meaning over time. At some point in the future being called a "genius" will always be seen as pejorative.
That's because calling an idiot an idiot plainly is apparently considered uncouth and attracts downvotes, flags and downvotes often mean oblivion. In fact you will find do-gooders chome in with "be civil" but you flip the word and it's all kosher. The thing is all of us do and say idiotic things. So that makes a bit tricky indeed.
> in the future being called a "genius" will always be seen as pejorative.
If you are not a genius and someone calls you a genius, well, for you the future is already here, genius! (Shit I didn't really mean that :P)
There’s a lot of this in African-American vernacular. I’m not exactly sure what a “bad bitch” means but I believe it means attractive whore, but does it or does it just mean a good woman? Either way that’s two traditionally negative terms that seem to be used positively.
This comment captures the essence of why HN is largely anti AI. They feel their security and roles as software devs starting to devalue. Non coders are encroaching on their turf. A PM can do now what mid level devs did before. As AI continues to advance there will be less of a need for devs and the pool size of devs will start to shrink, as it already has. I understand the human reaction to this. It’s a hard situation to watch us being replaced by a machine. Especially after sitting at the top of the comp ranking for so many years. It’s a scary time.
The PM doesn’t have a runtime environment to test the change. No access to create a PR. Zero verification was done and I was handed a .zip file
I don’t disagree with what you’re saying, but not all cases are created equal. If the PM could create a PR that was clearly verified, like we expect out of all the SWEs, I wouldn’t have a problem.
PMs are doing demos to leadership where their change “just works”. The devs and maybe even the dev leads may protest that due diligence wasn’t done, but leadership is looking at the engineering cost center, axe in hand.
Understandable. Surprised that's not automated though. Would be worth the time to invest in that area, will save a lot of pain and time in the future. As we shift more to AI, testing is more important than ever and all of that can generally be automated.
Multiple companies I know of have internal tool websites that are the front end to the major AI companies and it has access to cut PRs so non devs are able to open PRs
Fsd is amazing. I use it daily, it completely changed my daily drive in that I don’t. All of my driving is now on fsd, I sit back and chill while the car takes me to my destination.
I really think the hate is just masked jealousy, now project managers, tpms and line managers can submit rather substantial code. That wasn’t possible before and it took away some value from devs (I say this as a dev of more than 25 years). I watch PM fix issues now instead of waiting for a dev. I understand the anger but these tools are not going away
In the early days of emulation, there were tons of low-quality and imprecise emulator backends. If you wanted to play a dozen SNES games, you usually needed a half-dozen emulators to get them all to boot to the main menu. They were disparate efforts usually led by 1 or 2 people that wanted to get a Super Famicom game to run, and then gave up on implementing or fixing support for other games.
We live in a golden age of emulation because that attitude died out. With more powerful computers (and less hack-oriented development) it became possible to properly emulate a complete console with a high level of accuracy. For preservationist purposes, accurate emulation is much more important than being the first to emulate a game, or even being able to decompile it. The only reason that we can point and laugh at low-quality efforts like Nintendo Switch Online is because the community cares even more than Nintendo did. The reason Wine/DXVK/Proton works so well is because it didn't fracture itself into a thousand downstream forks to fix one specific game. It's a holistic effort.
A lot of the hand-wringing comes from a justified place that doesn't want to see emulation backslide into a bazaar-like community. You're free to disagree with their logic and vibe-code a thousand game decomps, but in all likelihood emulation will be a more popular choice for the foreseeable future. Lots of people emulate stuff on their iPhone or Steam Deck, almost nobody is playing a game decomp on it though. I can't imagine AI tipping the scales on decomp popularity, especially among average Joes.
> The reason Wine/DXVK/Proton works so well is because it didn't fracture itself into a thousand downstream forks to fix one specific game.
Well... it sorta did, on the other hand the scope of the project is just too big for any of those forks to survive more than a few releases. There's a multitude of various Proton releases with a single-game support. The android-oriented builds are even a bigger of a mess.
I don't think that's right. I helped work on SNES9X in the early 2000s and it ran nearly everything perfectly.
Sure there were smaller emulators which didn't work well, that's understandable. But gamers didn't need more than one or two emulators to play every game that existed; you just needed to pick the right ones.
You could put an Einstein paper on a photocopier, mask the author, put your name in the place and publish. Except everyone would have thought you are an idiot.
You could clone the Linux kernel, erase all copyrights and release under Idiux. Except everyone would have thought you are an idiot.
Now that there are laundering machines financed with unlimited printed and previously stolen money a large number of developers affirms and praises the idiots.
The political posts have definitely increased and the front page is increasingly filled with negative sentiment posts that leaves one angered and not filled with a positive light. For years I didn’t flag anything. Now I’m daily flagging political posts.
> filled with negative sentiment posts that leaves one angered and not filled with a positive light
You mean the negative sentiments that you get when people uncover how big tech/monopolies/government really works ? I guess you would rather read la-la-land stories about the entrepreneurial aces of the 2010s when techies and the general populace were still gullible for that.
Negativity doesn't have to fill every space, even if you can find negativity everywhere. Maybe what HN has implicitly (and maybe explicitly) nurtured is intellectual curiosity for the sake of intellectual curiosity, which, in mi opinion es very orthogonal to negativity (even if it's intellectual adjacent).
I understand that maybe this is not what everyone wants (or understands) from HN, but I do sympathize with the other comment: after visiting HN I'd rather be happy and curious that angered and curious
Yes. That’s not what I want to read on hn. You can go to Reddit or many other places for that and fill yourself with anger all you want. I personally do not want that for me and if hn continues the way it’s headed then I’ll block it like I did Reddit.
There’s a difference between on-topic discussions relevant to the post and “discussions” that veer off into the same emotional tribal rants that we see constantly now. We try to ignore it but the constant negativity and “us vs them” is not healthy, let alone meaningful discussion.
As I'm always telling people, the phenomenon you're noticing is that the President of the United States wishes to increase negative sentiment and widen the scope of things which are subject to politics. It's not something that HN or its users get a choice in. If you don't like it, I'm with you, but you're going to have to take it up with him.
