No problem! I'm happy it got some attention since it a neat mix of tech stuff and other scientific disciplines. Thank dang too since the second chance pool saved it from discoverability limbo.

What is unclear to me is whether a special phone app is required or not. One of the web pages indicates that it piggybacks onto the infrastructure for airtags/android tags (not clear which). Certainly, if I was building these, that is what I would do as getting a custom app in enough phones would be extremely difficult.

Having said that, the claim is also that these tags report temperature as well — but there is a field (personalized name) that could be used to transport that information. In any case, it is an impressively small tracker!

An app for tracking monarchs with these tags is here for iOS [1].

Thank you - the tracker they use weighs in at 60 milligrams, incredibly light.

I've moved some of those links to the toptext. Thanks!

You can opt out at an account level. I just checked and I'm already opted out so it seems like it might be using your previous data opt out settings.

The FAQ at the bottom of the article says it'll default to off for people in the EU, the UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia, and South Korea. Are you in one of those places?

Ah thanks for the correction! And yes I'm on that list. I just heard that and was coming back to make a correction so I'm happy to hear someone got to it before me.

I'm always so conflicted about editing article titles like this for posts. I stick to original titles since that's the rules but it's tempting not to every time I see a post hit front page with good hooks edited in. These edits clearly work and rarely seem to be punished.

Wonder if HN would’ve penalized it less w/original title https://news.social-protocols.org/stats?id=50263854

I wonder what the altered chicken would look like after being cooked vs normal chicken.

I wonder if this could be applied to living tissue.

That's not a joke. Not only a cool party trick, but could help in diagnosing some medical conditions.

That was indeed the initial research target: https://www.nsf.gov/news/window-into-body-invisible-skin

It's a bit long but a clearer title might be: German police launch investigation after 2 teens allegedly grope teenage girl using remote controlled robot

That isn't even the headline for me. This is what I see:

Far-right bot accounts ‘fall silent’ as Ukraine strikes cripple Russian data centres

This is the second time today that an article on this subject was submitted to hn with an adulterated title. It's too bad too because it's an interesting subject even without the incorrect/bait titles.

Here is the other one:

That was the article title originally, the site must've changed it. Still pushing that "bot traffic" means "social media bots" though.

Ah thanks I overlooked that this time. I guess I was still feeling a little unimpressed with the previous post and that influenced my impression of this one.

they tend to change the title as they find the one that generates more clicks

I've seen some scam bots do this type of thing when challenged: Ahh, you got me. I use AI to help me write. Blah, blah...

If people are looking for more links/discussion on this subject I thought this little metafilter post did a good job linking out:

I'm really loving the little descriptions with pics included. Is there any chance we might be able to get an rss feed for these posts? I know there was mention of maybe getting on mastodon too but in this case mastodons lack of pics in their rss feeds would reduce the charm a little.
