Types are great. No nulls are great. Exhaustive switches are great. Derive macros and Serde are great. Detailed errors are great.

However Rust has one serious problem, BUILDS. It’s slow and it takes up a ton of space and memory. You will be working around this on any sizeable codebase. Using cargo check to ration your compiles, a dedicated build box, etc. Now imagine you're using it for a web application with compiled maud templates... you're potentially waiting minutes to see your changes.

If we accept that over half of the people building with rust are using agents (I'm sure this is much higher in reality), then you should also accept that there is a ton of time and resources spent on building / compiling. Optimizing this should probably be a top priority. They need someone who will be fanatical about shaving time and memory use from the build process.

Sounds like OCaml has the answer then. It has the equivalent of all the great things you described in Rust, plus compile speeds similar to or better than Go. Agents should be able to blaze through changes with it.

Sounds like I should check in on rust in a year or so.

Yeah. I'm going through an exercise right now with a large codebase where I'm split some of it up into crates so that iterating on specific parts incurs less build overhead. Literally changing my architecture... which annoyed me a bit, but it does make sense.

Murica just has a MAGA problem. We can still be friends if and when you sort that out. Us Canadians like most of you quite a lot.

API rates still aren’t quite competitive with the OpenAI x20 accounts, but they are definitely getting close with deepseek 4.1 flash. I spent a few days with only 4.1 and was very impressed.

In my very limited first test with MiMo 2.6 Flash it was much cheaper than DeepSeek 4.1 flash for a given broad task. It's at least worth a try.

I would agree, but I'm not sure I trust the "no training" policy. For DS 4.1 Flash I was able to use a US ZDR provider.

So I actually struggled with this recently (2 months ago). My "vision" was to have customers BYO agent and provide a secure MCP with an in-app (forced) approval gate for sensitive operations. But everytime I described to one of my clients, how they could bring their own ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, w/e, I got blank stares.

So now I'm building (already have done so mostly) cheap ZDR models into the application. I'm trying to build them in a way that I would want to use them, so a less "I'll be your AI today!" help bubble, but who's kidding... At least they aren't just customer pacifiers that use the help system, but actually can act on behalf of the user.

After which I'll end up building the MCP, but for power users, hopefully leveraging much of the same work. It's worth noting that MCPs have way too much friction still. It's gotten a lot easier recently (very recently) to bring your own custom MCP with Claude, but ChatGPT is more work, and restrictive (specific account types or submitted MCP apps) for the end user and I don't even know what Google wants at this point... It's a bit messy. IMO they are all dropping the ball (except Claude, which has taken the best approach).

I think we might be in this interim state that requires us to build ALL of the UIs, to address ALL of the users (Human responsively and Clankers), and it's a bit painful. If I was "the user" myself, then I would just want a CLI w/ OAUTH with clear documentation, that an agent could use (how is this worse than MCP?). But I'm not my own customer. That being said... I probably WILL build this version to scratch my own itch and bet on the future.

> if it doesn't want to leave.

This is where the lawyers find the loophole to get the cat out of the bag.

Turns out, there was a hole in the bag.

That's how bags work

That was originally meant for a carry loop, but alas.

> I believe people are getting sick of every interaction being monetized and are finally seeking out spaces where you can learn and interact with others without that threat.

Shhh... you're going to get libraries monetized.

Luna is great but makes a lot of mistakes at high and lower in my experience (large rust codebase). I use Luna Max for asynchronous subagent reviews and am very happy with its work, but it’s slow af.

I’ve been very pleased with DS 4.1 flash. Not so much the 4.0 models, but for coding (Rust) it’s been great so far (3 solid days of work).

I’ll give Mimo a try.

MiMo is my backup whenever DeepSeek is down, had the price bump, is slow, etc.

UltraSpeed was absolutely awesome. I miss it.

DS 4.1 Flash is amazing. Well worth the extra cost.

> The "Bernie bro" to MAGA pipeline is very real, as was the "I wanna make sexist or racist jokes" to Alt-Right pipeline.

It would have been so easy for the Democrats to embrace economics and labour over culture war and scolding. To push for getting money out of politics (Citizen's United). They could have kept the Bernie crowd, Gen Z men, and maybe even Rogan (that guy went from left of centre to right of right so quick though... there's more to it for sure).

Losing in 2024 was insane though and it still feels like the Democrats might screw it up again. FFS people scolding South Park...

> even Rogan (that guy went from left of centre to right of right so quick though... there's more to it for sure).

The right has owned the talk radio space for ever now. I'm rolling podcasts into that as well. I'm not familiar with many left talking heads, but I can name off many from the right. I'd suspect that Rogan noticed where the audience was and adjust programming based on that.

Positions that were mainstream in the Democratic Party 10-15 years ago are now being labeled as far right. There are a lot of normal people who haven’t changed their politics very much, but were left behind by the Democratic Party. The right happily scooped them up, as they had nowhere else to go. I think Rogan, and much of his audience fall into this camp.

Do you have any examples of such positions?

Illegal immigration. Preventing it, and correcting lax enforcement of the past is now labeled a maga issue, with democratic cities actively trying to work against ICE and people who support the left protesting against it.

Here is a short clip of Obama, Hillary, and Bill Clinton supporting deporting illegal aliens, especially those who have broken laws. If they said this stuff today they’d be called maga.

You're taking a small slice of left progressives and applying it to all democrats to try and push this "the left are all commies" narrative. ICE is running around like the gestapo in targeted blue cities, so of course it's an issue. If they were doing this in red cities (where the crime actually is), there'd be the same push back. It's obvious that republicans are intentionally trying to create issues and division using every tool at their disposal. There won't be enough leopards for all of these faces.

Subsidizing unionized EV and Battery manufacturing jobs in deep red states [0], expanding tax credits and subsidizes for the bottom 50% of Americans [1], expanding Medicaid access [2], and other tangible pocketbook benefits showed that a portion of American voters do not care about their pocketbook, and would rather vote based on culture war topics.

And you aren't even American based on your very obvious commonwealth spelling. Butt out of our political commentary.

Don't be ridiculous. I'd love it if I didn't have to care about US politics, except it has infected the rest of the world. Telling someone to butt out when your dear leader is invading other countries, intentionally influencing foreign elections (Vance stumping for the AfD), and claiming others are 51st states, etc. I also have friends and family in the US that only ever want to talk politics these days.

For the record, I think Biden deserves kudos for pursuing a far more progressive and labour oriented strategy than people expected. The Bernie Bro's soured on Democrats in the 2016 elections. I'm not sure they were a real problem in 2024.
