You are unlike most people. Most people just want to come home and watch TV. Historically it used to be cable, now it's YouTube or similar. What do you think is the quickest way to watch YouTube?

Definitely not with a TV remote vs a keyboard/mouse.

> What do you think is the quickest way to watch YouTube?

Shout "six seven" and look over the shoulder of the twelve-year-old who magically appears?

Chat GPT output; do take with a grain of salt.

TX generated 4x the absolute solar electricity as Sweden and 5x per person in the last 12 months.

What was the purpose of this comment? It's obviously irrelevant, as it's only considering one type of low-carbon electricity.

I'll take it with the whole shaker, because Texas has over 30 million residents to Sweden's 10, which means at least one of the above numbers is completely wrong.

... and shows why you still need to know things in order to safely use LLMs. If I hadn't known the approximate populations of both Texas and Sweden, I would have been more likely to believe the parent comment without question.

When the state is a full 30 degrees of latitude southern than Sweden, with consistent sun throughout the year, yeah, it will generate more energy through solar.

What's the point you're making?

Parent had a sarcastic reaction to Texas burning fossil fuels - which they have a lot of. They also have sunshine. Sweden seems to have neither but has hydro.

Point is each geographic entity is maximizing their resources. And they have every right to without outside interference.

> Point is each geographic entity is maximizing their resources. And they have every right to without outside interference.

Not really when they create a global problem. Tragedy of the commons, huh...

> And they have every right to without outside interference

The C02 output is interfering with life outside their borders.

For the same reason people buy shiny new cars, bikes, keyboards....you name it. The novelty and sometimes bragging rights in the circles they inhabit.

Yea I think that's about as far as the usefulness goes for personal use

It's how things were always done. The content from broadcasters has/had audio watermarks...frequencies which humans can't hear.

As far as I know, watermarks never took off because the technical complexity and lack of standardization. Nielsen researched and developed ACR technology but it never required watermarks.

When Nielsen first started collecting data (1950s), they handed out diaries to a group of around 5 000 selected households. Nielsen would then collect these diaries and extrapolate viewing patterns across the entire population.

After that came phone surveys. Next step (1980s) was the "people meter", a small box attached to the TV that could automatically detect which channel was tuned and which household members were in the room.

In the 1990s the set-top box made all of that redundant as the cable and satellite providers could directly see which channel every single box was tuned to at all times.

Broadcasters: the cutting edge of streaming information is ours! Now let's make it so everyone unknowingly broadcasts as much info back to us as possible!

Poor Farnsworth. He just wanted edutainment, man.

I have a friend who got a Nielson device recently and they were told it relies on watermarks. Their website says a combination is used: https://www.nielsen.com/insights/2023/how-to-measure-tv-audi...

A long time ago (~1998) I did some consulting for VEIL and Neilson was definitely talking to them...

Both audio (sports) and video (netflix et al) watermarks are alive and well. They are used to trace piracy (ie account ID), not for content ID (at least AFAIK).

To be fair - no one is suggesting the gunslinger shouldn't go to jail or worse. It's using that crime as an excuse to take other people's guns away.

In this example, the equivalent would be everyone gets their AI models banned vs. putting the perpetrator of this fraud in jail.

It wasn't me. It was the car. The car ran over and killed the guy! Not me!

We have regulations and requirements and licences and insurance in most of the civilized world for dangerous stuff that is intended for public use. Maybe AI should also have some of that.

> It wasn't me. It was the car. The car ran over and killed the guy! Not me!

I know you were referencing AI, but this problem predates AI by decades.

Go open up any news website, newspaper, or turn on the TV.

"Man struck by speeding car and killed"

"Vehicle plows into pizza shop"

"Truck takes out telephone pole"

...and these days even bystanders will blur plates in the photos they post. The police won't release any info about the driver, the news won't either.

Listen to friends, family, coworkers talk.

"I can't believe that car just ran that red light!" "The other day I was almost hit by a car in the crosswalk." "All those cars honking their horns late at night are keeping me awake."

Etc.

Once you see it, you can't unsee just how thoroughly the auto industry has managed to transfer perception of responsibility from the operator to the object.

What I have seen is the industry transferring the responsibility from themselves to the object and/or the operator.

See the last years of the industry constructing bigger and bigger tank-ish SUVs and pickups, the more aggressive the better.

One of these days, they will start putting stuff copied from Carmageddom, and then fake surprise as someone causes a carnage in a road rage incident.

Good thing that Chevron is no longer the law of the land right? So courts can review the law without regard to what the EPA says.

For enough income, maxing out 401K is the one way to reduce taxes and keep your money.

When young and lower income (lower tax rate) the best deal is to max out Roth 401k and Roth IRA if you can. Then you'll have a lifetime of tax-free appreciation.

We need an updated version of this:

A symptom of the larger problem to want to divest and outsource everything not considered a "core competence". Hence the outsourcing of everything from housekeeping to IT
