Already had one call from a scammer AI voice that was pretending to be the official billing dept. of my phone company's larger carrier. Was pretty realistic and beleivable as a human voice, but the very moment i hesitated when asked to provide information.. "you should have that information" i started to say but the agent cut the call at the point between my first and second syllable. The caller ID was already suspect, and when I checked that number it is associated to a sex line. But the voice was polite and official sounding...it wasn't the voice that twigged my suspiciousness. Granny is going to have to start requiring everything via registered mail to not get scammed.

Thank you for that trip back into a very dark corner of my memory. I had almost forgotten the whole circus of it all; right about then i was working in the hardware 'nearly true RNG' and had this whole can of worms happen right in the middle of an otherwise working setup. What fun.

That's as clear an explanation about the situation as I have ever read. I don't know the occasion to need to explain it to anyone else will arise, but when it does... or I may use it as example of the consequences of shallow communication when serious outcomes may arise. (Ill be sure to credit the source 'tialaramex' on HN)

In terms of consequences of shallow communications, try Red15: https://youtu.be/_GPZhlYusrg

Train driver and signaller both believe they've reached the same understanding of the situation, but their understanding actually remains divergent, and the driver (plus a MOM) nearly gets killed as a result.

this pretty much exists. thats where the malformed plate info generated by Fluck gets input and results in drivers of partial match plates 4 to 6 states from the away getting pulled out of cars at gunpoint. registration is just a different dataset in the same system. 20+ years ago most PD dispatches had a terminal dedicated to out of state registration lookups... today its in the patrol car.

I couldnt not put this here. I have people skills.

most industrial use robotics is actually this. from the pick and place in electronics and pharmaceuticals to weld and assembly for mechanical. the 'humanoid' robotics ideals are part of the same grift idealogy that pushes replacement of people in all kinds of roles. We are also not going to colonise the moon in the next decade either. Same reason, it a billionare pipe dream that doesnt conform to practical physics.

When do you want to colonize the moon then?

> Someone should not weigh 275 on SNAP.

Does SNAP need a better system to provide healthy food? yes.

Should employers be required to provide sufficient earnings such that employees do not require SNAP? Also, yes.

Is blaming employees who are on SNAP due to Walmart overhiring and cutting hours of at the threshold where the earnings would cross into full time with federally regulated benefits in order to pass the cost of operations to the public acceptable via absurd reductive reasoning a bald case of blaming the victims? Yes.

I'm not sure whether you are pretending that Walmart's practices are acceptable, due to a willful disregard for the complexity of the larger systemic failures that permit corporate abuse, or due to simple ignorance.

I'm not sure which looks worse, but neither makes you seem compassionate. Though the fat shaming does make you look like an ass.

>Does SNAP need a better system to provide healthy food? yes.

Yes, SNAP absolutely should not enable unhealthy consumption, especially because the majority of those diseases of affluence just hit taxpayers again via Medicaid spending.

>Should employers be required to provide sufficient earnings such that employees do not require SNAP? Also, yes.

The thrifty food plan from the USDA puts weekly food costs at about $75 for a man and about $60 for a woman. Walmart's company wide minimum pay is $14 per hour. Minus a bit for taxes, add a bit back for EITC/other tax credits, and you are covering a week of food in less than 8 hours of work. They have sufficient earnings. They choose to spend the earnings elsewhere because taxpayers are subsidizing their food.

>Is blaming employees who are on SNAP due to Walmart overhiring and cutting hours of at the threshold where the earnings would cross into full time with federally regulated benefits in order to pass the cost of operations to the public acceptable via absurd reductive reasoning a bald case of blaming the victims? Walmart is under no obligation to hire them as full time employees. They are free to accept a different job, negotiate a contract for full time employment, etc. They aren't a "victim" because the job they accepted doesn't meet every one of your standards. They are assumably mentally competent adults who made their own decisions and are free to make different decisions at any time.

>I'm not sure whether you are pretending that Walmart's practices are acceptable, due to a willful disregard for the complexity of the larger systemic failures that permit corporate abuse, or due to simple ignorance.

Walmart's practices are acceptable. It's incredible to think that a job offering double the federal minimum wage (or more), in a reasonably safe, air conditioned environment, along with retirement matching, employee discounts, and even paid tuition/books is somehow corporate abuse.

How much do you think stocking a shelf is worth?

Oh no, will they have to eat their hurt feelings?

Lol. Flashback to me having this exact conversation with a new Gaijin-kun アメリカの人 at about his second or third month in Tohoku...32 years ago. "They could just do it all in Romaji and save so much work." and even today some of my Japanese friends joke with me about how hard 漢字 can be, they laugh because they know its hard for them and admit they wouldnt do it if they had been born anywhere else.

So, it is absolutely baked in and kanji first. without kanji the following tongue twister is indecipherable.

Niwaniwaniwatori ga, uraniwanimoniwaniwatoriga iru.

庭には二羽鶏が、裏庭にも二羽鶏がいる。

I made a variant of this one myself:

中庭の中には、鶏の二羽がワニにお世話になりました。〜と、誰かに岩の上で言われた。

Thank you, thats a fun one. I particularly like the play on niwa and wani.

As for the other premise that modifying the phonetics to accomplish a simplification is based on a narrow view of the reason for retaining kanji literacy... there are important and substantive records for business, legal, and actively functional culture which exist in kanji and require kanji literacy to maintain agreement in society that is one of the differences between Japan and most other places. Who else still operates on contractual obligations from written records of the 17th century? Many current farming leases for large parts of the country are backed with the actual stamped, brush stroke written land records from then, stored at the prefecture on the original papers. Losing the ability to read and write kanji would be detrimental to ongoing cultural stability, and so it will not and should not be entertained by anyone living in that system. People living in a 'for now' mindset are irrelevant to actuality.

i briefly lived in a house that had second floor laundry with no tray or floor drain. the first day after installing a new washing machine it flooded and did over 30k damage to carpet, drywall, and installed electrical. Insurance would not cover installing a floor drain or tray, and the owner chose to let that decision stand.

truly bizarre

lol.

the only robberies that get 'attribution' are cases where the criminals get caught. i.e. low hanging fruit and thus these statistics skew to opportunistic events.

however, unplanned opportunistic crime makes for good promotional sales of window bars and strong locks. just like safes with electronic keypads.

very few such devices will stop a premeditated theft... and what is the rate of recovery for stolen goods in most jurisdictions?
