This may be a situation where revealing a solution may end up harming it. For those who use iOS and other Apple OSes, I learned of this recently released free Safari extension called Litterbox that allows looking at one post on x.com.

People really need to just not visit it. You don’t need to browse Twitter to be on top of current events. Anything posted there will be available elsewhere within minutes (and hopefully it will have been vetted somewhat)

Who uses twitter for current events? I’m there for extremely niche hobby related posts.

Curious, what is the hobby?

Unfortunately not a luxury for all events.

Some organizations only post information on Twitter, especially those with limited resources. And if their followers are themselves limited in number, then that information is not disseminated.

For example, the Dutch Air Force is currently posting updates on their ongoing airborne exercise exclusively on Twitter: https://www.defensie.nl/onderwerpen/f/falcon-leap

Do you need updates about the Dutch Air Force's ongoing airborne exercise or can you just ignore that exercise? If they weren't posting it on Twitter but were only performing it for a live audience, would you clamor to be part of that audience? Or are you only interested because of the fact it's on Twitter?

It's the daily schedule I want. The exercise lasts 12 days and has a variable daily schedule that is posted day-of exclusively on Twitter. I have no interest in Twitter; I just want to know what time they'll fly by.

Yeah as long as the audience is there, people will keep posting on Twitter.

Anything posted there won't be elsewhere in minutes, maybe not ever. I'd probably use Twitter if I cared a lot about current events.

given that twitter is claiming ownership over the content, I expect they will start posting takedowns when a government official say, posts the notice to both twitter and bluesky

[flagged]

I don't use twitter but it feels like a platform for bothering terminally-online celebrities

With alternatives available:

- bluesky - mastodon

Why does anybody (that’s not some right wing, white Christian nationalist nut job) still use twitter?

> Why does anybody... still use twitter?

Because not everybody thinks the same as you?

People are entitled to their own opinions, just because you think something is wrong doesnt make it objectively wrong.

Yes, you want a space only for those who think the same as Elon Musk, with his thumb being pressed down on the algorithm which you have no choice but to use.

On Bluesky/ATProto, I am free to chose my own algorithm or my own client software and affiliate with the people I want to. My data is always my own because I can host it on my own PDS. On Mastodon, I have similar freedoms, and you can opt into bridging ATProto with ActivityPub through Bridgy Fed. I like the freedom of the open web, but I guess not everybody thinks the same as me.

Inertia, friend groups, and also a lot of countries other than the US that have no idea about US politics or don't care enough about it.

Meta would have a field day with this change, since it was the company that was most upset and angry when ATT was introduced.

Considering that ATT was about sharing an identifier to “track across other companies' apps and websites” (text definition of the ATT setting), I don’t believe this ruling is a good move for anyone on informed consent or privacy. In the name of improving competition, sometimes regulators may end up making things worse for users.

Meta, the same company that used to play silent audio so it wouldn't be killed in the background? I'm not super worried about them being upset about privacy laws changing.

Could you provide a reference about them playing silent audio? I was curious and searched for it but wasn't able to find anything.

There are arguments about how Apple has too much power and we need better app stores and anecdotes about I-built-an-app-it-was-a-nightmare

...but Meta is exactly the reason why IMO it's needed. Because of people like Zuckerberg who treat the internet and people's phones like his personal plaything. No granularity. Contacts uploaded whenever anyone does the slightest thing

My use of Reddit also drastically reduced after Apollo stopped working (I didn’t follow the instructions that many others have been to sideload the app, configure with an API token, etc.).

But I found a couple of ways to browse without using the official app. One is Safari, with the free SinkIt for Reddit extension, and another is a free app called Lurker. The Lurker app is nowhere close to the speed and smoothness of Apollo. It also seems to drain the battery quicker, but the UI is relatively clean.
