Yeah, I currently have 4 Macs.

Apple 2020 Mini - Sequoia - Music/DAW

Intel 2017 MBP - Sequoia (OCLP) - Software Development

Intel 2014 MBP - Sequoia (OCLP) - Board game tutorials and videos at the gaming table (dining room)

Intel 2012 Mini - High Sierra - Very retro video gaming (doesn't access the net)

Since I can't afford to buy anything anymore, I'm keeping these the way they are for a long time. As each one dies, so does my enjoyment of computing.

Yeah, I am quite sad that I am packing up and shipping off my nifty little Intel MacBook Pro and for the first time ever, I'm wondering if I can do without a Mac, not even really wanting one.... the one form factor which sort of appeals is a Wacom Movink 13 w/ a Mac Mini (but I hate that the screen is so low resolution and none of the Cintiq Pros use the same stylus as my other stylus devices (Kindle Coloursoft, Samsung Galaxy Note and Book)

I was literally not aware of this. I don't know if I'm going to be coming back to this site anymore. I've got some thinking to do. I am so ridiculously anti-Flock that I am not willing to discuss it, because it would be a pointless conversation.

I understand what you mean but I do not think the answer is to disengage. They will not stop. HN is an amazing place with brilliant people. I have been wrong so many times here and I own it; the amazing thing is the grace I have been shown, the support and all of the ways the community here has made me a better, more knowledgable person.

HN is not an amazing place with brilliant people.

It's an echo chamber full of self-important piles of dogshit.

The real world is amazing... but this is a place for self-centered douche canoes like yourself to masturbate to your own imagined greatness. It's a place for assholes. It's a place for people whose fathers fucked up badly.

> It's a place for assholes

Sounds like you're contributing to your own narrative here. The only self-centered douche canoe of a comment I see in this thread is from you.

HN has its share of good & bad, but I've generally enjoyed talking to some of the people on this site; much more than sites like Reddit which imo fit your description much much better.

Also.... who hurt you?

> Sounds like you're contributing to your own narrative here.

This is a great example.

It's such an HN way to call me an asshole without saying the word directly... it's a weird autistic vernacular.

And stupid semantic bullshit like that is why normal people hate all of you pathetic little cunts.

You're all such fucking assholes. But you all want to pretend you're something more and better... but you really aren't.

I'm something you will never be: honest. And I have something you will never have: integrity.

But enjoy wanking off and pretending you're something more than what you are.

Unfortunately the signal to noise ratio has become too much work than worth.

New people who come here as novices now are given horribly bad to wrong advice constantly and even technically wrong examinations. And beyond that, now the same larping types here downvote real expertise.

It’s normal for forums so I can’t complain too much, but be aware as nice as this place is, it’s wildly uninformed.

Executive Protection Agency

Reddit does this. Every keystroke you type into a comment box is sent back to them. So, that means even if you decided to cancel posting something, they still receive what you wrote. I have been known to write responses that were harsh and angry, and I simply don't send. Sometimes it's therapy for me to think through something while typing whatever is in my head. Then I go back and edit once I have have thought it through. I don't want that info sent back. So, I tend to not involve myself with much online anymore. I don't want to expose myself to the thought police.

I find the browser the most unsafe piece of tech deployed.

Ever since I learned about full story / datadog RUM I've been writing my replies in a notes app then copy and pasting back in the browser

Yeah, it's infuriating.

I remember that good feeling when getting a new windows 9x machine up and running or installing a new video card, updating the graphics driver to get the display into 16M colors, and enjoying the darker teal. The color itself felt like an upgrade. When that brighter teal appeared you knew you didn't have the driver set, even before seeing any icons.

Man, I wish I could have the 90s back. I absolutely despise where we went with tech in the past decade. I suppose that's a me problem.

I'm with you, the 90s were cool, especially early computing days when things were equally quirky and equally magical.

On that graphics drivers note, I recall some video drivers were just so bad back then you might not get the full colors or resolution depending on your setup. Or some games might just look weird. But there was a cool thirdparty driver called UniVBE from SciTech[1] that you could install for almost any card and suddenly everything looked and worked so much more better, it was like magic. It was one of the go-to utilities I'd always carry around with me in my bag of floppy disks, full of unique, wonderous tools that the world has probably forgotten by now.

Hey, I know that sound. Hah!

I agree. I think it's an escape hatch phrase for people to try to avoid criticism. A.I. tooling is so similar to a highly addictive drug. Users think they can control how much they use, they eventually start using so much, and eventually use the signs as any addict who cannot think for themself any longer. "I can stop using it any time. I'm not addicted. You don't know me!" It's denial at its finest. Nothing worse than somebody be believing that they're an expert at something, and again they know nothing. A.I. Should simply be deemed the Dunning-Kruger drug.

Because someone commenting leads to others spending time and effort responding. Deleting the comment breaks the chain. Don't comment if you feel that it's something you might want to delete. Think of commenting as like sending an email, but you get a short window to delete in this place.

Do you believe the same about search results not being able to be deleted? I also assume this means you disagree with gdpr?

Do you not see the difference between a person volunteering to broadcast a post, vs a bird party scraping the web to index it for searching?

You believe volunteered information must stay on internet forever?

If you knew those were the conditions when you joined? Yes.

Ok. Luckily people who make the rules don’t have such ideas.

GDPR doesn't require that a participant on a discussion forum be able to erase their entire history. Article 17(3) covers this. It is reasonable for a user to ask that their posts be anonymized.

You might want to check again, the people who run this forum certainly do, and no aspect of any existing US or EU law does either. Remember your personal interpretations and feelings are just that, they aren't the law or the rules of the places you choose to participate in.

Exactly. People buy those automated circular floor vacuums. Anyone can get it done with a regular broom/vacuum in a small fraction of the time it takes for those things. Just like I drive an electric car. It charges while I sleep. It doesn't matter if an ICE can fuel in a few minutes.
