Do we need to make the rich richer or allow locals affordability?

Me buying food from restaurant would make the owner richer, but would also employ more people at the restaurant.

The scarcity issue is valid when the resource is limited. In case of US, I was not aware of food scarcity. Even housing is more due to policies than actual land scarcity.

Economic activity does have positive feeback. Yes, some people get unfairly rich - but the solution is not to stop the activity, instead try to get the rich pay their fair share of contribution to the country.

Why are we relegating locals to menial restaurant jobs? Why not have programs to get them trained and into higher earning jobs?

A local working a restaurant will often need to take advantage of welfare. If instead we funneled the locals to higher paying jobs, we would be better off. We're supposed to look after our own citizens, afterall --that's the whole point of electing a government.

> Me buying food from restaurant would make the owner richer, but would also employ more people at the restaurant

What of one of the employees at the restaurant had your job, and they bought food there? Or are you declaring only you can do your job?

What’s the proportion of local crime syndicates having local roots vs Eastern European roots? Is it even or is it lopsided? I really don’t know but have them impression it’s anglos but also lots from other parts of Europe.

Criminals come in all ways, shapes and forms. Street thugs are just one type of criminal.

But also maybe they got there by paying and lobbying previous admins to the detriment of the local workforce (though likely good fiscally for the orgs taking advantage of the program).

It is completely possible this is a legitimate issue, but the current administration has been so corrupt about everything else it is impossible to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Even if the claim is valid I’m sure the enforcement is targeted.

You think they’d go after palintir or spacex for the same issues?

My impression is that those companies might have many jobs requiring at least US citizenship or security clearances.

There is a likelihood of some targeting though this isn’t the only admin to do that. Remember when the IRS was directed to audit conservative organizations (you know maybe they had a higher likely hood of fraud, maybe, but that was not proven)

That said, it seems this is targeting body farms. Firms that specialize in corrupting the process. Yes some people they bring over have unique talents, but a lot of them are run of the mill folks looking to become “manager” so they can attract a mate back home.

> Remember when the IRS was directed to audit conservative organizations

It was directed to audit them less, because they were complaining about being audited as much as other organizations. Yet another case where conservatives make themselves victims out of nowhere, to get preferential treatment and then continue pretend they were victims after proven wrong.

Louis Lerner later apologized for subjecting the orgs to overscrutiny.

Generally apologizing to people with persecution fetishes is unhelpful. He shouldn't have apologized.

He admitted that the majority of the targeted auditing was against conservative orgs while also targeting a minority of liberal orgs. He admitted to the targeting and also that it greatly focused on conservative orgs.

I'm not against going after fraud, but you have to be even handed about it.

You can read NPR's take. They admit they targeted conservative groups but also had progressive bycatch.

https://www.npr.org/2017/10/05/555975207/as-irs-targeted-tea...

But did he admit it was because they were conservative or because they were committing more fraud?

I can't see any quotes there except claims of keyword searches. I haven't yet read the pdf.

If its true that it was based on keyword searches, then I would hope a future government gets the balls to do the same for the current Trump admin's keyword based banning/removal shenanigans.

There was no wrongdoing on his part. Only conservatives, as usually, feel like being persecuted when they cant defraud freely.

Which is why they created the most corrupt admin in history.

yes see last weeks of previous president and number of pardons there.

Piracy is more “I don’t like the terms you’ve set.” Some terms are overbearing. Some are more reasonable. Both get pirated but at different rates. Some people just don’t like the idea of paying at all. Some people will pay onerous terms.

> Both get pirated but at different rates.

Gabes point is thay the balance of the two is overwhelmingly; yes some pirates will always pirate. Most win prefer to buy the game if the terms are reasonable. Being smart enough to undetstand this and run his business accordingly is why Gabe owns yachts.

I dunno.

That's kind of like saying places that suffer from dine-and-dashers suffer from a service problem. I disagree.

Some services can sustain subsidization. Google can "give out" GMail, people will be happy to have the service for "free". Smaller players who can't subsidize their service(s) with ad platforms may have to either charge money or offer fewer features and recoup revenue via features.

Gabe has the breadth and resources to practice his economics -many others do too; however, many smaller or more focused players don't have that liberty. Obviously we have companies who go to extremes to ruthlessly extract as much as they can from their customers. They are obviously deserving of criticism --but not everyone who wants can play by Gabe's philosophy.

These days City + Person means someone living in such city. They don’t say “from + place” because that implies origin which they try to avoid these days.

Pretty stupid to assume familiarity with random suburbs though, unless writing in a local newspaper.

I interpret Webster Man to imply origin even more strongly than "from Webster". The noun phrasing implies long term stability, objects don't change from one noun to another noun when they change locations.

Also in Europe more cops have K-9s and aren’t afraid to sick them on suspects.

Sure but that means November will have no impact on what CPB does. It’s always happened and will continue to happen just like stock trading with insider information by congress members will continue to happen regardless of November results. The vote came up and it was voted down and I don’t see that changing. I don’t see the spying on citizens changing. The NSA spied on Congress and they did nothing about it.

It’s disingenuous to imply that November will have an effect on either of those topics.

Actually and very obviously, what's happening now is new and worse.

My math teacher used to say that “obviously” means “I don’t know how to prove” and “trivially” means “tenuously at best”. Thanks for the demo of this in action.

It’s been a thing since 1789: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Border_search_exception

Enough alarm bells are ringing to suggest that this is not normal. The persecution of political enemies isn't even a veiled threat, they are spoken outright in public.

Right like the ~400 subpoenas on Republican lawmakers by Jack S with the tenuous linkage to the Jan riot. You might have reason to subpoena 10 or even 30 lawmakers who may have had some linkage but going after ~400 seems dubious.

An event like the Jan 6th putsch attempt would, in pretty much every democracy that has got some sense of self-preservation, result in at the very least intense public hearings, and outside of the European Union that bans the death penalty under all circumstances, followed by the chief perpetrators getting strung up at the same gallows they brought to hang Mike Pence off of.

The fact that barely any consequences came for those instigating the putsch, except a few of those dumb enough to do stuff like parade around in front of cameras, is completely inexcusable.

The brought a mock up of a gallows -the same kind other protesters bring to anti-Trump rallies. Should we punish people who went into the Congressional buildings? Yes! (Keep in mind we have hosted protests in Congress too) Do they need to subpoena ~400 lawmakers and $10 donors to the campaign? I think it’s obvious that that is overreach and intimidation.

> The brought a mock up of a gallows -the same kind other protesters bring to anti-Trump rallies.

I'm not aware of this being a widespread practice at anti-Trump rallies.

> Do they need to subpoena ~400 lawmakers and $10 donors to the campaign? I think it’s obvious that that is overreach and intimidation.

Well... it's not unlikely that there might have been "inside help" from lawmakers and/or their staff or even general Congressional staff. The purpose of an investigation is to go, dig deep and fully take apart whatever conspiracy there was.

As for the donors - anti-terrorist laws in pretty much every country don't care if it was just a $10 donation. Donate to a cause that ends up being terrorists, be labeled as a terrorism supporter.

the gallows mockup was one of the reasons for the reaction to the Jan 6th stuff.[0] , although as far as what political party the owning group is using it for or against is sort of up for grabs.

Rioting is not terrorism. Terrorism usually involves conspiracy and planning they're typically not one-time, ad-hoc events. I know governments all over the world like to go overboard with that terms since Sep 11 because it's a get-them for free kind of card, but to me it means actual infliction of terror. A mock gallows is not. If it were, lots of protests with burning effigies, etc. could quite possibly be considered terroristic events.

The biggest mistake of Joe Biden's life was not making sure that Trump was in handcuffs on the afternoon of January 20th, 2021.

Subpoenas are an investigating tool. It's part of gathering the data. I think you may be confused. It's not in any way a punishment.

Do you think at that point he had it out for Republicans in general? Republican congressmen were appalled by what happened on Jan 6th, and it was only because they thought Trump would just go away that he wasn't convicted in the Senate.

Trying to frame that investigation as some sort of political witch hunt is ridiculous.

The above is only true if you reinterpret what the poster said.

All the text and so on had unrealized potential. Without Anthropic et al it would remain unrealized.

It’s like FTL. Until someone realizes it, it’s just talk.

At the height of the cold war, we had Russians in the US and it's not as though people went after them with pitchforks. We also had people like Bernie (not just him) visit the USSR and most weren't thrown in jail -some were, obviously, but the great majority were not. So I don't think that's exceptional because there is usually a defined context for hostile action to take place. Even when you have sworn enemies who have plotted against a nation (or similar entity), it's not like they immediately go on to execute their plan. They set a target and go after that --often times you get accounts of that person being at most detached but often "they seemed friendly, I never imagined..." Basically if you don't get in the way of their plans, there is no reason to have you as collateral as you are not significant to their goal.
