My friends and I have been asking this exact question lately. I’m sure people are still working on interesting things that AREN’T AI. I too would love a HN-minus-AI.
I've always thought it a bizarre and unusual "requirement" that swap gets an entire partition. Windows has it as a file too. At least with this approach, if you change the amount of RAM in your computer, you don't need to go resize the swap partition if you want them to match.
That doesn't match my experience at all. I had a Foregjo instance on a Raspberry Pi, and maybe it's typical SD card issues, but the number of times that Forgejo has crashed because it locked its own database and couldn't continue and the number of times repos I mirror from GitHub just mysteriously stop syncing is quite probably the same number of times GitHub has been down this year.
Bruh sorry, stop running any RW services off an SD card, it has always been terrible and unfortunately it will remain terrible, you can buy a used SFF with >5x the compute and a sata ssd for the same price as a raspberry pi alternatively put an nvme hat on it
I started using computers in the era where customisation and user preferences were “allowed” by software companies. Think the Windows 98 or even Windows 7 theme dialog vs modern Windows. I personally reject this seemingly forced binary choice of light and dark.
Because of this for my site I have four themes, light, summer sunshine, forest, and dark. I’ve seen some sites where the theme is an RGB colour picker even.
In regards to the article, that’s a lot of consternation and frustrating statements about toggles and tri-state toggles. A simple button with a dynamic icon works well as soon as you want to cycle through more than two choices.
I don't understand the premise, is this saying short form posts (dare I call them Tweets) on Bluesky are somehow a replacement for long form blog posts?
No. atproto (which is what bluesky is based on) supports all kinds of public media - for instance https://standard.site/ which is designed for longer form static content.
You can choose where your PDS runs and the ecosystem still works. If one relay shuts down (Google Reader) or takes their API private (X, Reddit) it shouldn't matter, the PDS are separate and another relay can take over.
Worst case you can go directly to the PDS, but that wouldn't work at scale
Well this would be an improvement over my former NHS GP practice deciding the best way for me to come off antidepressants was immediately stopping them without renewing the prescription or even discussing it with me! I think they just forgot to renew the prescription.
Oof, this tracks with my experience on the NHS… it seems like extreme busyness comes off as a lack of due care.
One time I met a psychiatrist after moving to a new area. In our very first meeting he takes me off a medicine I’ve been on for nearly 7 years, cold turkey. Then? _Zero_ follow-up, no check-ins, and I can’t get an appointment on my own for months. The decision may have been wise, leaving out specifics here, but the lack of follow-up really was negligent.
I more or less just wrote "never say stuff like 'good insight' or 'you're right to push back', and avoid addressing me directly, just answer questions". I'm sure there's better ways to write it, but meh, it seems to have worked well enough
