You know what? I had fear of flying. I did a training with a pilot in a simulator, but it was in the cockpit. I don't have fear of flying in a simulator or in the cockpit. I have fear of flying as a passenger, I'm sit in a chair. That's what I would have liked during my training. I told that to Air France and they did not understand but this might seriously be useful.

Also useful for people who want to ride along with someone currently on a plane. "Honey, you are over Kansas right now!"

Useless things tend to be deeply useful to a select few.

I am loving this "re-weirding" of the internet. For the younglings, this is very much the sort of pet project that would bubble up in early internet days. No startup raising money, no pain point necessarily being solved, just one person's idea lovingly rendered to life.

Don't try to build something for everyone, build something that's everything to someone. - paraphrasing Ferry Porsche

I should have known he had views like this. I've heard similar things expressed and I believe this sentiment personally, but I'm happy to know I can add his name and the original quotation to my archives.

Or; don't be everyone's cup of tea, be someone's shot of whiskey.

UAL used to let you listen into the cockpit to ATC chatter: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17656352 — I understand this was really helpful for calming some passengers' nerves during flying.

I really appreciate it when I get a pilot that actually tells us wtf is going on.

Gave me a good chuckle.

Had a pilot last week who told us exactly how the queues work at O'Hare, and explained that we were getting moved because another pilot saw that parts of another plane's brake system were laying on the ground in the middle of the runway.

He quickly corrected himself to say "debris" instead of "brake parts" which really makes me wonder if there's a mandate to not say anything that might suggest that a plane malfunctioned.

BA (and presumably other airlines) run fear-of-flying courses where you have some ground sessions with flight crew explaining what happens during takeoff/landing, what noises you might hear, etc. Then you go up for a short flight as a passenger to sort of re-enforce what you learned earlier.

first fly to the UK to take the course...

Interesting, thanks for the idea. Would be pretty cool if this app did have some real-world applications, beyond being a bit of a meme app. Thanks for the comment!

This is going to sound insane, but something like this for the backseats of various common, and maybe even exotic, cars would be cool too.

I have similar problems being a passenger in an uber for more than 15 mins. I lose my mind on roadtrips when it's not my turn to drive.

Not at all! Cars are an extremely common trigger for anxiety. You are far from alone in this.

I don't think you can completely eliminate this as people naturally don't like giving up their agency which is usually going to produce at least a low level of anxiety.

Agency and information in a way. I actually feel safer in a tiny 4 seater plane than a jet, even though objectively that's probably backwards. Being able to look at all the parts of the plane, how the movements derive from the pilot's actions, actually see out the front, it is more reassuring. More similar to being a passenger in someone's car. It probably doesn't hurt that it is easier for my mind to imagine a Cessna gliding gently to earth than a passenger jet.

I like the idea of someone losing hundreds of millions of dollars if my plane goes down.

I’m not at ease in an airplane. I rarely fly but i actually like it, but I’m really anxious.

What helps me is always taking a seat near the wings. First that’s where the plane moves the less. And moreover, it’s pretty reassuring watching them supporting the plane in their great stability, they always move way slower than the cabin.

Plus you can alert the crew if something's off before take off (eg. loose/missing screws/panels). A forner colleague of mine did that, and got to see the entire maintenance crew come out for an impromptu RCA and incident response.

Total and complete elimination of anxiety was never the claim.

Management and reduction is enough.

I'm not afraid of the flight, for me its customs and surrendering all my data. They even want my balls ffs.

Do they contain more than 100 mg of liquid?

The rule on liquids is 100ml and I don't think it applies to semen. I object to the naked scanners, especially if kids have to be scanned. That'd be mass producing CSAM. Is TSA above the laws on producing CSAM?

It looks like everything is the same with a bit of noise. Do you feel the same while reading this "visualization"?

To me the description was very clear, the game is fun to play. Would love to see the "prediction" of a LLM in the stats after playing

Nice idea, maybe when there's enough traction for weighted scoreboards I could enter some models
