If you cannot understand how a huge increase in energy might be useful you should probably not go around calling other people stupid. We are not going to get carbon removal and desalination at scale to fix the already baked-in consequences of climate change by making our water heaters more efficient. Efficiency is good but there is more to life than the status quo.

I am aware of the need for carbon removal and (some) desalination, but 1000x-ing our energy production is ludicrous stuff. The waste heat from energy production on that scale would render Earth uninhabitable.

If you increase it 1000 fold it would still be less than 10% of the heat the sun provides.

That's incorrect. It's in the order of 25% of the heat reaching the Earth's surface, or maybe 35-40 watts of heat per square metre.

That's roughly ten times the warming effect of doubling CO2.

Now, I don't have a climate model handy to simulate this in detail but I would suggest "render the Earth uninhabitable" is a close enough approximation to the actual effects to suggest it's a terrible idea and anyone seriously proposing it should be laughed out of the room until they've done their homework.

Total energy use by mankind is about 200,000 TWh a year

https://ourworldindata.org/energy-production-consumption

Most of that is lost in waste heat.

Total energy arriving on earth from the sun is about 1,500,000,000 TWh

Old iPads are better than this in every way except for the way that matters most in a shared family device, then? I'd love for Apple to add multi-user support to iPadOS and think it's way past time they did, but it's not going to be a simple software update. This device has on-chip support for multiple FaceID accounts so it can distinguish them securely.

Apple has multi user support for iPads, but only if you’re a school.

Normal users should accept that if they let their kid play Angry Birds they’re risking an accident with all their other apps getting mucked with, and if they don’t like it they can buy five iPads.

I believe the idiomatic solution for “handing your child an iDevice but only letting them touch one app” is Guided Access mode.

It’s only when you want to let them jump in and out of multiple apps (e.g. pick what game they want to play on their own) that you start having a problem.

(And the not-idiomatic-but-people-do-it-anyway solution for that, from what I’ve seen, is buying one extra iPad, and creating a special whole-family Apple account for it, to effectively serve as a game console for the kids.)

> when you want to let them jump in and out of multiple apps (e.g. pick what game they want to play on their own)

The solution to that is Assistive Access.

It’s more painful to use than it should be, but it absolutely solves this problem.

I'm skeptical that normal users are expected to operate Guided Access. It's fairly awkward.

I think they also do this for prison iPads as well!

What do prison iPads do in general?

Run the services in jails /s

Is this sarcasm or are you one of _those_ Apple fans willing to rationalise every single issue their products have?

I'd say it's sardonic, rather than sarcastic.

Yes, that's what I was going for

Multi-user "Handoff" seems interesting as well. The implications from a lot of the descriptions is that this HomeView is designed from the perspective that every user also has a primary iPhone or iPad and HomeView coordinates data sync across a number of apps from that primary device. (Several features mention that they only work with that user's iPhone or iPad on the same Wifi network.)

the FAQ indicates this too:

> To unlock a full, personalized experience on HomeView, users need an Apple Account, a compatible iPhone or iPad, and to be added as a member of the shared home in the Home app.

Agree this should just be a dock/charger for iPads.

Though the sheer fact that in 2026 it's driven by Siri who is not a conversationalist AI, but still the same frustrating voice technology from 2011 is confusing they would even bother releasing this.

Sooner or later their lack of innovating themselves and just copying is going to make them what the Blackberry was when iPhone was released.

> Though the sheer fact that in 2026 it's driven by Siri who is not a conversationalist AI, but still the same frustrating voice technology from 2011 is confusing they would even bother releasing this.

This is no longer the case. Siri as of iOS 27 is a gemini-based LLM system. It has a chatbot app and everything.

Really? On my iPhone 15 Pro Max (older iphone) each time i want to have a complete conversation with it I have to constantly prompt it with Hey Siri then say next thing in conversation. Is that your experience?

I use and have used chatGPT voice while driving for awhile ... here's a very silly example https://www.instagram.com/p/DecaL9Gx6li/ . Besides that silly example im in school now and give chatGPT all my notes to create interact multiple choice questions i take while driving. Overall love hearing how other people are using chatGPT voice and or any other AI voice conversationalist tech.

On iOS 27 with Siri AI, yes, it's conversational, no need to continually prompt it.

Have you actually tried using the new Siri conversationally? Because I have tried and tried on my 18 Pro and it is the most frustrating experience ever. The conversation window (time wise) is extremely tiny, she's basically only able to answer a single question and there is no real follow up.

I've tried conversing with it while driving and it is just useless.

Trying to converse with it sitting down and with all the time in the world just doesn't work either.

My choices are basically: use the worst AI assistant in the world, use ChatGPT, or just google it myfuckingself. Siri will never win this one.

E: an example of a frustrating experience making it useless: I was browsing marketplace for used Mac minis and found one pretty cheap. I ask Siri, hey siri tell me about this Mac mini. It identified the model via the model number, but when I asked it for the baseline specs for that model it just kept regurgitating the information listed on the screen. The reason I was asking was because the listing didn't list the amount of RAM, so Siri was just unable to tell me, no matter how I phrased it.

Agreed especially if like me you have used chatGPT voice for awhile. Apple is so behind and Siri is so slow and times out while GPT on my iPhone works 9.5 out of 10 times. Almost 10 out of 10 when driving but while Im hiking with friends and we are talking / brining GPT into our conversations during our hikes it does lose connection (hopefully Starlink Mobile solves this in a year or few).

Unfortunately that's not what I experience.

What are your settings for Siri and which iPhone do you have?

iPhone 16 Pro Max but it's supported from the 15 Pro and up.

Right now it's only supported in English, and your phone language/locale also has to be in English. Then you go into Siri settings and make sure it doesn't say it still needs to download Siri AI.

Also it's not supported for EU users (however Apple determines that) since Apple won't follow the DMA.

It also requires that your region & language match exactly. Eg a region of UK but a language of English (US) does not work.

That phone should support Siri AI.

Not when driving and an on my 15 Pro Max I constantly have to say hey siri after each time it responds vs. conversing with chatGPT throughout much my drives. Also, Siri is super slow and I still get "Something went wrong, please try again," 4 out of 10 times.

Also, my silly video shows just how far away chatGPT voice is where you can tell it to say things using different tones of voices. Funny one I tested this evening was having it deliver that silly 8th grade english to french translation in a Titantic the movie, "I'm the king of the world," expressive tone ha.

The new Siri is more interactive but it is not designed for a social experience. It is very task focused.

That’s not true anymore.

You can have a complete conversation with Siri back and forth like you can with chatGPT without having to constantly say Hey Siri?

I use conversational voice AI while driving and with the new Siri i constantly have to use hey siri to keep the conversation going.

No I don't think they've ever tried. I have the same experience, constantly needing to say hey siri with every single sentence, and then it just isn't great at answering to the point that it's just useless. Given the choice of Siri, ChatGPT live, or just waiting until I can Google it myself, Siri is functionally useless even today.

Sure. It does depend on how you invoke it, however.

Open the Siri app, problem solved.

It’s the same chip that was used in older iPhones and iPads, I don’t think there is anything special about the chip inside this new device.

Until the past couple launches it was the ship that had the issues. Had to be blown up a couple times, failed to relight in vacuum, lost an engine and nearly failed to get to the suborbital trajectory last time. Meanwhile the booster had the most spectacular success in the catch, and has yet to result in a catastrophic failure.
