rootshell is libghostty and free, doesnt strike me as vc backed

Maybe the proposal you saw was breaking up into crates, which is Rust's compilation units and can be parallelized. They're not microservices, they're just libraries which still combine to produce a single binary.

There's a bug causing NSStatusItems in MenuBar<->WindowServer to enter a continuous redraw loop after a number of hours of uptime which pins CPU at like at least 10-20%. I filed it as FB24528844

    1. WindowServer sends the app a stream of remote-context notifications (CGSDatagramReadStream::dispatchMainQueueDatagrams -> remote_context_notify).
    2. AppKit responds by rebuilding the status-bar window's tracking areas and structural regions (_NSTrackingAreaAKManager _updateStructuralRegionCreateIfNeeded / displayCycleUpdateStructuralRegions, including NSButtonCell _hasRolloverAppearance for the menu bar rollover effect).
    3. That dirties the window, so UpdateCycle/stepTransactionFlush commits a CA::Transaction to the WindowServer.
    4. Another notification arrives and the loop repeats at display refresh rate.

Just so you know, a process pinning the CPU at 10-20% on Apple Silicon doesn't even cause any perceptible impact to multitasking. I've pinned the CPU far higher and not noticed anything like this, so it's definitely not that issue. I sometimes forget workloads are even running because the rest of the system feels so perfectly fine even when the fans are running full tilt.

This causes big pauses and stutters system-wide, which is not consistent with any level of CPU utilization alone.

do you have alerts set up for your personal site's traffic?

No, just goatcounter and it showed a spike from HN.

https://robotaxitracker.com/cameras?metric=vehicles&kind=cyb...

they have about as many unsupervised robotaxis on the road as there are waymos in austin, as spotted by an AI watching public camera feeds

The per 1k car figure makes it look like Waymo has 50% more cars or they're 50% more active than the Tesla robotaxis.

grid forming inverters : )

I don’t see many (any?) plants using them, is the technology there yet? Genuinely curious.

And on an unrelated note, it seems that hybrid power plants are becoming a talking point now and they seem to make a lot of sense. Like covering dams with solar panels saves on water, make PVs cooler/work more efficiently and you don’t need to worry about permits/building more grid connections because you can simply slow down hydro during daytime (and get along with grid following inverters just fine).

California requires all new solar installations to contribute to stabilizing the grid by helping out with regulating the voltage and frequency https://www.openintl.com/california-rule-21-interconnection/

The technology to act as inertia isn't actually hard, is it? You deliberately offset your voltage by a fraction of a millisecond and you have to handle some percent extra current.

I believe that frequency is also variable so you'd need to sample that too.

ERCOT frequencies have sagged when the grid was stressed.

Nah sadly not. It's very slow, fails to respond half the time (just decides to disappear, ot "we ran into a problem"), it's nowhere near the full duplex voice of GPT Live - Siri is still some dumb text model behind a TTS model, and does not work like modern agents which can take chains of actions for me. It's pathetic.

Yes! I had it refuse on a similar claim of legality and when challenged to say what law forbids it it proceeded. Lil bitch.

Mazda famously built the worst EV, almost on purpose it seems

https://electrek.co/2023/11/27/ceo-of-mazda-which-makes-one-...

Its been a decade of sandbagging. Fuck them https://electrek.co/2016/11/17/madza-electric-cars/

They now have the Mazda 6e, built on a Chinese platform.

Which is almost good, unfortunately, mostly because of terrible software.

You’re incorrect about Alec from technology connections. He is very aware of hooks for videos and retention is very much on his mind. His videos are well scripted, for the most part, given his niche. But the reason the videos are an hour long is BECAUSE of the algorithm rewarding long form second screen content.

Has he mentioned this somewhere we can cite?

I’m sure he’s aware of it as all creators have the tools to be aware of these sort of things, I just don’t get the impression from his content that he’s super concerned about taking that information and acting upon it.

I.e., if YouTube didn’t provide any analytics of any kind, I don’t think his content would change.

Yeah if you pay for his patreon you can read his discord where he’s mentioned it. Also I think on stage at a recent youtube convention in san mateo he mentioned he always looks for the hook. Note also the increase in video length corresponding with the platform’s algorithm changes

Can you clarify what you mean by "second screen content" here? I don't feel like I would get anything out of Alec's videos by "watching" them while really watching something else (which is how I understand that term, possibly incorrectly). Do people really do that?

Normally “second screen content” refers to something you glance at while doing your main task such as a day job (emails, etc).

Another example is Old School Runescape, which has gained a moniker of “second screen game” because a lot of the boring grindy content can be done while focusing on something else.

the main screen could be web browsing, video game, work. That screen is the primary focus. My wife watched 20-60 min yt vids during her work day on an ipad.
