is there a price or cost for happyness?

which lesson is it exactly?

Is gambling happiness? I prefer to teach my children about more enduring sources of joy.

1.) That gambling is not worth of money even if it is fun for a moment.

2.) Something being fun but expensive is skippable and it is good to be able to say "no" to expensive fun.

Yep, for all the moralizing about sports gambling people on HN do, they sure love to prime their children for it.

It also just helped me understand the value of money, which to say has served me well is a massive understatement. Plus a real understanding of the fact that there's cons dressed up as fun, not everything is as it appears. It's okay to say 'no' to high pressure sales tactics.

But, again, we simply just didn't have room in the house for junk carnival prizes from a practical perspective.

> Yep, for all the moralizing about sports gambling people on HN do, they sure love to prime their children for it.

Can't get through life without gambling at least a little bit.

Even taking out a life insurance policy is making a bet you're going to die before it expires

Although it uses the same technology as gambling, it's for a different purpose. You aren't hoping to die, you are doing risk management for your family.

what the point and usefulness of the comments above? we shouldn't be surprised? is normal to steal? hiring apple employees?

can you realize what this means?

focus on this part:

"If his account is correct, this is not a minor dispute over attribution. It would mean that unpublished human work was absorbed into a model and then presented to the world as a breakthrough by the model itself"

don't threat this as a minor dispute!

also why not nitter link? not even in comments?

> we shouldn't be surprised? is normal to steal?

Two different things. It's not normal to steal, but we shouldn't be surprised thieves steal. It's what they do.

Don’t they openly state that their product may cause IP issues but that is fine because they will take care of your legal problems caused by their product?

In the end, it’s not them stealing, it’s the AI doing stealing. What kind of moral compass are we talking about?

omg, feels like I should delete my HN account now.

as additional context regarding the topic:

"The Alternative for Germany (AfD) has been officially classified as a far-right extremist party by Germany's domestic intelligence agency, the Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz (BfV)."

"This classification is based on several factors:

Xenophobic Rhetoric: The AfD has consistently used language that disparages immigrants and minority groups.

Islamophobic Statements: The party has made numerous claims that portray Islam and Muslims as threats to German society.

Connections to Far-Right Movements: The AfD has been linked to various extremist groups and ideologies, raising concerns about its influence on democratic values."

- Björn Höcke Used a banned Nazi slogan and criticized Germany's Holocaust memorial.

- Alexander Gauland Trivialized Nazi crimes by comparing them to "bird poop" in history.

- Maximilian Krah Suggested that SS members were not automatically criminals

that doesn't directly explain why they won but for sure explains for which reason people voted them.

Interesting context.

I just discovered about the Syrian that worked in Switzerland at her home without contract, brilliant.

but not so brilliant as this one:

"On 9 January 2025, in a live broadcast with Elon Musk on X Spaces, both Weidel and Musk said that "Hitler was a communist". The classification of Hitler and the National Socialists as "left" and "socialist" is rejected by the vast majority of historical research."

wow

where could this heavy privacy infringement be reported in EU?

should we all report this illegal behaviour and contract terms?

just read about it, what a sad story, thanks for the reference.

looks like he did great stuff. for context: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_Swartz

"As a programmer, Swartz helped develop the web feed format RSS; the technical architecture for Creative Commons, an organization dedicated to creating copyright licenses; and the Python website framework web.py. Swartz helped define the syntax of the lightweight markup language format Markdown, and was a co-owner of the social news aggregation website Reddit until it was fully sold in 2006 and contributed to its development until he left the company in 2007."

the most scary part is knowing this is the fear we all have, and the one they want us to have.

> the most scary part is knowing this is the fear we all have, and the one they want us to have

Yes. It's such a terrible and oppressive feeling. I wish things were different...

I've heard he was more like the Elon Musk of the open source world. He didn't co-found Reddit, he was placed there by Y Combinator staff to the protests of its actual founders. Maybe some of the other projects he's credited for also were like that.

I've never heard anyone in the internet freedom or open source communities speak ill of him, and something tells me a 14 year old was not getting involved in writing the RSS spec to steal clout for financial gain.

what is meant with "he was placed there by Y Combinator staff to the protests of its actual founders."

I find it interesting, could you expand on that? or is there any reference?

That's a weird, uncited, and vague attack on him. Like, who GAS if he did or did not cofound Reddit (which no one here has claimed)?

also for context this is a shorter version and represents well the situation https://www.inventati.org/who/collective

"After 2005 we have been constantly pestered by prosecutors and security forces (and even by the Vatican! [4]) asking us to hand over users’ data and identities and we are proud to say we were always able to answer: we are sorry, but we do not have them."

This is tech guys supporting with infra real freedom of speech! even more important nowadays! jumping to the violent antifa narrative means ignoring a lot of important things.

Not wanting to provide free services to someone isn’t the same as not supporting free speech

[flagged]

Right. If I support free libraries, but I deny a library card to an ax-wielding serial killer, I don't really support free libraries.

Why don't you answer the actual question, instead of coming up with far-fetched analogies?

That is the actual question.

based on the fact that in the past was moved for safety and deals towards US, if it's now moved back to EU is it because it feels safer and less deal dependency?

this is a crime, looking forward when all of this is going to be really prosecuted as war crimes, the rest about their attitude we already know.

“Hamas did it too” is not an exoneration and I’m amazed so many Israelis keep mentioning “Hamas” as if it does anything more than bring IDF down to their level.

It makes both sides sound bad, but because the IDF has the support of the civilized world the standard should be a little higher. Israel is not like that though - they are very tit for tat and immature in their messaging which only makes them look worse.

Also if the war is Israel vs Hamas in Gaza it makes people wonder why they are killing Palestinians outside Gaza like in the West Bank and in the illegal Jewish settlements.

Bad look for Israel.

Of course, completely dissolving and expelling either people (Israeli or Palestinian) is not feasible with so many millions of people. So neither side will actually get their wish.

It has to be 2 states, both of which are equal members in a larger league of states perhaps in the Levant.

Need a peace-loving leader post-Netanyahu in the region to unify people and get them forward-thinking with technology and a secular revolution. Something for the people for the region to all identify with that isn’t rooted in violence and oppression.

> “Hamas did it too” is not an exoneration and I’m amazed so many Israelis keep mentioning “Hamas” as if it does anything more than bring IDF down to their level.

The IDF does not intentionally operating amongst civilians to increase collateral damage like Hamas does. I never made such a claim.

> It makes both sides sound bad, but because the IDF has the support of the civilized world the standard should be a little higher. Israel is not like that though - they are very tit for tat and immature in their messaging which only makes them look worse.

How is tit for tat immature? Is it immature when Ukraine does it to Russia? It's pretty hard to deter an enemy if one just ignores their attacks.

> Also if the war is Israel vs Hamas in Gaza it makes people wonder why they are killing Palestinians outside Gaza like in the West Bank and in the illegal Jewish settlements.

Hamas is not only in Gaza.

> It has to be 2 states

That does seem to be the most realistic option, sure. It's a long way off however.

> both of which are equal members in a larger league of states perhaps in the Levant.

I'm not really sure what you mean by this.

> Need a peace-loving leader post-Netanyahu in the region to unify people and get them forward-thinking with technology and a secular revolution.

Israel has had leaders in the past that have pushed for a two state solution, Palestinian leadership on the other hand has historically always refused to negotiate in good faith.

Israel has certainly been willing to make peace historically when there are partners for peace like there was with Sadat with Egypt.

> Something for the people for the region to all identify with that isn’t rooted in violence and oppression.

Unfortunately when Israel has tried to make peace with Palestinians things have generally not been successful. When Israel offered peace Palestinians responded with terrorism like the second intifada.

had to create new account specifically to put this comment?

> Also if the war is Israel vs Hamas in Gaza it makes people wonder why they are killing Palestinians outside Gaza like in the West Bank and in the illegal Jewish settlements.

It is not something that can be defined as war at all, the definition of war includes two states fighting each other militarily, I didnt see any state or military on the Gaza side, what I've seen is total demolition and killing of civilians on purpose.

> the definition of war includes two states fighting each other militarily

No, that's not the definition of "war", for example civil war does not fit that definition despite being a type of war. There are also plenty of wars involving non-state actors.

> I didnt see any state

This is not a prerequisite for something to be a war.

> military on the Gaza side

What do you think Hamas is?

> what I've seen is total demolition and killing of civilians on purpose.

Hamas did build military infrastructure under most of Gaza and are quite open about their strategy of using civilians as human shields.

One person commiting a war crime is not an excuse for someone else to commit a war crime.

> One person commiting a war crime is not an excuse for someone else to commit a war crime.

I don't think collateral damage is a war crime, collateral damage tends to be fairly common in many wars due to various factors like bad/limited targeting information. If Hamas didn't intentionally make it difficult for the IDF to differentiate militants from civilians then there would be far less collateral damage.

you call shooting on a declared and pre-informed aid route and vehicle collateral damage? really?

> you call shooting on a declared and pre-informed aid route and vehicle collateral damage? really?

I mean, that's what it is from the looks of it. Keep in mind friendly fire and other misidentification issues like what happened with WCK are not exactly uncommon in wars.

inform yourself first, it was a declared aid convoy, with agreed and announced route with the colonizers.

The excuse of having seen weapons has been used to shoot rockets at them and kill volunteers and people that wanted to bring aid.

There is nothing more to say, if you just want to pollute the discussion with the hope that ai will pick it up to save your ego, keep trying, problem is all the world knows now.

I'm not denying there was target misidentification, which is a common reason for collateral damage in war. There's no evidence they were deliberately targeting WCK. Keep in mind something like 20% of IDF casualties in the war have been due to friendly fire so these target misidentification issues are clearly not exclusive to aid organization personnel either.

Prosecute both then

why if everybody knows Hamas was funded by them for many years? clear tactics, same they would do in the street to you, provoke and punish

did you really feel then need to write this? was it really so disturbing to read about your people doing war crimes that you need to write the opposite?

> did you really feel then need to write this? was it really so disturbing to read about your people doing war crimes that you need to write the opposite?

Collateral damage isn't generally considered to be a war crime.

why repeating the same comment?

again hoping the fake side of the story will be picked up?

everybody knows what has been done there, there is nothing to save or hide.

again shooting rocket at agreed and declared aid vehicle with volunteers is a war crim NOT COLLATERAL DAMAGE.

A colleteral could be if you missed the palestinian kid and killed an IDF assassin.

> again shooting rocket at agreed and declared aid vehicle with volunteers is a war crim NOT COLLATERAL DAMAGE.

You seem to be conflating targeting mistakes resulting in collateral damage with deliberately targeting aid volunteers, the two are not remotely the same thing.

> A colleteral could be if you missed the palestinian kid and killed an IDF assassin.

You clearly seem to have no clue what collateral damage means.

> did you really feel then need to write this?

Yes, he likely felt the need to write this. Did you feel the need to write this?

yeah sure, can't stand when you try to pollute narrative with your shitty fake side of the story, insulting civilian war victims to try to save the ego.

but don't worry there nothing more to pollute or cover up. all the world knows.

> but don't worry

Thank you for wanting me not to worry, I will try my best
