Also there is no singular antichrist. Samson was an antichrist. We are antichrists when we oppose his will. Thiel is the worst kind of dispensationalist.
Are you really going to sit here and pretend if the place you grew up in and invested your life began changing very drastically in a short time frame you wouldn’t be concerned for things you cherish? Why must the liberals always pretend to be inhuman when trying to discuss human rights? Refugees need homes and love and Germans are allowed to care about their culture.
Every place changes drastically. My country does not have an immigrant influx but is a completely different country from 20 years ago. Every person has what need as an excuse to become "conservative".
The changes are a constant everywhere. Using that as an excuse to hate is political manipulation.
Is it the case that all people concerned with preserving that with which they are familiar, in all circumstances, are hateful? Because there doesn’t seem to be a way for someone to express sentiment or care for a time and place without someone like you coming in to deliver that precise unfounded moral judgment. I will assume there IS a way to both be attached to something you care about and also be European so please just tell us what that way is so we can move forward. Because the longer people are scolded and called monsters for being attached to little delights they have grown accustomed to that might be changing, the more they will simply begin to identify as monsters. Let’s make room for different points of view.
You just can't stop the change. Much less decide how it will change. Hating different people and blaming them for your unhappiness won't solve the issue.
Think about it: 20 years ago you weren't a hateful person, that also changed. Why not get back to an older version of yourself? I'm sure at the time you thought things were amazing, there was already a bunch of frustrated middle aged men hating what you now love and miss.
Neither the person you respond to nor me wrote anything that indicates hate for anybody, this comes completely out of your head with no connection to the posts you are reacting to.
Of course having seen this you will still glaze your eyes over and insist nobody has ever made the accusations I claimed they did. Because none of this is about discussion but beating people into submission.
That wasn’t what I asked. I was asking for the way you will allow people to express themselves so that they can. As it stands, it feels like people assume there is one right way to think and no others need be considered.
Tellingly, your response to that exact question was “just get over it.” No. Sometimes you also must consider views you don’t hold.
I just went to zillow and typed in my zip and tried two different filters for single family homes priced between $300K-$550K:
Listings:
No HOA fee: 32
up to $500/month: 62
I'm not going to bother because this is an HN comment but I think you can imagine what happens to the results when I specify newer than say 1993 (when my house was built).
I have an HOA, but it seems defunct. Everything we do to the house, if visible, can be interpreted to mean I must get unanimous agreements, in writing, from all my neighbors.
It turns out I managed to land right between two asshole neighbors (constant trespassing, dogs, etc)
They're endemic in Florida because of the speed of real estate development there.
HOAs are pushed by state and local Florida governments because they create stronger guarantees about what a new development will self-maintain (and therefore won't need to be immediately funded by a local government).
Also... high COL coastal Floridians (and especially transplants) seem to be incredibly conservative in the sense of 'I want to keep my neighbor from doing anything crazy.'
For them, HOAs are a guarantee that the asset they bought is less likely to be blighted by its neighbors.
Personally? It itched like hell when I lived there, and that was with a fairly relaxed HOA. One of the many reasons I'd never live in Florida again.
Do you think there is some answer I could give that would alter the circumstances of my life 3 years ago, or are you gearing up to educate me about an event for which you were absent? I’m glad HOAs are rare where you buy houses.
Do all houses available require an HOA, even the ones that don’t look so nice or aren’t in great neighborhoods? I don’t usually like to go around questioning people’s experiences, but I think a lot of people go around with ideas of what an acceptable street looks like that simply aren’t achievable without an HOA or extreme price segregation.
What is the best alternative to that choice? You can’t answer since you aren’t the one in that position.
Frequently it is the least bad among a bunch of choices.
Choosing to go into crippling debt to pay cancer treatment bills is a choice too, but only a moron thinks the blame should be laid at the feet of the patient for making that “choice”.
I said it's a choice. At the end of the day people choose to live in these areas. Yes, it might be because the tradeoffs of not living there or moving away are severe and outweigh the headaches of an HOA, but it's still a choice they make.
If you want to buy swiss cheese and you have 17 supermarkets within convenient distance and none of them sell swiss cheese, you don't really have any options at all, despite the fake appearance of plentiful consumer choice.
Free markets (and the associated "invisible hand") only work when choice is truly available, not purely theoretical.
I weep for people whose scientistic reductionism has led to such devaluation of humanity. Robots don’t do anything and don’t think anything. Humans do things with and through them. What makes us special is that we exist and love one another.
