Yeah, I survived several layoff rounds at a company and my workload increased significantly. At first it was fine, even better in some ways to have more responsibility. Then the subsequent layoffs added too much, and we lost a lot of people with institutional knowledge, so I was being handed work with no one to talk to when I had questions.
tl:dr One round of layoffs isn't bad if you're staying, but subsequent rounds can make you miserable.
Isn't that a mixture of because they don't expect every child to survive to adulthood, and/or these are subsistence agricultural areas who need more manual labor?
I don't think it's a hostility to tech but different values that value consumer rights more than it values 'move fast and break things'. We have good things here and we don't like someone breaking them.
Problem is that we thought the US was 'cool', with US movies, music, digital services, cooler than our own and thus we helped give the US the lead. The US has lost it's coolness though, now we just think it's creepy.
Ha! 10-15 years ago, I wouldn't have used it that way either. But the stock markets these days just feel entirely speculative. It is not clear to me if individuals are buying these AI stocks based on their expected future revenue/profit or the whole space is just momentum plays and the funds are directly being transferred back to the companies (by way of incentive packages and ability to get loans based on market valuations) to keep the train moving, despite there being no clear profitable destination for any of the LLM sellers. The hardware folks are making out like bandits, though.
