I say this because that’s how the UK feels in most areas (outside of London), a bunch of “new flashy stuff” to prove that “we still got it” but it’s incredibly low quality while the actual infrastructure crumbles to bits.

no, it sends a large “click” across the whole surface which your finger registers as a local click, they have two large and two small haptic motors in a line iirc and they do some software magic to cancel out the click so it feels extremely localised.

I just tried on my macbook trackpad and if I rest a finger in on part and click with a finger in another part both fingers feel the click. But I suspect this is a feature, not a bug, for multi-touch interfaces.

iTunes Match (these days it's just under the umbrella of 'iCloud Music Library', I believe) is probably the greatest value Apple offers.

I have a local collection of over 30,000 mp3s, about half of which is not 'matched', and a sizable chunk of which is not available on streaming anywhere, and I have it on all my devices seamlessly, included with the price of an Apple Music subscription. (which I also use for convenience for listening to things I don't have my own copy of yet).

The fact right now is that handling cash is more expensive than handling card- even with the fees, which is why Sweden, Estonia etc; are essentially cash-free countries.

I also had the X1 Snapdragon T14s and it felt like going back to 2008 linux.

There is a special version of Ubuntu that largely works (it's a bit old) and if you dist-upgrade to a new version it will break.

I spent about a week trying to get it working and just gave up, awful experience.

Energy cannot be created nor destroyed, it can only be transformed. This is the first law of thermodynamics and as far as I'm aware nobody has managed to refute it.

Finding better ways of controlling where energy comes from and where it goes, and doing it in a controlled way that has minimal impact on the surroundings is good (from an ecological perspective)- it is the most pure good an ecologist can hope for.

"Reduce, Reuse" has its place, but that place has to be in-line with also finding a way to balance our human needs with the environment.

I don't think reducing our energy consumption is realistic, many things that have a long-tail reduction in energy consumption have a huge up front cost.

For example, electric vehicles are a bitch to manufacture but are less impactful for the environment over a long term; and this is amplified if the energy that is produced to be used in the electric car has a minimal impact on the environment (Solar, Wind, Nuclear) - but nuclear plants have a huge up-front energy cost too.

I'll be forthcoming and say that I have a concern that over-reliance on solar and wind may have negative consequences on the environment too- harvesting wind energy from the atmosphere that animals may rely on, will likely impact the environment in ways we haven't thought about. However it's significantly better than coal and gas, and that's the marker we're going for: not perfect.. better.

Everything is bad at a certain scale after all, we just haven't hit that scale with our renewables- and because of this, on a baseline, I agree with you.

I don't use bookmarks because what's the point in saving a link to something.

Am I going to scroll through and find it later? Barely functions with text search due to only minimal metadata (maybe a title).

Worse still, I used to use bookmarks for things I wanted to return to, but now they're all dead links pretty much.. so now I have to go through and get disappointed because something interesting has now gone.

Total waste of time.

I tend to feel fine with IDEs using buckets of resources, after all: they are specialist tools.

But I have been using their jetbrains remote system, and you can clearly see how incredibly high the RAM usage is on both server and client.

Personally I am also looking at the door, but not because of the resource usage… but because they keep putting resources into things which aren’t their core offering and it makes me wonder if they have run out of innovation in that area.

… then again, they did recently figure out how to make development on a Windows remote work… so I can keep using my linux machine while developing Windows software, so I think that earned a lot of goodwill from me.

I find I still use the paid IDE's (RustRover and WebStorm), even when using LLM's for reviewing code and applying corrections. It's often just faster to do that, especially with an IDE which allows for quick non linear navigation through the files (following functions etc.). I think this is where JetBrain's IDE's excel. I can live with the high startup cost as long as it is quick afterwards.

I do feel however they have been neglecting anything non-AI for a while now. I in particular loved their auto complete, and with the new guesswork AI auto complete it's just not the same. I want deterministic behaviour from my IDE.

On the LLM side, I couldn't use the Anthropic subscription with their offerings, so I just use it from a harness outside the IDE, and switch to the IDE for review. This may not be JB's fault, but it still makes their offering useless to me.

I may be one of the few remaining but I also still program myself sometimes (I weigh it based on the task). The IDE has been pushing so much AI it has been getting in my way sometimes, and it is definitely using more resources for stuff I don't use.

I too am on the fence on whether I'll resume my subscription. Luckily for JB I dearly dislike VSCode's code navigation and interface, and would severely miss their debugging tools integration.

We tried to make this work, but unfortunately hit a hard stop with Anthropic: their current policies do not allow us to support this integration :c

JetBrainer here. For both this comment and the parent...I get you. It feels like the whole industry has gotten sucked into this vortex where people don't even look at code anymore.

I'm happy about our Air launch because we're being AI "realists"...neither too much sunshine pumping nor too much skeptic. We're doubling down on developers and development, both when you type and when you don't.

On to the point..I can promise the PyCharm is doing some pretty massive non-AI stuff on the deterministic side. I think determinism is the best path to trusting the code generated by the box.

I get super bent out of shape when Apple TV+ advertises shows before the one I am trying to watch; even sometimes advertising the show that I am trying to watch itself and spoiling things.

I have actually cancelled my subscription because of this.

I've talked to Apple support about this. Their website says...

    Apple Originals are always commercial-free.

But you are forced to watch ads for other shows before viewing an Apple original. The support person said that because the ads are before the show you are trying to watch, that the show itself is indeed commercial-free. Language lawyering at its finest.

Yeah, I actually canceled Netflix when they started making it impossible to look at the available shows without seeing previews of each of them. I am trying to leisurely decide what I want to watch, not have 15 different actors scream catchphrases at me.

I don’t see this maybe because my Netflix app is older (on a 2018-era Roku tv). But it is annoying as shit on my friends tv with chrome cast.

My journey went from downloading movies and TV shows to paying for Netflix, Apple, and Prime. Then back to torrents to avoid all the trailers and ads and curated feed. It's so peaceful now.

Good for you. It's impressive how many get jerked around but don't do the obvious thing and cancel the damn service. More people should feel outraged and insulted by these shenanigans.

You can't even find wired (aux) headphones... So tempering expectations when you finally decide to "go back" to simple things is required.

I like to buy my media rather than pirate (I am a man of means after all) but I can't even buy modern media.. Silo, Ted Lasso, Severance and Slow Horses do not have purchasable releases at all. At least some Prime TV shows have blu-ray releases I suppose.
