MAD: not just for nuclear proliferation anymore

now everything is a dual use technology.

That’s what I’ve been telling my PM: I don’t need your half-baked PR you one shotted from a prompt: put that prompt in GitHub Issues for the team to use later

This comment captures the essence of why HN is largely anti AI. They feel their security and roles as software devs starting to devalue. Non coders are encroaching on their turf. A PM can do now what mid level devs did before. As AI continues to advance there will be less of a need for devs and the pool size of devs will start to shrink, as it already has. I understand the human reaction to this. It’s a hard situation to watch us being replaced by a machine. Especially after sitting at the top of the comp ranking for so many years. It’s a scary time.

The PM doesn’t have a runtime environment to test the change. No access to create a PR. Zero verification was done and I was handed a .zip file

I don’t disagree with what you’re saying, but not all cases are created equal. If the PM could create a PR that was clearly verified, like we expect out of all the SWEs, I wouldn’t have a problem.

PMs are doing demos to leadership where their change “just works”. The devs and maybe even the dev leads may protest that due diligence wasn’t done, but leadership is looking at the engineering cost center, axe in hand.

Understandable. Surprised that's not automated though. Would be worth the time to invest in that area, will save a lot of pain and time in the future. As we shift more to AI, testing is more important than ever and all of that can generally be automated.

Multiple companies I know of have internal tool websites that are the front end to the major AI companies and it has access to cut PRs so non devs are able to open PRs

Sure. Specifically I work on SOX restricted code, but the rest of the company has what you’re describing.

> It’s a scary time.

And that is why you felt you needed to boost the narrative and reinforce it so people are fired faster. Totally believable!

Better than remaining in denial about it like most people on here.

Sol 6.1 is really good too though

I don’t think it’s a sad life if you don’t have these things

If you're poor or otherwise lack good health insurance it's very likely you will endure negative health consequences as a result.

If you don't have money it's very likely that you'll have a poor diet and have negative health consequences, be dumber, be able to do less, and just generally have a life filled with more suffering.

Sure but there’s a wide band between not having money and having generational wealth.

they are aggressively trying to obliterate that and have been quite successful already

Advice I got at an early job: every time you get a raise, set up auto transfer to savings/investment for the net new and keep the same lifestyle (thank you Ramit Sethi)

4% of 5m is 200k; not a high level FAANG TC

Also a squarely middle class income in a vhcol area like the Bay Area. But a super luxurious lifestyle.

200k is very high L4 at Google, medium L5, not out of the question for L6, and 300k is definitely L6 level (2% or so are your odds of getting there)

Also different tax rates for investment vs income: 200k taxed at 30% is easily L6 level compensation. And if you're comparing to L6 anywhere outside of US it's easily L7.

Also: these amounts are declining. Except perhaps in AI.

In my experience, those numbers are low for the US. This is about accurate: https://www.levels.fyi/companies/google/salaries/software-en...

Some in the US as well, but it seems to skew towards wealthy (Gates) and universities, and not politicians.

Unsurprisingly, liberal-aligned society has done a much better job of holding their own accountable than the side that moved Ghislaine Maxwell to "Club Fed", the most desirable federal prison in the US.

In my day, we used a boot disk to restart without Windows 95 so we could run Doom with 8mb RAM

Surely one missed tax payment is not enough for the government to evict and assume ownership? I see these cases in SF occasionally and it takes years of non-payment.

Sure. But that’s why schools in California are underfunded.

California doesn’t have a property tax system. They have a tax on newcomers. It’s entirely corrupt.

I pay property tax twice a year in SF, not sure what you mean

he means CA home values are re-assessed at purchase not annually like most other places. so your new neighbor is paying a lot more in property tax than the people that have been on the block 20 years.

Which is a reason schools are underfunded
