Me too. I don’t know how that’s even possible though without bias and whatnot finding a way. Sometimes you find out at the same rate as the manufacturer. Hell, I typed this on my third iPhone 18 in last ~month, after never having a single iPhone hardware issue in almost 2 decades, Not even a dead battery, this version has been awful. First one had weak antenna, second USB port didn’t work, third TBD. The associates I’ve worked with say they’ve never seen a version rollout with so many issues.

> it has a fully script-based syntax now

What does this mean? This being a revelation for a web tech solution strikes me as strange. I saw a tiny bit of CF like 25 years ago and perhaps mistakenly thought it did this back then.

It used by be a markup language like:

  do thisdo that
But now it has its own scripting language like:

  // scripty stuff

At least, that is how it used to be :)

Ahh. Yeah. Well that sparks a memory of why I quickly went another direction after looking at it back then when I was learning web dev lol. Tbf a lot of people were, probably still are, using PHP and JavaScript way back then too. It just made sense for me to do some MVC style separation long before I found out there was an acronym for it.

cfscript has been part of ColdFusion since 1998. It has expanded over time to include more functionality, but it has been there.

Also the markup-based functionality hasn't gone anywhere.

Regarding cost per unit. I think the publisher likes this type of partner because they can really get their initial order volume up high without much risk. This allows them to have a super low cost per unit, maximizing profit, from the start.

Yup, and the “industry standard” wholesale discount publishers give to e.g. bookstores is usually 55%

That seems like an incredible discount. Can I assume then that bookstores are competing against each other via very minute (perhaps one or two dollar) price discounts while still maintaining a high profit margin?

I worked at a publisher back around 2010.

The unit cost for the publisher to put a $20 AUD book on a shelf in a book shop was about $2 AUD.

The bookstore kept quite a bit of that margin - $10 or so - but they had to pay rent & staff a store. If they were only selling $500 worth of books per day, it wouldn't have mattered if their margin was 100%, the fixed overheads would eat it all. If they could keep stock turning over quickly, the profits were impressive.

That makes sense to me. Thank you for that anecdote. I had no idea about these figures.

Also, it wouldn't have made sense to squeeze the bookshop for a bigger share of the margins, because they'd have moved our books to the back corner of the store and put something higher-margin in the highly-visible shelves, and then our volumes would have been poorer.

Most bookshops had a sizeable space dedicated to our books.

When it comes to bookstores you can safely assume they do not have high profit margins.

In the Netherlands competing with discount is actually illegal, interestingly enough. The selling price is fixed. Which is a boon for smaller bookshops, but annoying for publishers if the production prices aren't stable.

This is pretty normal for manufacturer to retail. Retail is commonly 100% markup from their cost.

> initial order volume

None of the books you get through this program are new releases. But they are printed special for imagination library.

Probably. I don't have any special knowledge of how it's handled. But, one thing that I know is frequently taking place in similar industries, and I imagine would be taking place here, is they slap a different binding on the books. So they get a set of retail ready, SKU/UPC/MSRP included prints, and they get the ones for the program out of the same print run. Of course, the books are often not new releases so "initial" may not be true - but they get to batch them and maximize volume at the time of print. There's other programs like this out there, my son get's a box of books shipped to him monthly from some subscription his grandparents signed up for, they're almost certainly negotiating pricing based on volume and the printer and publisher are likely using it to their advantage as well (trying to print as much at once as possible).

The idea is that the hardware overlaps enough that consumers would rather only buy the generic version which is the PC. It works for gaming and everything else. There was a time consoles thought they could steal share from the PC market by including browsers and whatnot but I think that never panned out as expected

Want to sell mine, haven’t played it in over 2 years. Wish they’d send me the offer .

This nervousness excuse is crap too. This is a natural response towards LEO. Do they not understand what they represent is fear to manu parts of our society?

Imagine your innocent wife, mother, daughter, aunt, coworker, while 1. She’s trying to drive across a large vast section of America. Gets stopped by cops late night in stinky west texas. They remove her from her car , into theirs, for interrogation. Would she be nervous?

[flagged]

If I can be shot dead for being pulled over for a broken tail light, or for reaching into a pocket for the driving licence the cop just requested me to produce, or being robbed from all my cash and debit cards without reason, or jailed based on the wrongly conducted roadside "drug" analysis of my donut, yeah, I have every right to be nervous.

Cops are definitely not my friend, I fully expect them to lie, fabricate "evidence" and look for any excuse to cause problems, and it's all on them.

100% fabricated bullshit. Good thing we have bodycams to tell the truth.

What is the fabricated bullshit?

All these examples have been widely reported nationwide, some worldwide. No need to even dig through the local reporting.

Are you saying there have been no cases when the "routine" traffic stop resulted in the cop killing an unarmed civilian still sitting in the car?

Or maybe that roadside "drug testers" are solid so when the untrained rookie uses a tiny piece of glazing to "check for drugs", the use is according to the manual and thus gives no false positives? John Oliver has a very good video on that.

Cops are no-ones friend and the multiple examples from the bodycams proved exactly that.

That’s an absurd statement. I’m an upstanding citizen who’s never been arrested and I’ve gotten extremely nervous every time I have ever been pulled over.

I don’t need to be fed propaganda, I can watch their own body cam footage myself.

I wonder what you takeaway from store robberies' footage then.

Unless there are officers present, I don’t see what that has to do with the conduct of police officers.

Do you only derive anything about police officers, from any kind of footage?

I bet you don't watch police bodycam footage where they go about their duties, help people or detain dangerous criminals risking their own lives and limbs.

I have seen such footage, and I’m glad some officers take their job seriously.

But unless you know a way to tell apart those who abuse their power from those who don’t, I have to consider all officers as antagonistic and potentially dangerous.

You see, if I’m wrong, then I could end up in jail or injured or dead while they get paid leave.

> help people or detain dangerous criminals risking their own lives and limbs.

As we’ve seen them feeling afraid for their life is justification enough to kill you. It makes the risking life and limb part less admirable.

Bad cops aren’t necessarily bad on every call or interaction. They pick their moments or sometimes maybe just make bad decisions.

Back to the example at hand, this woman alone in her car at night in a rural/isolated area. This is a comparable situation as a baby gazelle separated from the herd and surrounded by lions. They really have no power to control the situation if the officers want to do whatever they want.

Anecdotally, a story we see on the news often enough to justify the nervousness. I had a distant family member, a step-uncle I think, when I was younger. He was a constable or something. He drove a cop car and had the uniform but my understanding was he just had a desk job. This was late 80s/early 90s, so different tech landscape and basically was no record of his behavior. But I guess after 50+ complaints, there was an investigation and he lost his job. Turned out he would perform traffic stops with his car, to only single female drivers, then would coerce them into a sexual act. Basically, give me a BJ and I won’t give you a ticket. I don’t know if it was fully consensual but I know back then it was just his word versus theirs and only when the volume of complaints was high enough his superiors decided to fire him. No criminal investigation, or I would say nothing more than just quietly letting him go. The family only found out because it ended with a divorce and my aunt and cousins had to live with the fallout from that. I think it was buried from the media but I was young so maybe it was public and I just don’t know. We were in a big city so it wasn’t big enough to be a tv news story.

Their boots must be tasty.

If you ignore the uncountable amount of incidents where LEOs abuse their power then you could think that, yes.

Otherwise you just know that LEOs are your enemy in more cases than not.

LOL my dude go see if cops in other developed countries kill civilians at the rate US cops do! Germany even has a Wikipedia page for people killed by cops because it's so little.

Sure, part of the reason is German cops have far better training, and are more accountable, but there is also the incredibly sophisticated practice of not requiring a police stop for a simple speeding infraction. You get the fine per mail. That's it.

Certain demographics would call your post a rather privileged one.

Cops are your enemy, and yes, every single one of them unless they get better training and procedures to effectively yeet out bad apples.

I feel this way too. A huge trend in general I have noticed with younger generations, as gaming has modernized and matured, is the overall importance of story and cohesion. Plumber fell in a pipe and discovered weirdness was all we needed. I don’t play a lot these days but when I do I still just tend to skip over the story part or get annoyed when it won’t let me.

Likely yes. Different times, different sensibilities. But also there’s always a range of opinions even among experts. How long did it take medicine to agree on tobacco use and whether an egg is healthy?

You could sell that as a red hat to orange guy fans. You can have it made in China with a Sold in USA sticker and charge 2x. They’ll never notice the irony.

I've got a bridge with a name on it to sell you, greatest deal ever, no ones seen anything like it before

This. Wanting to migrate isn’t a universal binary desire, it’s conditional. There is a cohort of people that wanted to migrate to the US and when that desire changes they do not wish to migrate at all. They don’t look for alternatives migration points, so the US and UK are moving the average downward.
