> We’re already ripping the spines out of old rare paper books (we playfully call these “low-background steel”)

can someone closer to pretraining elaborate?

Not at all close, but this link might give you more to go on (includes more links):

Replace "nuclear explosion" with "AI produced works"

In this context it means "text written before the advent of AI slop, so we know it at least came from humans and wasn't influenced by AI slop".

isnt Anthropic already too-big-to-fail?

I seem to get by fine on the daily without using any LLMs. They’re just-the-right-size-to-fail.

was fun at college to plug in a laptop into the dormroom's ethernet jack and get assigned a public address. (i went to a /16 school, not a /8 sadly)

public markets point to FORTINET

jagged frontier means AI may become vastly superhuman in capabilities in many areas that matter (even up to existential or mass disempowerment risk) without reaching this definition of AGI.

No one can agree what AGI means anymore. Pretty sure we are close enough to call it.

isnt this what footnotes are for?

my understanding is that a sufficiently large model will memorize the training data once enough representations are built up. Opus 4 scale seems to have been sufficient. cf NYT vs OAI.

(another guess) to convert to dollars, the gold would need to be delivered to the custody of the US Fed, which is easiest when the bars are physically in the Fed's vault. in a low-trust situation, you have all the gold in your own country, but then its so much leas liquid bc you need to physically deliver it to trading partners, or they must trust your accounting of their share in your vault.

ikr? ive been really hoping to be embedded already but Zephyr/C seema still the pragmatic choice for most embedded.

bump up to EmbeddedLinux and i think Rust wins ovr C

It's totally plausible portmanteau. I get the feeling thought that it sounds more marked in English than in German where these kind of mashups are formed more freely.
