AverMedia makes decent ones. I think Magewell makes "professional" ones that give you the best image quality (4:4:4), but I haven't personally used them so can't attest to their quality.
Then there are all kinds of USB cards from dubiously named manufacturers, most being some white label chip that everyone uses. Some can work decently, some have a terrible capture rate like you mentioned. Due to the nature of these sellers popping up and disappearing, I can't really make a recommendation.
This guy can't even be bothered to type his own thoughts out, but expects us to read what claude dumped out? Typing your own thoughts is just not hard at all, I don't get it.
So are we just letting go and having clankers write everything now while we have other clankers "explain" it to us? Just collectively, "fuck it" ?
The software I use day to day is just getting worse and worse, and I can only guess that AI is accelerating that problem. Like I can barely convince spotify to play a full album anymore without it "failing to play a song", crashing, or play without audio underruns. We're so screwed if we can't even play audio smoothly in 2026.
Sorry, just ranting. But I see tools like this that are basically encouraging people to "let go" of understanding what exactly your code is doing, and continue to let the robot pile more and more code on top of the bad abstractions we already have.
hmm - I think we care about the same problems you do ("software I use day to day is just getting worse and worse"). and pandora's box is already open with getting AI to write code - it's just so much faster than us.
but i think being a "good software engineer" was never really about the writing code part though - it was in the craft of designing systems, making sure that they were designed thoughtfully and are extensible etc.
fwiw Whiteboard is our stab at helping to fix this problem. we put a lot of effort into the diff viewer, tying the diagrams into the actual code, etc. so you can make sure you're not shipping slop. the point is to not have the agent "explain" it to you with a wall of slop, but instead to give you the tools so the diffs themselves feel approachable. the Whiteboard surface is meant as a springboard into the code underneath.
At least spiritually, this tool is definitely NOT meant for folks to let go of understanding the code. It's meant at tackling precisely the opposite problem - understanding the code still while still working with your agents.
This drives me crazy. Sometimes I'll just put the phone down and move to a proper keyboard to type what I want. It definitely makes me use my phone less, maybe that's a good thing overall.
Do we really need a "next-generation living room web engine"? These smart TV OSes almost always suck ass, I wish all the TV manufacturers would just give up and ship simple panels with just basic volume and input selection control.
Or if you absolutely _must_ insist on shipping "smart" features, why do you still need to ship a full browser engine to show some text, rectangles, and images?
All apps on smart TVs are browser apps. Some, like Youtube, get special privileges (that is, can run their own app), but also need to run some kind of UI since TVs have no standard UI libraries. Youtube decided to run a stripped down version of Chrome (Cobalt). Others (IIRC Netflix) run their own renderer. Or do weird stuff, see Comcast and Lightning https://www.lightningjs.io/
TVs own interfaces are some bespoke one-off stuff that isn't exposed to other apps.
And this sucks because Raspberry PIs have more powerful hardware than even modern high-end TVs.
There's some exceptions to this rule. Google TV devices are Android under the hood and thus, the TV apps are Android apps distributed as apk's just like on smartphones (not web apps).
Most of those are webapps too (just packaged in APK) since it doesn't make sense for most app developers to build a special bespoke version for Android.
If you check YouTube version string you'll see Cobalt as well on Android.
People watch YouTube on their TV. Having an independent rendering engine makes the TV OS's garbage stuff go away from the perspective of YouTube's app.
I wish more people knew how nice it is! And the toilet is in a completely separate room so there's no contention among one person who wants to take a bath and another who needs to use the toilet.
I just wish dish washers and dryers were more common in Japanese households. I'm in Okinawa where dryers are a lot more "standard", but dish washers are relatively rare.
