Open plan offices aren't going away and nothing will really change because open plan offices have long been used where lots of people spend all day talking on the phone.
Acoustic privacy is has two components. Attenuation is the obvious one. Masking is the one that's not. Controlling rather than minimizing white noise from air-conditioning is the ordinary approach by professionals.
Of course, a lot of open office designs are driven by "taste" rather than judgement informed by experience and science. So you get hard floors and hard ceilings instead of carpet and acoustic tile (it's right in the name, duh) and complaints.
In other words, it's a solved problem. Poor choices aren't.
Buffalo shipped the WZR series routers with DD-WRT. But they stopped making them when the FCC restricted router firmware about a decade ago.
I bought a pair of them at the time. Kept one (N600) until I needed a 'mesh' and sold it on eBay about four years ago. Replaced it with an Orbi system that doesn't need to phone home (not sure such things are still available in the consumer market).
The ones that I had came with Buffalo firmware but you could load DD-WRT on them through the web ui. To load OpenWrt you had to use tftp and catch it during boot.
I ended up adding support for the G300NH2 model for OpenWrt.
feels like I've been beamed back to the 1950s or something
That might because the US was largely electrified by 1950 with the major push before The War during the 1930's via the Rural Electrification Administration.
By The War the TVA was up and running and that's where nuclear materials were manufactured for The Bomb.
you should choose the defaults of your communication culture in such a way, that it works under the absolute worst conditions
The defaults are sensible. Throw money at it and pay someone enough to sort things out and get it done, e.g. you as a freelancer get a data dump and ask the right question and the problem is solved. Sure it costs money. But everything costs money.
Git works great among peers. But most organizations are hierarchical. And the boss doesn't have to give a shit about which draft is the latest because the boss is the boss.
> And the boss doesn't have to give a shit about which draft is the latest because the boss is the boss.
As a boss myself I have to say: I totally give a shit. Salaries are my company’s #1 expense by a wide margin. I don’t want my staff spending their time manually merging docs received via email when there are much better solutions out there. I hire people because they are smart and can get shit done that makes money, not because I want servants.
This is the killer app for Office 365 and google docs: stop wasting time emailing shit around, one canonical version even outside of company walls.
It uses an SQLite database, which doesn't bother me. Databases are great at this stuff.
A Database is great.
Two databases are a migration.
Org-mode plus a file system is a database.
All databases are not relational; relational databases are the tool you want when you want algebraic operations; you might not need algebraic operations for your operations but relational databases are a hammer.
I use keyboards with two ctrl and two alt keys. Thinkpads and some Dell laptops have them, and of course there are external keyboards with those keys too.
A related approach I use with 'gear' is "can I buy another one if I really want one again?" (because I have a bit of GAS).
Of course I am economically privileged for being able approach the problem that way. Not everyone is.
