This sentence:

> But if you've ever rubbed a wild baby whale's nose while looking at it in the eyes -- and experienced the emotional connection which results -- then you will be forever incapable of hostility, apathy, or utilitarian thinking about whales.

Comment you're replying to is saying that this is optimistic; most people are capable of doublethink, and will quite happily "love" one individual of a species while being completely indifferent to the death and suffering of the rest of that species. I've observed the same phenomenon.

In that comment it was the farmers wife who trained the pig to live in the house like a dog, and then the farmer himself who killed the pig.

I do agree that doublethink is widespread (just look at how we treat other humans, no need to go across species) but I think these are choices that happen on a personal level and can hardly be generalized. I know people who stopped eating octopus after seeing My Octopus Teacher, and I've seen Chinese restaurants serving dog meat. We live in a world full of contraddictions.

The farmer still lived together with the pig, engaged with it etc. I dont know the exactl level of engagement, but i doubt that he simply never saw the pig as a pet. It was just so engrained that its a agricultural product at the end of the season, and that it was in its nature to be slaughtered that he didnt even question it.

I was not saying it isnt possible to be changed by such an experience, just that other drivers might override that. There is Vegan Hunters that kill deer for the stability of the ecosystem as an exotic example.

>> and will quite happily "love" one individual of a species while being completely indifferent to the death and suffering of the rest of that species.

Similar to how a significant subset of the human population responds to other humans.

I'd be surprised if all of it is organic discussion, shall we say. I reckon The Bot Factory just possibly might dogfood the astroturf machine.

You did a fantastic job; very to-the-point with effective visualisations. Kudos!

One very minor note: if your scroll device reports pixel-perfect deltas rather than discrete scroll-wheel ticks (e.g. logitech mx master, laptop touchpad, etc), the behaviour in the word search box is a bit weird. Arrow keys work fine though.

Thank you!

I did test it with my mac touchpad without issue. Maybe the problem is that I wanted to make discrete scroll-wheel ticks work. I just tried a fix by normalising deltaMode to pixels.

If you could just paste this in your console, I would have a better idea:

    document.querySelector('.wall').addEventListener('wheel', e =>
      console.log(e.deltaMode, e.deltaY.toFixed(2), e.defaultPrevented ? 'PAGE' : 'native'), true)

FWIW I got a bunch of "(-)10.00 native" in the console, "PAGE" never showed up no matter what I tried. Firefox, also a Logitech mouse, no trackpad though.

On a compatible Logitech device, browsing through the word search box benefits a lot from enabling hyperscroll.

For those who didn't know (like me 5 min ago):

Hyperscroll - special mode turned on with a button next to scroll that turns off scroll friction and let's you scroll into infinity (wheel keeps turning after you lift your finger).

Yeah, it takes some getting used to (the wheel is VERY sensitive to even the smallest finger movements), but when you get used to it, it's clearly superior to a regular scrollwheel. Much less finger fatique.

G502 user here! I also put a draggable scrollbar for the less lucky :)

> Some believe what separates men from animals is our ability to reason. Others say it’s language or romantic love, or opposable thumbs. Living here in this lost world, I’ve come to believe it is more than our biology. What truly makes us human is our ability to hyperscroll!

> Arthur Conan Doyle, The Lost World

> nobody needs psych meds for any good purpose

You must be fortunate to be able make that assertion so confidently. Generalising from a sample size of 1 is the kind of thing that gets you sent to grippy sock jail.

I mean, depending on what you mean by "small smartphone", the early models definitely count (3.5"-4" diagonal). They were huge screens for their time, but nowadays everything's a phablet so they look tiny by comparison.
