to finally have a Blue iMessage bubble in your group texts

That likely doesn't work because they require device attestation to access imessage. It's what killed beeper mini too.

Stolen valor!

Teach your child Mathematics.

America is in piss poor 25th place in PISA ranking in Mathematics. Never rely on public school to be anything, but free daycare. Teachers (Education majors) are regularly self-selected from the bottom of the barrel SAT score students, so dont ever rely on teachers to do anything.

Teach your kid everything you want them to know.

you cant teach these, the kid will naturally pick up and learn from parents and the environment.

so the best way to teach your kids is to teach yourself to be a better person

At this stage, I feel kids learn more in their environments than their parents...

Behavior learnt from school is exhausting me.

>you cant teach these,

you can absolutely teach those

… but you can’t force them to learn. Explicit instruction that isn’t backed by modeled behavior isn’t going to be very effective, IMO.

right. "teaching" isn't restricted solely to explicit instruction.

regardless of how you teach them, the kids will grow up just like their parents

Religions lose half their members every generation, I believe the evidence is robust kids can pick a different path than their parents. You can guide, support, and nurture, but their personality is theirs once they reach escape velocity. Empathy and curiosity is brain structure though (the amygdala, broadly speaking).

parents are a huge factor, yes, but what you've said is not an absolute.

my dad was an abusive alcoholic. i have never laid a hand on my kids. i am not just like my dad.

I think "exactly like their parents" and "exactly opposite their parents" are indeed the two most likely outcomes.

(And congratulations on breaking the cycle. It's not easy.)

That's not an absolute rule, of course...

why do you think stereotypes are wrong?

stereotypes are sticky because they are correct more times than they are wrong

  > boomers are bad at tech
  > not all boomers! these couple ones are pretty good!
both statements are correct, tone policing is incorrect

What's (probably) incorrect is drawing conclusions based on A without considering the Bs in the population.

Consider: the leading cause of death for young black men is being killed by other black men. Not all young black men! Lots of them are pretty good! Both of those statements are true. What's incorrect is to use it to draw conclusions like "so police should stop and frisk young black men" or "we should avoid endangering the rest of our employees by hiring young black men".

The top-level comment was using age stereotypes to "prove" that an older legislative body is going to misunderstand technology, and therefore produce bad regulation. Showing that the argument was wrong because stereotypes aren't universal, and because in this case there's reason to believe that the samples are selected in a way that would tend to avoid the stereotype, isn't "tone policing". It's directly attacking the argument itself of that parent comment.

no, you did not prove anything. Boomers are indeed bad in tech in general, and the presence of few tech literate does not change the general population

Nope, both statements are completely wrong because 52 years old, and thereabouts, is GenX not Boomer.

And yes it makes a difference. They would have grown up with the first home computers like the 8 bit C64 or ZX Spectrum, and later the 16 bit Amiga A500 or Atari ST.

it feels like a transition from artisan level work to factory based industrial manufacturing.

the functionally same product is still being made, but there is less human involvement in the craft, and more of a human management over the manufacturing process

And the same thing will happen to devs that happened to factory workers. Jobs will get moved offshore, and salaries will drop, mass layoffs. And SWE's don't have unions like factory workers did.

Maybe it's time for SWE's to unionize.

It's long since past, and it's not like unions would've saved the industry from AI, like Europe has unions too (and their software industry is quite poor compared to the US in general, partially due to higher regulation on companies and workers both).

how is it possible that fridges are exposed bare bones to Internet?

why not put them behind corporate VPN of some kind?

you can just walk into any store, find ANY PC and stick your USB drive into it.

or find any exposed Ethernet slot and slide your device in it.

most of the time it will work and you will get an inside access.

publicly available retail stores require multiple layers of defense across the L7 stack

Author described good ole PHP 3.

Early PHP (3 and 4) were the thin layer over the C libraries and were pretty fast and easy. it came about right when CGI was deprecated and it solved CGI's problems

That’s ironic because 99% of PHP code today is served using PHP-FPM which is essentially a FastCGI wrapper around PHP.

ad-hominem allegations against prosecutor are irrelevant, the ICC court decides, prosecutor only broughts facts from his side.

why did the jew never defend itself in the ICC, if he is innocent ?

The Jew?
