That's the whole point. Convert the most basic and mundane thing into a revenue-generating subscription.

I'm assuming it was a joke. I'm hoping it was a joke. Please assure me it was a joke.

It's okay, Perl, Python, Go, and Rust do the same thing with their respective package managers.

Well, you certainly should check your Perl knowledge - it's older and do not use Github as a repo :) There is CPAN and testers, etc. Other languages do not invested into that "intemediary" infra.

So "downloading" part is just looking similiar.

SaaS... the thing where you have to shutdown your business for the day because AWS us-east is down even though your application runs on Azure?

SREs became a thing because management realized the DevOps mindset of making your programmers DBAs and sys admins wasn't really working but management were too ashamed to admit they were wrong so they invented a new term.

Well, to be fair, having separate DBAs and sysadmins wasn’t working either.

Mainly because they kept telling the developers "No". SREs just do that at scale.

I'm tired of tech people forgetting to see if something else is using a name: http://www.prospero.org/

Way to cause confusion.

This is like starting a new country and calling it France.

France is one of the most well known countries, this old Prospero isn't that famous. It's more like Guinea and someone came up with New Guinea. Oh, wait.

My browser no likey the cert

There is no cert. It's http. That's how old Prospero is.

As someone else mentioned, it's almost certainly licensing costs. Monotype bought up all the classic foundries, and their licensing gets very expensive, very quick. You could literally hire a top-tier type designer as a permanent full-time hire to work on your in-house fonts part time and then do whatever they want with the other 99.9% of their time and it would still be cheaper than what Monotype wants.

So they get deskilled which means they're no longer considered professionals but merely technicians which means they're now elligible for overtime.

That's for mission-critical load-bearing infrastructure hidden behind modernized interfaces. Nobody has touched that script in 33 years.

Exactly. That's why they should handle device independent output.
