There are several of these clones floating around now. Who is furthest along in functionality and community support? Have any of these attracted a community of contributors?

I would be careful treating this article as relevant in September 2026. The pace of advancement in the field is such that 6 months is relatively ancient let alone when the models in the study were released. GPT-4o was May 13, 2024. Far before November 2025 when people collectively noticed a turn in LLM value.

LLMs earlier this year were surpassing numerous health related benchmarks when scored against human physicians. Only 2 months after this nature article Harvard posted that LLMs were now outperforming ER docs when given authority to order tests. https://www.harvardmagazine.com/ai/ai-outperforms-doctors-di...

Carney's speech is here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7Y9eFJFZfo

The text of the speech is at https://www.pm.gc.ca/en/news/speeches/2026/09/17/prime-minis...

The wording is such that it sounds like he is pushing a very ambitious portfolio. It appears that the idea is to make this a model for a new alliance that will include other countries over time.

The other deals Canada has made with the EU have been very substantive. CETA was the first major trade deal that the EU passed.

> build more secure broadband connections between Europe and Asia via our common geography.

That made me do a double take and then rewind (I watched the full speech in the background), that's a fairly seismic shift if followed through and will reshape the internet over the next few decades (go look at a current fibre map for global internet links, they pretty much all route through the US and land in the UK), having an alternative path through Canada into the UK/Europe is a big change.

Interesting from a surveillance point of view. Are we going to end up with the Four Eyes?

I do wonder how much of that still applies anyway, the extremely cosy/informal relationship between the five members can't really work in a world where one member is threatening to annexe the territory of one and support the annexation of another.

Trump wading into the Falklands debate was catastrophically stupid (not that I would expect otherwise) and chopped the legs out from the people who'd support him/their style of politics here.

So was threatening Canada, that's how he ended up dealing with Carney which from his PoV was the much worse outcome.

I suspect that the various staff of the permanent ("deep") state who roll their eyes at democratic accountability are just continuing to do their own thing together. Especially as they tend to have conservative politics and the same personal list of friend and enemy countries that is not easily updated.

Probably, even if the instruction comes down from on high to not co-operate so much institutional inertia (and decades of working together) will keep it going for a while, likely til the senior folks retire.

Scott Aaronson remarks in this article that the labs are sitting on a whole pile of incredible results that they cannot figure out how to release given the reception to the Navier-Stokes proof.

One wrench to throw into this is that there are a lot of bugs around Lean and they have been incidentally exploited in the past. Hence, we still need a level of human verification today.

I've worked at companies where we transfer people to Canada during periods like this in the same time zone. Sometimes they enjoy it so much they don't want to transfer back to the US.

Very interesting speech and Q&A from Prime Minister Carney on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dx9ExdjaREg .

He provides some details about the last minute demands that the US made including restricting Canada's ability to trade with other countries. He also refers to the US signature as being written in "pencil".

This link to the same video skips the first few minutes of staring at an empty podium before he walks in: https://youtu.be/Dx9ExdjaREg?t=217

My favourite part was the face he made when he was asked about Lutnick's last minute involvement potentially changing the negotiations.

The words were mostly diplomatic. The expression was not.
