"The Stare" is IMHO not the stare at a phone, but the response to a question.

Other people have mentioned this to me — that Gen Z and younger millennials are likely to fix you in a stare when answering a question.

Bit of a rant incoming:

This is a Gen X teaching failure. As kids we were taught to face front and look at the teacher when they were teaching, and in the era of fears of poorer attention, "attention-focussed" teachers have mistakenly extended this idea that looking the teacher in the eyes when answering is better, when it is worse.

The teacher thinks they have the pupil's attention: they do! But the pupil is supposed to be answering the question: that is where their attention should be.

Kids who do now have trouble directing their attention are not going to do better at answering the question this way, because they are wasting it. As long as the kid is making an attempt to answer the question, teachers should let them stare at the ceiling or a blank wall.

> half of it is spent staring at a screen

That's what I was referring to. Not the Gen Z stare.

Right, sry

Selling it in place neatly sidesteps suspicion about how secure the NY gold really is and if it's all really still there, too.

If this suspicion existed then you'd see a spread between (gold price in the US) and (gold price outside the US)

When Trump screwed with the tariffs we saw exactly that. Arbitrarily messing with tariffs is one of the risks that causes people to think keeping gold in the US is not entirely safe.

Not necessarily. If relations are good, people are willing to look the other way a lot.

Either way, you aren't left holding the bag, you're giving the bag to speculators.

At least we are owning the libs.

They should not have had traffic at all. The LLMs were supposed to be able to request downloads. Very simple traffic analysis could have shown that something strange was going on.

Heck, they could have had other LLMs watching the traffic if you want to be fancy about it.

The XP example doesn't quite fit IMHO.

Here it's their own programs doing the things, not some other organization or nation hacking their XP.

You can say with a straight face "Russian hackers should not have hacked our XP and they are bad people for doing so" but it's weird to look at your own program and say the same thing to it.

You launched it, at least keep an eye on what it's doing.

Clean coal, that's the future kids - America

They are fighting to create ideally a monopoly/oligopoly, then enshrine their position in law through regulatory capture, which seems fairly cheap nowadays, the feds are defanged and made into a MAGA extension.

Maybe we shouldn't take the paper clip optimizer at face value. Maybe the alien AI is not converting solar systems to paper clips (that would be visible, von Neuman probe style) but instead focus on the only really valuable metric - stock price go up!

You don't need to colonize anything for that to happen. The AIs can just sell tokens to each other.

Make America grift again

They also play another game, bribing the White House.
