> There are no incentives for anyone to contribute
If you like PHP, you might want to contribute. I like tmux, for instance, and I contributed code to them. I did the same for Sysdig, and a couple other projects.
I like a lot of things as well, yet I don't feel I can contribute after work. I already spend 8 to 10 hours at work. I can't find the motivation to do more.
I don't understand the question. Greed exists in every human system because it's a human quality, not a system quality. Real people are driven by many, sometimes conflicting things at the same time.
Non-greedy action is by definion an action that doesn't directly and materially benefit the one acting. That is universal across all political and I would argue all biological systems.
Why would you leave software? Sitting down and working in silence and thinking is still a very rare and valuable skill, the talking part is not so much.
If AI solves all coding and software then we are not going to sit around talking, it will be the time to sit down and do some very complex deep work that needs silence, concentration and understanding.
For you it will be paradise, you can also just point all the people to talk with your agent instead of you.
You can still code the interesting parts. We all need some mental gymnastic to keep up. Leetcode or writing the parts that interests you, it doesn't matter.
Yes I worked, almost for a decade. I know everybody loves talking there, but that was true before AI as well. Good thing is that with AI, big tech is going away. Who needs 5 layers of management when 5 guys can replicate their product.
Because it's a bullshit slop research. Under computer programmers there is "Develop Websites" at 0. Apparently AI cannot write web sites. Or just nobody looked at the slop they generated at Mercor.
Where does all of this end? If they keep this growth up, or even if they slow to a linear growth, they will produce more code than humanity combined pre-AI. That's scary.
Two things can be true at the same time. Google rotted our brain and AI will rot our brains even further. Google made remembering unnecessary. AI makes thinking unnecessary.
I see AI as allowing me to delegate details I'm aware of but don't care to think about to AI, while thinking about the larger picture and the details AI missed.
I'm still thinking, just about different things at different levels.
Same thing we argued about Google, that now we don't spend time learning stuff to remember, but we can just look it up and use that time to do more, spend it on more important problems than remembering. Yet it made us stupider.
Prior to Google, I kept a thesaurus and a dictionary on my desk so I could find new stuff and avoid having to remember everything. There was also a huge set of encyclopedias in the living room, along with a globe.
Did those tools make me stupid, too? (Can we do libraries next?)
What else is possible in our personal lives other than to eventually let the internet go? I'm almost certain that 90% of the content I read is AI slop. Software in general is horrible, advertisements and dark patterns are everywhere. Even offline, it ruined movies, series, books and games. Now I have to research an author before buying a book to make sure that they are real and they don't mass produce AI slop.
Sure, I will still use internet and AI professionally, because they are paying me to do it, but it will be just a tool.
I just read HN comments and that's all I do, and it works for me. Nobody cares about anything I make now because you used to have an innate marketing boost by the sheer fact that you put in the time to make something, but now everyone makes things so nobody cares.
Still, it works for me. I use the things I make and I just don't really share them any more, and that's enough for me. I don't feel like throwing the baby out with the bathwater and quitting "the Internet".
