I went on a date with a woman in Romania. During the date she commented that my phone wasn't an iPhone but that I had a fancy Sony mirrorless camera (as I was a tourist) so that made up for it.

Inefficient compared to a B-29 dropping a bomb over a city but not inefficient compared to whatever other means (if any) Germany had of attacking an east cost city like New York.

Rest assured that if this alternate history scenario had occurred historians would not be talking about the inefficiency of the attack, they would be talking about the most devastating attack that Germany was able to conduct against Americans on their own soil during the war. It would have completely changed the American mindset and culture forever.

This comment is full of misinformation.

The US hasn't withdrawn from CUSMA. On July 1st it declined to extend the agreement past 2036, which isn't the same thing. The deal stays in force until 2036 with annual reviews, and no withdrawal notice has been given.

It was also the US, not Canada, that declined to renew. Canada and Mexico both pushed for extension with the same administration that renegotiated NAFTA into CUSMA only a few years ago. So what changed exactly?

Also, the 6 year review is about whether to extend the term. Withdrawal is a separate clause that a nation can use at any time on six months' notice. As I understand it the treaty doesn't set up "if negotiations fail, then withdraw" mechanism but IANAL.

The 400% dairy figure is incredbily inflated. The steep tariffs, roughly 200-300% depending on the product, apply only above quota, and in quota imports come into the states without duty. The US also runs its own dairy quotas, and it's incredibly disingenuous to portray Canada as the overbearing protectionist entity in a scenario where Americans twice elected a leader running on an overtly and relatively unprecedented (in modern times anyways) protectionist policy.

> The Canadian government made the soup themselves.

On this we are in full agreement. The integration of the Canadian economy into the American one has placed Canada in a precarious place and only further decoupling from America and seeking trading partners abroad will change that.

These are good corrections; I was merely oversimplifying. The main point is that what Trump is doing is not some kind of horrible betrayal, he is simply using the terms of the treaty as written. The treaty explicitly specifies how and when either party can renegotiate, decline to renew, and withdraw. You could argue that the treaty ought to have been more permanent than that, but then your beef is not with Trump but with the Canadians who agreed to the treaty as written.

The worst part is that they probably didn't delete the data and are using it to train models.

Exactly. Think Google/YouTube pulls this type of stunt to fully seize user information and data, so that they can do whatever with it.

Giving users true recovery mechanisms, means possible removal of all or part of the collected data. Where sudden or out of the blue seizure and complete removal of the user's ability to access or recover, means it's now all their data.

I'm not a lawyer but from my laymen perspective I see a whole lot of negligence and racketeering. Also the bribery with the American current administration.

These things may not be illegal in America but they certainly are illegal some jurisdiction that OpenAI and others operate in.

I'd like to hear more about how you feel the HN flag feature relates to the comparisons the user you replied to raised to the Slashdot voting system and context in voting.

One of my biggest criticisms of social media in general is that the algorithm that determines how things are scored and ranked is intentionally obfuscated under the auspices of preventing 3rd parties from gaming it in such way that results in an outcome where it is impossible for users to determine if the platform owners are gaming it themselves.

I'm not aware of a social media site that does it but I think that I'd very strongly prefer a site where I could view a transparent log of who voted for what and when and what moderator took what action and when and why and how that all factors into how a comment / post / thread is ranked on the feed at any particular moment than one that hides all that stuff.

Reproducible builds but for social media.

Less 'pay no attention to that man behind the curtain' and more 'Exactly what it says on the tin"

The more that I interact with moderators on social media the more I've come to realize that as much as they're burnt out from answering the same questions from not-bad actors over and over as they are dealing with organic bad actors or automated content generators and that a great deal of those questions stem from the opaque nature of the algorithm.

All too often I find that moderators on social media are exasperated and burnt out not just from the endless janitorial work but also from users reaching out to them for understanding about the opaque nature of their actions and the outcomes that they have in the system.

So a lot of moderators gravitate towards a 'don't rock the boat' sort of mentality and over time adopt this sort of mentality: https://youtu.be/hNuu9CpdjIo?t=56

IMHO we're well past the point where any sort of security by obscurity with regards to the algorithm prevents any sort of automated influence on social media and the negative impacts of this kind of moderating technique only causes more damage than it prevents / mitigates.

X may be the platform you are looking for.

https://github.com/xai-org/x-algorithm

X is bad it always reverts to low effort content and then bombards you with constant racisms and sexism. There are Jems but you are constantly swimming in a river of garbage

You get more of what you engage with. If you respond to ragebait--even to express your disgust--the algorithm assumes you want more ragebait.

When I made a new X account a while back it immediately started showing me awful videos of people getting killed etc. This was without me engaging in anyway, just what came with a fresh account. So yes, maybe it gets worse if I engage, but the site seemed primed to be awful.

i would like this too but I dont see any way to maintain anonymity or pseudonymity and clamp down on spamming.

you can have neither or both but I dont see any way to have one without the other.

>The more that I interact with moderators on social media the more I've come to realize that as much as they're burnt out from answering the same questions from not-bad actors over and over

I'm mystified why this isnt a problem AI isnt applied to.

It is: /u/AutoModerator can be used for that.

The American intelligence community choose to jumpstart the Surveillance Industrial Revolution which is what has enabled companies like Google, Microsoft, and Facebook to dominate.

Europe didn't choose to do that.

Benjamin Franklin is said to have replied, "What use is a new-born baby?" in response to a skeptic of the utility of some of the first balloon launches.

I suspect that you won't be swayed by the abstract benefits of intelligent life on Earth finding not just proof of life on another body in our solar system but actual life that we could perhaps even launch retrieval missions to return to Earth for analysis so I won't talk about Darwin and his voyages and the theory of evolution that it resulted in as people often do in these conversations.

Instead I'll ask you what you think the dollar value of studying and reverse engineering an alternate or similar biochemical system survives in a world totally different than our own. What sort of applications could this have in materials science? What kind of new materials could we discover from alien life? What kind of novel bio-mimetic applications could we derive from this?

I look around the room I'm in and I see a hardwood floor, I see a differnet species tree making up woodpaneling on the walls. My clothes are made of cotton and rayon, there's some sort of grass woven lampshade above me. books made of paper, paintings with linseed oil paint -- what's the commercial and cultural value of all that stuff to our species?

My mother was an acquaintance of Warren Zevon's and she introduced me to him when I was a teenager in early August 2002, in a sort of casual "Hey Warren I'd like you to meet my son."

After the introduction I stood there and listened to the adults speak as a child often does in that kind of situation and he was lamenting that he hadn't been feeling well for awhile and he wasn't looking it either.

So my mother did what one does in that kind of situation which was insist that he go to the doctor and he kind of hummed and hawed at it because he didn't like doctors but finally said that he should do that.

That was a few weeks before he was diagnosed with cancer and about a year before he passed away. It's just one of those little experiences that kismet gifted me and I think of it often. More so now that I've gotten into his music over the past few years.

Like the author of this blog post I sometimes come across that final Letterman interview with Zevon and reflect on it and that powerful but simple line "Enjoy Every Sandwich" that Zevon offhandedly made.

It makes me reflect on how I want to continue to live a long and healthy life so that I can continue to have those kind of neat fleeting experiences of meeting people and just... witnessing life.

That reflection also made me realize that I should aspire to enable others to have those sorts of experiences so I have started to volunteer more at organizations which I feel can make that happen. It's rewarding and encouraging. It makes me feel like the world is a little bit less of a terrible place. If only for a moment.

Warren Zevon was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and The Killers performed at that event. This video of their rehearsal for the Warren Zevon song "Lawyers Guns and Money" is fabulous: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4q_K52TYsE&list=RDK4q_K52TY...
