Both are fascinating. I've had a pet theory for 30 years that there is not a single "mind" but that we're made up of more isolated aspects that do different things and working in concert we come up with our idea of "a mind".
Have you ever done any mindfulness meditation? I hit on a similar idea while meditating. My analogy is the brain is like the full spectrum of radio frequencies, but there's a "main station" that is "I". From time to time you lose that signal and tune into something else. And just because you're not listening to it, it doesn't mean the other stations aren't still broadcasting.
I have no idea if there's a biological origin for any of this, but it definitely fits with my experience of meditation and awareness training.
When you turn your thoughts inward you're depending more heavily on the Default Mode Network. I'm not well versed in it, but I believe conditions like anxiety and ADHD are partially caused by "too much" activity from this feature of the brain. With meditation you learn to adjust how much activity is occurring here by (not?) focusing on it.
I have over 3500 hours logged on Steam for NMS, and at 65 hours you have barely scratched the surface. Like many open world sandbox games, you have to make yourself goals. If you want a nice guided "start here" to "finish there" type game NMS is not for you.
NMS actually does ship "start here, finish here" content, but my main issue is that the game is terribly easy. All that extra content you're implying is there, I find to be very shallow, unchallenging, and unrewarding. In the end, I'm simply not interested in LARPing around on procedurally generated planets and going through the motions.
I noticed the figures seemed odd. The causes of female mortality are just plain wrong. The top two causes of female death post-puberty were domestic violence and childbirth related. Neither are listed in the "top mortality" table.
Graphs without labels and/or scales on the axes are useless. I know less after viewing that page than before, but I got to see some pretty lines that I guess must mean something.
The only graphs that don't have axes require a mouse to use. They show the values on hover—or if you tap the fullscreen button, that version also has axes. One graph is a 3-month time series showing a single day, so it looks like it doesn't have an X axis, but it does.
What this document suggests is a way to fast-track Chinese development of advanced silicon, as far as I can see. Does Anthropic really believe all the silicon is made in the USA? I thought Taiwan and Korea did most of the really heavy lifting.
The current US Government has added a whole new level of meaning to the slang, as a septic tank is typically full of shit.
