I don't dismiss or discount your perspective but based on my social circle: Your experience of fatherhood is not the median. The variance is pretty high too.

I agree. I'm a father of two, and my existence didn't suddenly get meaningful when I had children. I always found it meaningful, only in the sense that I get one life and want to experience as much as I can while I have it. That is a big part of why I chose to have children, it seemed like basically *the* fundamental life experience. But for me, I didn't experience this sudden big gain in meaning that a lot of online fathers seem to have.

I also wasn't prepared for a bit of a curve ball and I have experienced a loss of self that hasn't recovered or been compensated for yet.

I often wish I felt like a lot of other online fathers, but I take comfort in knowing there are a lot of others out there like me who struggle with parenthood. I hope I figure it all out in time!

Only one kid and I can't pretend it is all sunshine and rainbows, but there are real moments that make some of the other things irrelevant. It is possible that I went into fatherhood older and with eyes wide open so it was less of an adjustment, but it still surprised me in how things slowly re-aligned. Meaning was basically a side-effect of near exclusive focus on someone else ( for me ).

And that was my long way to say, the struggle is real and we are all figuring it out in real time. gl out there

> Many schools now have zero contact policies, and this has resulted in pupils harming other students in front of teachers, while teachers stood back for fear of losing their jobs, lawsuits, or even potential prosecution.

Teachers can still lose their jobs for failing to control (with zero contact) said child and prevent the assault.

The threat model of an insider is wildly different to an externally facing vulnerability. That doesn't mean there is no risk - but removing a class of attacker is an extremely useful outcome

> Sure, if you need help from the AI for something too difficult, time consuming or tedious, that makes sense

First, I offloaded the tedious. There was no real joy there. Then I offloaded the merely time consuming - after all I could have more fun on interesting problems.

But suddenly everything is too difficult, and I am not going to get any better at those pieces by glancing over ai prs. Still, this is what I do

Bat tunnel is real, it cost millions. The others riffs on the theme I expect

The "fish disco" for the Hinckley Point C nuclear power project is also real and cost millions.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fish_Disco

This page started with an amusing name, and just kept getting wilder. 182 million fish per year were expected to die without any protection -- an incredible number, almost 6 fish per second. So now I think "Yes! By all means add some ultrasonic speakers to keep them out!" And then I learn that these speakers will cost £50m... As a part of £700m in total fish protection measures! And that somehow Natural England finds that to be be insufficient!?

I feel like every fish on the Welsh coast could have its own personal concierge for that price.

What probably happened is that £699.993M got spent on corruption and then £7000 on fish protection measures. Capitalism isn't immune to Goodhart's law.

We should just tell the French they can send their fishing boats outside the plant. Two birds one stone :)

Seems like a good idea, since smacks of jellyfish have been known to shut down power plants.

Sam started wearing an earring lately - some wearable tech prototype. I'm told it is never wrong.

And it whispers in his ear like the slave behind the triumphant.

Remember YOU are only a man.

Plot of the movie upgrade (2018)

I toast, therefore I am.

> There are very few things I would want to do less than complicated logic in SQL.

Would you change your mind if I told you it would be giant strings with a bunch of `+ @database_name +` scattered around? Syntax highlighting is a crutch imo

(yes I refactored it to be parameterised yada, but for years those 2000 lines had grown and grown)

The risk, I imagine, is that they open up unintended avenues of gameplay as they generously interpret options

I think it still had a lot of fairly abhorrent experiences for female users, and suffered from the inability to screen messages at all.
